    Assessment of Climate Variability of the Greenland Ice Sheet: Integration of In Situ and Satellite Data

    The proposed research involves the application of multispectral satellite data in combination with ground truth measurements to monitor surface properties of the Greenland Ice Sheet which are essential for describing the energy and mass of the ice sheet. Several key components of the energy balance are parameterized using satellite data and in situ measurements. The analysis has been done for a 6 to 17 year time period in order to analyze the seasonal and interannual variations of the surface processes and the climatology. Our goal was to investigate to what accuracy and over what geographic areas large scale snow properties and radiative fluxes can be derived based upon a combination of available remote sensing and meteorological data sets. For the understanding of the surface processes a field program was designed to collect information on spectral albedo, specular reflectance, soot content, grain size and the physical properties of different snow types. Further, the radiative and turbulent fluxes at the ice/snow surface were monitored for the parameterization and interpretation of the satellite data.     Trivial, Critical and Near-critical Scaling Limits of Two-dimensional Percolation

    It is natural to expect that there are only three possible types of scaling limits for the collection of all percolation interfaces in the plane: (1) a trivial one, consisting of no curves at all, (2) a critical one, in which all points of the plane are surrounded by arbitrarily large loops and every deterministic point is almost surely surrounded by a countably infinite family of nested loops with radii going to zero, and (3) an intermediate one, in which every deterministic point of the plane is almost surely surrounded by a largest loop and by a countably infinite family of nested loops with radii going to zero. We show how one can prove this using elementary arguments, with the help of known scaling relations for percolation. The trivial limit corresponds to subcritical and supercritical percolation, as well as to the case when the density p approaches the critical probability, p_c, sufficiently slowly as the lattice spacing is sent to zero. The second type corresponds to critical percolation and to a faster approach of p to p_c. The third, or near-critical, type of limit corresponds to an intermediate speed of approach of p to p_c. The fact that in the near-critical case a deterministic point is a.s. surrounded by a largest loop demonstrates the persistence of a macroscopic correlation length in the scaling limit and the absence of scale invariance.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Effective Engagement While Scaling Up: Lessons from a Citizen Science Program Transitioning from Single- to Multi-Region Scale

    Engagement strategies are central to the success of community and citizen science (CCS) initiatives; however, relatively little has been written on approaches that support project growth. Here, we assess the four components of the Mountain Rain or Snow engagement strategy (recruitment, training, activation, and retention) as the project transitioned from one region to four to increase participation in documenting precipitation phase. To scale up, we replicated the structure from our single-region effort in new regions while using place-based text messaging with observers across broad geographic areas and a localized approach to building partnerships. We use two sources of data—a participant feedback survey of 443 respondents and participant analytics of 877 new sign-ups and 13,017 observations submitted during the study—to evaluate success relative to project goals established at the outset of the expansion process. The Mountain Rain or Snow engagement strategy met project-wide goals for growing our observer network, for data collection, and for maintaining observer satisfaction with communication tools. We did not meet region-level goals for recruitment and activation in one location. Diverse partnerships and approaches to amplification supported recruitment success for this project. Survey data show that 85% of respondents found our novel approach to training helpful, and 82% found activation text messages helpful to understand when and how to participate. Feedback on communication preferences show that there was unmet demand for text messaging. Our evaluation found that a consistent structure across regions coupled with place-based messaging enhanced engagement while scaling up

    Surface roughness over the northern half of the Greenland Ice Sheet from airborne laser altimetry

    This is the published version, also available here: http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2008JF001067.Surface roughness, defined as the standard deviation of small-scale elevation fluctuations from the linear trend over 0.5 km, can be estimated from high-resolution airborne laser altimetry. Here we present results for the northern half of the Greenland Ice Sheet using laser data collected in May 1995. Roughness is smallest in the central region straddling the ice divide, increases in amplitude toward the coast, and appears to be correlated with slope of the ice surface. For most of the study region surface roughness is 8 cm or less (<2.5 cm water equivalent). In smaller regions associated with fast flow, larger values are found. Comparison of the size of small-scale topographic disturbances with the spatial noise estimated from five closely spaced ice cores drilled in northwest Greenland shows good agreement. Similar correspondence was found earlier using nine ice cores from the Summit region. These results indicate that the airborne laser altimeter provides an efficient platform for characterizing the statistical nature of the snow surface over large areas of the polar ice sheets

    “Knowledge Is Power”: A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring Adult Audience Preferences for Engagement and Learning Formats Over 3 Years of a Health Science Festival

This study gathered mixed-methods data over 3 years (2011-2013) from on-site surveys (N = 661) of a health science festival, exploring audience preferences for dissemination or dialogue formats (lectures, discussions, community expo, lab experiments, and day out). Irrespective of time, age–group, or gender, lectures were significantly ranked the main attraction (76.8%), most highly attended (89.1%), and most useful format (83.8%). Thematic analysis revealed five themes exploring nonformal learning motivations for audiences, highlighting that knowledge/understanding acquisition is perceived as empowering greater health literacy

    FRA2A is a CGG repeat expansion associated with silencing of AFF3

    Folate-sensitive fragile sites (FSFS) are a rare cytogenetically visible subset of dynamic mutations. Of the eight molecularly characterized FSFS, four are associated with intellectual disability (ID). Cytogenetic expression results from CGG tri-nucleotide-repeat expansion mutation associated with local CpG hypermethylation and transcriptional silencing. The best studied is the FRAXA site in the FMR1 gene, where large expansions cause fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited ID syndrome. Here we studied three families with FRA2A expression at 2q11 associated with a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental phenotypes. We identified a polymorphic CGG repeat in a conserved, brain-active alternative promoter of the AFF3 gene, an autosomal homolog of the X-linked AFF2/FMR2 gene: Expansion of the AFF2 CGG repeat causes FRAXE ID. We found that FRA2A-expressing individuals have mosaic expansions of the AFF3 CGG repeat in the range of several hundred repeat units. Moreover, bisulfite sequencing and pyrosequencing both suggest AFF3 promoter hypermethylation. cSNP-analysis demonstrates monoallelic expression of the AFF3 gene in FRA2A carriers thus predicting that FRA2A expression results in functional haploinsufficiency for AFF3 at least in a subset of tissues. By whole-mount in situ hybridization the mouse AFF3 ortholog shows strong regional expression in the developing brain, somites and limb buds in 9.5-12.5dpc mouse embryos. Our data suggest that there may be an association between FRA2A and a delay in the acquisition of motor and language skills in the families studied here. However, additional cases are required to firmly establish a causal relationship

    Outlets of 2D invasion percolation and multiple-armed incipient infinite clusters

    We study invasion percolation in two dimensions, focusing on properties of the outlets of the invasion and their relation to critical percolation and to incipient infinite clusters (IIC's). First we compute the exact decay rate of the distribution of both the weight of the kth outlet and the volume of the kth pond. Next we prove bounds for all moments of the distribution of the number of outlets in an annulus. This result leads to almost sure bounds for the number of outlets in a box B(2^n) and for the decay rate of the weight of the kth outlet to p_c. We then prove existence of multiple-armed IIC measures for any number of arms and for any color sequence which is alternating or monochromatic.     A Proposed Classification of ICD-11 Severity Degrees of Personality Pathology Using the Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale

    Background: The 11th version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) has adopted a dimensional approach to personality disorder (PD) nosology. Notably, it includes an assessment of PD degree of severity, which can be classified according to five categories. To date, there is no gold standard measure for assessing degree of PD severity based on the ICD-11 model, and there are no empirically-based anchor points to delineate the proposed categories. With the operationalization of PD degrees of severity in the ICD-11 PD model now being closely aligned with Criterion A of the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), sharing a focus on self and interpersonal dysfunction, self-report instruments developed for the latter model might prove useful as screening tools to determine degrees of severity in the former.Methods: The Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale, a brief validated self-report questionnaire originally designed to assess level of personality pathology according to the AMPD framework, was used to derive anchor points to delineate the five severity degrees from the ICD-11 PD model. Data from five clinical and non-clinical samples (total N = 2,240) allowed identifying anchor points for classification, based on Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analysis, Latent Class Analysis, and data distribution statistics. Categories were validated using multiple indices pertaining to externalizing and internalizing symptoms relevant to PD.Results: Analyses yielded the following anchor points for PD degrees of severity: No PD = 0–1.04; Personality Difficulty = 1.05–1.29; Mild PD = 1.30–1.89; Moderate PD = 1.90–2.49; and Severe PD = 2.50 and above. A clear gradient of severity across the five categories was observed in all samples. A high number of significant contrasts among PD categories were also observed on external variables, consistent with the ICD-11 PD degree of severity operationalization.Conclusions: The present study provides potentially useful guidelines to determine severity of personality pathology based on the ICD-11 model. The use of a brief self-report questionnaire as a screening tool for assessing PD degrees of severity should be seen as a time-efficient support for clinical decision and treatment planning

    Attenuation of lung fibrosis in mice with a clinically relevant inhibitor of glutathione-S-transferase π

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a debilitating lung disease characterized by excessive collagen production and fibrogenesis. Apoptosis in lung epithelial cells is critical in IPF pathogenesis, as heightened loss of these cells promotes fibroblast activation and remodeling. Changes in glutathione redox status have been reported in IPF patients. S-glutathionylation, the conjugation of glutathione to reactive cysteines, is catalyzed in part by glutathione-S-transferase π (GSTP). To date, no published information exists linking GSTP and IPF to our knowledge. We hypothesized that GSTP mediates lung fibrogenesis in part through FAS S-glutathionylation, a critical event in epithelial cell apoptosis. Our results demonstrate that GSTP immunoreactivity is increased in the lungs of IPF patients, notably within type II epithelial cells. The FAS-GSTP interaction was also increased in IPF lungs. Bleomycin- and AdTGFβ-induced increases in collagen content, α-SMA, FAS S-glutathionylation, and total protein S-glutathionylation were strongly attenuated in Gstp(–/–) mice. Oropharyngeal administration of the GSTP inhibitor, TLK117, at a time when fibrosis was already apparent, attenuated bleomycin- and AdTGFβ-induced remodeling, α-SMA, caspase activation, FAS S-glutathionylation, and total protein S-glutathionylation. GSTP is an important driver of protein S-glutathionylation and lung fibrosis, and GSTP inhibition via the airways may be a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of IPF
