Force induced stretched state: Effects of temperature
A model of self avoiding walks with suitable constraint has been developed to
study the effect of temperature on a single stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the
constant force ensemble. Our exact calculations for small chains show that the
extension (reaction co-ordinate) may increase or decrease with the temperature
depending upon the applied force. The simple model developed here which
incorporates semi-microscopic details of base direction provide an explanation

Development of organic fertilizers from food market waste and urban gardening by composting in Ecuador
Currently, the management of urban waste streams in developing countries is not optimized yet, and in many cases these wastes are disposed untreated in open dumps. This fact causes serious environmental and health problems due to the presence of contaminants and pathogens. Frequently, the use of specific low-cost strategies reduces the total amount of wastes. These strategies are mainly associated to the identification, separate collection and composting of specific organic waste streams, such as vegetable and fruit refuses from food markets and urban gardening activities. Concretely, in the Chimborazo Region (Ecuador), more than 80% of municipal solid waste is dumped into environment due to the lack of an efficient waste management strategy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a demonstration project at field scale in this region to evaluate the feasibility of implanting the composting technology not only for the management of the organic waste fluxes from food market and gardening activities to be scaled-up in other developing regions, but also to obtain an end-product with a commercial value as organic fertilizer. Three co-composting mixtures were prepared using market wastes mixed with pruning of trees and ornamental palms as bulking agents. Two piles were created using different proportions of market waste and prunings of trees and ornamental palms: pile 1 (50:33:17) with a C/N ratio 25; pile 2: (60:30:10) with C/N ratio 24 and pile 3 (75:0:25) with C/N ratio 33), prepared with market waste and prunings of ornamental palm. Throughout the process, the temperature of the mixtures was monitored and organic matter evolution was determined using thermogravimetric and chemical techniques. Additionally, physico-chemical, chemical and agronomic parameters were determined to evaluate compost quality. The results obtained indicated that all the piles showed a suitable development of the composting process, with a significant organic matter decomposition, reached in a shorter period of time in pile 3. At the end of the process, all the composts showed absence of phytotoxicity and suitable agronomic properties for their use as organic fertilizers. This reflects the viability of the proposed alternative to be scaled-up in developing areas, not only to manage and recycle urban waste fluxes, but also to obtain organic fertilizers, including added value in economic terms related to nutrient contents.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Effects of Eye-phase in DNA unzipping
The onset of an "eye-phase" and its role during the DNA unzipping is studied
when a force is applied to the interior of the chain. The directionality of the
hydrogen bond introduced here shows oscillations in force-extension curve
similar to a "saw-tooth" kind of oscillations seen in the protein unfolding
experiments. The effects of intermediates (hairpins) and stacking energies on

A family of Nikishin systems with periodic recurrence coefficients
Suppose we have a Nikishin system of measures with the th generating
measure of the Nikishin system supported on an interval \Delta_k\subset\er
with for all . It is well known that
the corresponding staircase sequence of multiple orthogonal polynomials
satisfies a -term recurrence relation whose recurrence coefficients,
under appropriate assumptions on the generating measures, have periodic limits

.) Taking these periodic limit values as the coefficients of a new
-term recurrence relation, we construct a canonical sequence of monic
polynomials , the so-called \emph{Chebyshev-Nikishin
polynomials}. We show that the polynomials themselves form a sequence
of multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to some Nikishin system of
measures, with the th generating measure being absolutely continuous on
. In this way we generalize a result of the third author and Rocha
\cite{LopRoc} for the case . The proof uses the connection with block
Toeplitz matrices, and with a certain Riemann surface of genus zero. We also
obtain strong asymptotics and an exact Widom-type formula for the second kind

A charged particle in a magnetic field - Jarzynski Equality
We describe some solvable models which illustrate the Jarzynski theorem and
related fluctuation theorems. We consider a charged particle in the presence of
magnetic field in a two dimensional harmonic well. In the first case the centre
of the harmonic potential is translated with a uniform velocity, while in the
other case the particle is subjected to an ac force. We show that Jarzynski
identity complements Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem on the absence of diamagnetism in

Dynamic force spectroscopy of DNA hairpins. II. Irreversibility and dissipation
We investigate irreversibility and dissipation in single molecules that
cooperatively fold/unfold in a two state manner under the action of mechanical
force. We apply path thermodynamics to derive analytical expressions for the
average dissipated work and the average hopping number in two state systems. It
is shown how these quantities only depend on two parameters that characterize
the folding/unfolding kinetics of the molecule: the fragility and the
coexistence hopping rate. The latter has to be rescaled to take into account
the appropriate experimental setup. Finally we carry out pulling experiments
with optical tweezers in a specifically designed DNA hairpin that shows
two-state cooperative folding. We then use these experimental results to

Observational Signatures of Massive Black Hole Progenitor Pathways: is Leo I a Smoking Gun?
Observational evidence is mounting regarding the population demographics of
Massive Black Holes (MBHs), from the most massive cluster galaxies down to the
dwarf galaxy regime. However, the progenitor pathways from which these central
MBHs formed remain unclear. Here we report a potentially powerful observational
signature of MBH formation in dwarf galaxies. We argue that a continuum in the
mass spectrum of MBHs in (fossil) dwarf galaxies would be a unique signature of
a heavy seed formation pathway. Under the robust assumption of initial
fragmentation of the parent gas cloud resulting in a burst of heavy seed
production, a significant fraction of these seeds will survive to the present
day as off-nuclear MBHs with masses less than that of the central object.
Motivated by the recent discovery of a MBH in the relatively low central
density Leo I galaxy, we show that such a continuum in MBH seed masses should
persist from the lightest black hole masses up to the mass of the central MBH
in contrast to the light seeding scenario where no such continuum should exist.
The detection of off-centered MBHs and a central MBH would represent strong
