Pattern formation in Hamiltonian systems with continuous spectra; a normal-form single-wave model
Pattern formation in biological, chemical and physical problems has received
considerable attention, with much attention paid to dissipative systems. For
example, the Ginzburg--Landau equation is a normal form that describes pattern
formation due to the appearance of a single mode of instability in a wide
variety of dissipative problems. In a similar vein, a certain "single-wave
model" arises in many physical contexts that share common pattern forming
behavior. These systems have Hamiltonian structure, and the single-wave model
is a kind of Hamiltonian mean-field theory describing the patterns that form in
phase space. The single-wave model was originally derived in the context of
nonlinear plasma theory, where it describes the behavior near threshold and
subsequent nonlinear evolution of unstable plasma waves. However, the
single-wave model also arises in fluid mechanics, specifically shear-flow and
vortex dynamics, galactic dynamics, the XY and Potts models of condensed matter
physics, and other Hamiltonian theories characterized by mean field
interaction. We demonstrate, by a suitable asymptotic analysis, how the
single-wave model emerges from a large class of nonlinear advection-transport
theories. An essential ingredient for the reduction is that the Hamiltonian
system has a continuous spectrum in the linear stability problem, arising not
from an infinite spatial domain but from singular resonances along curves in
phase space whereat wavespeeds match material speeds (wave-particle resonances
in the plasma problem, or critical levels in fluid problems). The dynamics of
the continuous spectrum is manifest as the phenomenon of Landau damping when
the system is ... Such dynamical phenomena have been rediscovered in different
contexts, which is unsurprising in view of the normal-form character of the
single-wave model
Feeding Techniques To Increase Calf Growth In The First Two Months Of Life
End of project reportData from Cornell University and the University of Illinois in the USA suggested that average daily liveweight gains of 900 to 1000 g/calf/day could be achieved from birth to weaning provided the calf milk replacer (CMR) is formulated to meet the calf’s amino acid requirements for such a rate of gain. Their findings suggested a daily milk replacer DM allowance of 1250 to 1500 g/d with a crude protein content of 26 to 30%. A series of studies were undertaken, at ARINI with home born dairy calves and at Grange Beef Research Centre with purchased dairy calves, to determine the effect of increasing the daily milk replacer DM allowance and or increasing the crude protein content of the CMR on calf performance.The

There was no growth or intake response in any of the studies to increasing the crude
protein content of the CMP from 23% to 28%.
Calf growth rates responded to increasing the dailymilk replacer allowance from 600
to 1200 g/day for both home bred and purchased calves. However, the effect was not
significant post-weaning in any of the studies.
In all of the studies (for both home reared and purchased calves) feeding a high level
of CMRdecreased concentrate DM intake. However, the calves concentrate intakes
were similar post-weaning.
The home bred calves with free access to the milk replacer feeders failed to consume
their 1200 g/day allowance. Calves offered 600 or 1200 g of CMR/day had average
consumption of 554 and 944 g/d, respectively, in the milk feeding period.
Feeding a high (1200 g/d) compared to a low level (600 g/d) CMRdiet for the first 56
days had no significant effect on carcass weight or carcass characteristics when
purchased male calves were slaughtered off an ad libitum concentrate diet after 388
days. The final carcass weights were 231 and 240 kg for the respective 600 and 1200
g/d CMR.
Reducing the fat content of the CMRfrom 18% to 12% did not have any effect on
concentrate intake or liveweight gain

As a society we often view ageing as a ‘problem’ which must be ‘managed’ – how to cope with the pressure on national health services of growing numbers of older people, the cost of sustaining them with pensions and social care, and the effect on families and housing needs. But ageing is not a policy problem to be solved. Instead it is a normal part of life, which varies according to personal characteristics, experience and outlook, and for many people growing older can be a very positive experience. Drawing on the Mass Observation project, one of the longest-running longitudinal life-writing projects anywhere in the world, Coming of Age grounds public policy in people’s real, lived experiences of ageing. It finds that the experience of ageing is changing, so that most people who are now reaching retirement do not identify themselves as old. One-size-fits-all policy approaches that treat older people as if they are all alike are alienating and inappropriate. Instead, older people need inclusive policy approaches that enable them to live their lives on their own terms. To ensure that older people are actively engaged, policy makers should stop emphasising the costs posed by an ageing population and start building on the many positive contributions that older people already make to our society.The Research Support and Development Office

Aquatic Invertebrate Community Structure, Biological Condition, Habitat, and Water Quality at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri, 2005-2014
Ozark National Scenic Riverways (OZAR) was established to protect the corridor of the Current River and its major tributary, the Jacks Fork. The Current River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the U.S., with much of its base flow coming from several large springs. To assess the biological condition of these rivers, aquatic invertebrate community structure was monitored from 2005 to 2014. Benthic invertebrate samples and associated habitat and water quality data were collected from each of nine sampling sites using a Slack-Surber sampler. The Stream Condition Index (SCI), a multimetric index that incorporates taxa richness, EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) richness, Shannon’s diversity index, and Hilsenhoff Biotic Index (HBI), was calculated. The benthic invertebrate fauna was diverse with 155 distinct taxa identified from all sites. Mean taxa richness was high, ranging from 22 to 30 among sites. The invertebrate taxa of the Current River and Jacks Fork are largely intolerant across all taxa represented (mean tolerance value= ~4.25). Mean HBI did not exceed 3.9 in the Current River or 4.4 for the Jacks Fork. Mean SCI scores across sampling sites generally were well above 16, indicating they are not impaired. Habitat and water quality data were summarized, but they were poorly correlated with individual invertebrate metrics. Sørenson’s similarity index was used to assess community similarity among sites, and similarity scores were then analyzed using ascendant hierarchical cluster analysis. Similarity among sites was 72% or greater. Cluster analysis showed that Current River and Jacks Fork sites clustered separately and in a downstream progression. The uppermost collection site on the Current River was most unlike the other sites, which probably relates to the distinct physical features of that site compared to the others. Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) was used to evaluate the relationship of invertebrate metrics to habitat and water quality. The NMDS model was found to be a good fit (stress=0.04) and specific conductance, temperature, discharge, filamentous algae and aquatic vegetation were among the most important habitat variables in defining the relationship among sampling sites. The three lower Current River and Jacks Fork sites each were closely grouped in ordination space, but the three upper Current River sites were farther apart from each other. The influence of several large volume springs near those sites is suspected of producing such disparity through press type disturbances. Although the invertebrate communities and water quality in the Current River and Jacks Fork are largely sound and have high biological condition, ongoing and projected threats to these resources remain, and those threats largely originate outside park jurisdictional boundaries. Inherent variability of invertebrate community diversity across sites and years highlights the importance of using multi-metric assessments and multiyear monitoring to support management decisions

Effective transport barriers in nontwist systems
In fluids and plasmas with zonal flow reversed shear, a peculiar kind of transport barrier appears in the shearless region, one that is associated with a proper route of transition to chaos. These barriers have been identified in symplectic nontwist maps that model such zonal flows. We use the so-called standard nontwist map, a paradigmatic example of nontwist systems, to analyze the parameter dependence of the transport through a broken shearless barrier. On varying a proper control parameter, we identify the onset of structures with high stickiness that give rise to an effective barrier near the broken shearless curve. Moreover, we show how these stickiness structures, and the concomitant transport reduction in the shearless region, are determined by a homoclinic tangle of the remaining dominant twin island chains. We use the finite-time rotation number, a recently proposed diagnostic, to identify transport barriers that separate different regions of stickiness. Outcomes of a specialist weight management programme in the UK national health service: prospective study of 1838 patients
Objectives There is limited evidence on the effectiveness of weight management programmes provided within routine healthcare and inconsistent use of outcome measures. Our aim was to evaluate a large National Health Service (NHS) weight management service and report absolute and proportional weight losses over 12 months.<p></p>
Design Prospective observational study.<p></p>
Setting Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Service (GCWMS), which provides care for residents of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area (population 1.2 million).<p></p>
Participants All patients who began GCWMS between 1 October 2008 and 30 September 2009.<p></p>
Interventions Structured educational lifestyle programme employing cognitive behavioural therapy, 600 kcal deficit diet, physical activity advice, lower calorie diet and pharmacotherapy.<p></p>
Primary and secondary outcomes measures Baseline observation carried forward (BOCF), last observation carried forward (LOCF) and changes in programme completers reported using outcomes of absolute 5 kg and 5% weight losses and mean weight changes at a variety of time points.<p></p>
Results 6505 referrals were made to GCWMS, 5637 were eligible, 3460 opted in and 1916 (34%) attended a first session. 78 patients were excluded from our analysis on 1838 patients. 72.9% of patients were women, mean age of all patients at baseline was 49.1 years, 43.3% lived in highly socioeconomically deprived areas and mean weights and body mass indices at baseline were 118.1 kg and 43.3 kg/m2, respectively. 26% lost ≥5 kg by the end of phase 1, 30% by the end of phase 2 and 28% by the end of phase 3 (all LOCF). Weight loss was more successful among men, particularly those ≤29 years old.<p></p>
Conclusions Routine NHS weight management services may achieve moderate weight losses through a comprehensive evidence-based dietary, activity and behavioural approach including psychological care. Weight losses should be reported using a range of outcome measures so that the effectiveness of different services can be compared
Lifting of the Vlasov-Maxwell Bracket by Lie-transform Method
The Vlasov-Maxwell equations possess a Hamiltonian structure expressed in
terms of a Hamiltonian functional and a functional bracket. In the present
paper, the transformation ("lift") of the Vlasov-Maxwell bracket induced by the
dynamical reduction of single-particle dynamics is investigated when the
reduction is carried out by Lie-transform perturbation methods. The ultimate
goal of this work is to derive explicit Hamiltonian formulations for the
guiding-center and gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations that have important
applications in our understanding of turbulent magnetized plasmas. Here, it is
shown that the general form of the reduced Vlasov-Maxwell equations possesses a
Hamiltonian structure defined in terms of a reduced Hamiltonian functional and
