    One-Dimensional Directed Sandpile Models and the Area under a Brownian Curve

    We derive the steady state properties of a general directed ``sandpile'' model in one dimension. Using a central limit theorem for dependent random variables we find the precise conditions for the model to belong to the universality class of the Totally Asymmetric Oslo model, thereby identifying a large universality class of directed sandpiles. We map the avalanche size to the area under a Brownian curve with an absorbing boundary at the origin, motivating us to solve this Brownian curve problem. Thus, we are able to determine the moment generating function for the avalanche-size probability in this universality class, explicitly calculating amplitudes of the leading order terms.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Bell's theorem as a signature of nonlocality: a classical counterexample

    For a system composed of two particles Bell's theorem asserts that averages of physical quantities determined from local variables must conform to a family of inequalities. In this work we show that a classical model containing a local probabilistic interaction in the measurement process can lead to a violation of the Bell inequalities. We first introduce two-particle phase-space distributions in classical mechanics constructed to be the analogs of quantum mechanical angular momentum eigenstates. These distributions are then employed in four schemes characterized by different types of detectors measuring the angular momenta. When the model includes an interaction between the detector and the measured particle leading to ensemble dependencies, the relevant Bell inequalities are violated if total angular momentum is required to be conserved. The violation is explained by identifying assumptions made in the derivation of Bell's theorem that are not fulfilled by the model. These assumptions will be argued to be too restrictive to see in the violation of the Bell inequalities a faithful signature of nonlocality.Comment: Extended manuscript. Significant change

    A reference architecture for multi-level SLA management

    There is a global trend towards service-orientation, both for organizing business interactions but also in modern IT architectures. At the business-level, service industries are becoming the dominating sector in which solutions are flexibly composed out of networked services. At the IT level, the paradigms of Service-Oriented Architecture and Cloud Computing realize service-orientation for both software and infrastructure services. Again, flexible composition across different layers is a major advantage of this paradigm. Service Level Agreements (SLA) are a common approach for specifying the exact conditions under which services are to be delivered and, thus, are a prerequisite for supporting the flexible trading of services. However, typical SLAs are just specified at a single layer and do not allow service providers to manage their service stack accordingly. They have no insight on how SLAs at one layer translate to metrics or parameters at the various lower layers of the service stack. In this paper, we present a reference architecture for a multi-level SLA management framework. We discuss the fundamental concepts and detail the main architectural components and interfaces. Furthermore, we show how the framework can be flexibly used for different industrial scenarios

    Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach

    The article adopts a narrative inquiry approach to foreground informal learning and exposes a collection of stories from tutors about how they adapted comfortably to the digital age. We were concerned that despite substantial evidence that bringing about changes in pedagogic practices can be difficult, there is a gap in convincing approaches to help in this respect. In this context, this project takes a “bottom-up” approach and synthesises several life-stories into a single persuasive narrative to support the process of adapting to digital change. The project foregrounds the small, every-day motivating moments, cultural features and environmental factors in people's diverse lives which may have contributed to their positive dispositions towards change in relation to technology enhanced learning. We expect that such narrative approaches could serve to support colleagues in other institutions to warm up to ever-changing technological advances

    Heat Transport in a Strongly Overdoped Cuprate: Fermi Liquid and Pure d-wave BCS Superconductor

    The transport of heat and charge in the overdoped cuprate superconductor Tl_2Ba_2CuO_(6+delta) was measured down to low temperature. In the normal state, obtained by applying a magnetic field greater than the upper critical field, the Wiedemann-Franz law is verified to hold perfectly. In the superconducting state, a large residual linear term is observed in the thermal conductivity, in quantitative agreement with BCS theory for a d-wave superconductor. This is compelling evidence that the electrons in overdoped cuprates form a Fermi liquid, with no indication of spin-charge separation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published version, title changed, Phys.     Genome-wide associations for milk production and somatic cell score in Holstein-Friesian cattle in Ireland

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Contemporary dairy breeding goals have broadened to include, along with milk production traits, a number of non-production-related traits in an effort to improve the overall functionality of the dairy cow. Increased indirect selection for resistance to mastitis, one of the most important production-related diseases in the dairy sector, via selection for reduced somatic cell count has been part of these broadened goals. A number of genome-wide association studies have identified genetic variants associated with milk production traits and mastitis resistance, however the majority of these studies have been based on animals which were predominantly kept in confinement and fed a concentrate-based diet (i.e. high-input production systems). This genome-wide association study aims to detect associations using genotypic and phenotypic data from Irish Holstein-Friesian cattle fed predominantly grazed grass in a pasture-based production system (low-input).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant associations were detected for milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, fat percentage, protein percentage and somatic cell score using separate single-locus, frequentist and multi-locus, Bayesian approaches. These associations were detected using two separate populations of Holstein-Friesian sires and cows. In total, 1,529 and 37 associations were detected in the sires using a single SNP regression and a Bayesian method, respectively. There were 103 associations in common between the sires and cows across all the traits. As well as detecting associations within known QTL regions, a number of novel associations were detected; the most notable of these was a region of chromosome 13 associated with milk yield in the population of Holstein-Friesian sires.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A total of 276 of novel SNPs were detected in the sires using a single SNP regression approach. Although obvious candidate genes may not be initially forthcoming, this study provides a preliminary framework upon which to identify the causal mechanisms underlying the various milk production traits and somatic cell score. Consequently this will deepen our understanding of how these traits are expressed.</p

    Appropriate timing of the 14 C-urea breath test to establish eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection

    The aim of this study was to determine the performance characteristics of the 14 C-urea breath test (UBT) performed 2 wk after the completion of therapy for Helicobacter pylori using a 4 to 6 wk study as the gold standard. METHODS : Patients with active Helicobacter pylori infection at four medical centers received proton pump inhibitor-based triple or quadruple therapy for 10–14 days. Patients underwent the 14 C-UBT 2 and 4–6 wk after the completion of therapy. A positive test was defined as 14 CO 2 excretion of >200 dpm, a negative test as 50 but <200 dpm. Performance characteristics of the 2-wk UBT were calculated using the 4 to 6-wk result as a gold standard. RESULTS : Eighty-five patients were enrolled and 82 patients (mean ± SD age, 62 ± 15 yr; 15 women) completed the protocol. Four patients had equivocal UBT results and were excluded from the analysis. Of the 78 patients, 68 (87%) had a negative 4 to 6-wk UBT. The 2-week UBT yielded a sensitivity of 90% (95% confidence interval 72–100%), specificity of 99% (97–100%), and accuracy of 97% (93–100%). In patients with a persistently positive UBT, 14 CO 2 excretion at 2 wk was significantly lower than at 4–6 wk after therapy ( p = 0.03 ). CONCLUSIONS : A UBT performed 2 wk after therapy yielded results comparable to 4 to 6 wk testing.
