The environments of intermediate-redshift QSOs: 0.3 < z < 0.7
An angular correlation of low significance (2 sigma) is observed between 0.3
< z < 0.5 QSOs and V < 23 galaxies. Overall, the cross-correlation function
between 82 intermediate-redshift (0.3 < z < 0.7), X-ray selected QSOs and V <
24 galaxies is investigated, but no signal is detected for the z > 0.5 QSOs.
After converting to an excess of galaxies physically associated with the QSO,
this lack of strong correlation is shown to be consistent with the clustering
of normal galaxies at the same moderate redshifts. Combined with previous
observations, these results imply that the environments of radio-quiet QSOs do
not undergo significant evolution with respect to the galaxy population over a
wide range of redshifts (0 < z < 1.5). This is in marked contrast to the rapid
increase in the richness of the environments associated with radio-loud QSOs

Modelling the relationship between planning, control, perception and execution behaviours in interactive worksystems
This paper presents a model of planning carried out by interactive worksystems which attempts: 1. To describe the relationship between planning, control, perception and execution behaviours; 2. To make explicit how these may be distributed across the user and physically separate devices. Such a model, it is argued, is more suitable to support HCI design practice than theories of planning in cognitive science which focus on problem-solving methods and representations. To demonstrate the application of the model to work situations, it is illustrated by examples drawn from an observational study of secretarial office administration

Living Originalism
Originalists routinely argue that originalism is the only coherent and legitimate theory of constitutional interpretation. This Article endeavors to undermine those claims by demonstrating that, despite the suggestion of originalist rhetoric, originalism is not a single, coherent, unified theory of constitutional interpretation, but is rather a disparate collection of distinct constitutional theories that share little more than a misleading reliance on a common label. Originalists generally agree only on certain very broad precepts that serve as the fundamental underlying principles of constitutional interpretation: specifically, that the writtenness of the Constitution necessitates a fixed constitutional meaning, and that courts that see themselves as empowered to give the Constitution some avowedly different meaning are behaving contrary to law. Originalists have been able to achieve agreement on these broad underlying principles, but they have often viewed as unduly narrow and mistaken the understanding held by the original originalists-the framers of originalism, if you will-as to how those principles must be put into action. And originalists disagree so profoundly amongst themselves about how to effectuate those underlying principles that over time they have articulated-and continue to articulate-a wide array of strikingly disparate, and mutually exclusive, constitutional theories. In this regard, originalists have followed a living, evolving approach to constitutional interpretation. Our account of originalism\u27s evolution-and of the extensive disagreement among originalists today-undermines originalists\u27 normative claims about the superiority of their approach. Originalists\u27 claims about the unique and exclusive legitimacy of their theory-that originalism self-evidently represents the correct method of constitutional interpretation-founder when one considers that originalists themselves cannot even begin to agree on what their correct approach actually entails. And their claims that originalism has a unique ability to produce determinate and fixed constitutional meaning, and thus that only originalism properly treats the Constitution as law and properly constrains judges from reading their own values into the Constitution, stumble when one considers the rapid evolution and dizzying array of versions of originalism; because each version has the potential to produce a different constitutional meaning, the constitutional meaning that a committed originalist judge would find turns out to be anything but fixed. As originalism evolves, the constitutional meanings that it produces evolve along with it. Today\u27s originalists not only reach results markedly different from those originalists reached thirty years ago, but also produce widely divergent results amongst themselves. Judges committed to the originalist enterprise thus have significant discretion to choose (consciously or subconsciously) the version of originalism that is most likely to dictate results consistent with their own preferences. As such, originalism suffers from the very flaws that its proponents have identified in its alternatives
Identification of mouse gaits using a novel force-sensing exercise wheel
The gaits that animals use can provide information on neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the biomechanics of locomotion. Mice are a common research model in many fields; however, there is no consensus in the literature on how (and if) mouse gaits vary with speed. One of the challenges in studying mouse gaits is that mice tend to run intermittently on treadmills or overground; this paper attempts to overcome this issue with a novel exercise wheel that measures vertical ground reaction forces. Unlike previous instrumented wheels, this wheel is able to measure forces continuously and can therefore record data from consecutive strides. By concatenating the maximum limb force at each time point, a force trace can be constructed to quantify and identify gaits. The wheel was three dimensionally printed, allowing the design to be shared with other researchers. The kinematic parameters measured by the wheel were evaluated using high-speed video. Gaits were classified using a metric called “3S” (stride signal symmetry), which quantifies the half wave symmetry of the force trace peaks. Although mice are capable of using both symmetric and asymmetric gaits throughout their speed range, the continuum of gaits can be divided into regions based on the frequency of symmetric and asymmetric gaits; these divisions are further supported by the fact that mice run less frequently at speeds near the boundaries between regions. The boundary speeds correspond to gait transition speeds predicted by the hypothesis that mice move in a dynamically similar fashion to other legged animals
Flight experience with altitude hold and Mach hold autopilots on the YF-12 aircraft at Mach 3
The altitude hold mode of the YF-12A airplane was modified to include a high-pass-filtered pitch rate feedback along with optimized inner loop altitude rate proportional and integral gains. An autothrottle control system was also developed to control either Mach number or KEAS at the high-speed flight conditions. Flight tests indicate that, with the modified system, significant improvements are obtained in both altitude and speed control, and the combination of altitude and autothrottle hold modes provides the most stable aircraft platform thus far demonstrated at Mach 3 conditions
Satellite personal communications system
Voice channel communication between low power mobile stations dispersed over a large area is provided by a system which includes a geostationary satellite utilizing a large UHF antenna that can receive a transmission from a caller and retransmit it over any one beam of a matrix of narrow beams, so the chosen beam covers an area in which a designated called party is located. A single up-link control channel occupying a narrow frequency band, can be utilized to receive dial up signals from a caller, and another single down link control channel can be utilized to ring up the called party located anywhere within the continental United States. The satellite antenna includes a matrix of feed horns that not only direct the beams in a controlled matrix onto the area of the continental United States, but also permit detection of the region from which the caller's signal is transmitted and the region from which the called party's answer is received, to enable the interconnection of signals received from these two regions. The system is particularly useful for rural areas
Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium In Nearby Tidal Streams (SAINTS): Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy and Imaging of Intergalactic Star-forming Objects
A spectroscopic analysis of 10 intergalactic star forming objects (ISFOs) and
a photometric analysis of 67 ISFOs in a sample of 14 interacting systems is
presented. The majority of the ISFOs have relative polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbon (PAH) band strengths similar to those of nearby spiral and
starburst galaxies. In contrast to what is observed in blue compact dwarfs
(BCDs) and local giant HII regions in the Milky Way (NGC 3603) and the
Magellanic Clouds (30 Doradus and N 66), the relative PAH band strengths in
ISFOs correspond to models with a significant PAH ion fraction (<50%) and
bright emission from large PAHs (~100 carbon atoms). The [NeIII]/[NeII] and
[SIV]/[SIII] line flux ratios indicate moderate levels of excitation with an
interstellar radiation field that is harder than the majority of the Spitzer
Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey and starburst galaxies, but softer than BCDs
and local giant HII regions. The ISFO neon line flux ratios are consistent with
a burst of star formation < 6 million years ago. Most of the ISFOs have
~million solar masses of warm molecular hydrogen with a likely origin in
photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). Infrared Array Camera photometry shows the
ISFOs to be bright at 8 um, with one third having [4.5] - [8.0] > 3.7, i.e.,
enhanced non-stellar emission, most likely due to PAHs, relative to normal
spirals, dwarf irregulars and BCD galaxies. The relative strength of the 8 um
emission compared to that at 3.6 um or 24 um separates ISFOs from dwarf
galaxies in Spitzer two color diagrams. The infrared power in two thirds of the
ISFOs is dominated by emission from grains in a diffuse interstellar medium.
One in six ISFOs have significant emission from PDRs, contributing ~30 % - 60 %
