Gedagtes oor die opleiding van die Wiskunde-onderwyser

    Get PDF

Left Dislocation and its translation in some Germanic languages

In terms of the theoretical framework of an influential recent model of Bible translation, Left Dislocation (=LD) can be regarded as a “communicate clue” that translators must try to interpretively resemble in their target text translation. This exploratory study investigates how twenty translations (fifteen English, three Afrikaans, one German, and one Dutch) have interpretively resembled (or not) nine prototypical constructions, and one less prototypical one, from the book of Genesis. It has been found that, firstly, translations on the formal equivalent pole tend to interpretively resemble LD constructions. If the LD tends to be very prototypical, this tendency is displayed even by some translations towards the functional equivalent pole. Secondly, even in the case of prototypical instances, translations on the functional equivalent pole, however, tend not to interpretively resemble the construction. In these cases, it could be argued that they are not serving the very goal that they as a rule want to accomplish—that is, to provide readers with a translation that is easy to read and process. Thirdly, the structure of English, Afrikaans and Dutch—in contrast to German—often appears to require a construal that does not formally reflect the pronominal resumption of the LD constituent in the matrix clause. Fronting the LD constituent is often used, and sometimes a pause after the fronted (i.e. then dislocated) constituent is signaled by means of a comma or a dash. These findings concur with those of some of the other papers in this volume. Resumption, for example, is not always the primary distinctive feature of a LD construction; a tonal pause between the LD and its matrix clause may also suffice. There are also historical explanations as to why some of the functions of fronting and LD constructions overlap. Keywords: Left Dislocation, Information Structure, Translation Theory, Bible Translation, Biblical Hebre

Remedy and accountability a decade after the Marikana massacre

August 16th, 2022 marked the 10th anniversary of the Marikana Massacre in Rustenburg, South Africa. This was the worst incident of mass killing by police since the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960 in the heyday of the Apartheid regime. In the first days of August 2012, workers at Lonmin plc, a platinum group metals mining company, went on a wildcat strike demanding a minimum salary of 12500 Rand, circa 800 USD, per month and protesting against the poor living conditions they and their families where subjected to in the Marikana vicinity, an area 100 km north of Johannesburg where the mine is located. As days passed, tension escalated leading to the killing of ten people, including three non-striking workers, two security guards, three striking workers, and two police officers. Various attempts to facilitate negotiations with striking workers were turned down by Lonmin management. Instead, Lonmin managers actively engaged in communications with senior political leaders, police officers, and state mining officials to frame the situation as one that required strong and decisive police intervention

Failure to discharge : a discussion of the insufficient legal recourse afforded to judgment debtors in the South African context

AGORA International Journal of Juridical Sciences is listed as an open access journal at SHERPA RoMEO http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo and DOAJ http://doaj.org.University Legal Aid Clinics are often confronted with aspects of the law which are quite alien to those faced by our colleagues in private practice. One such area is that of assisting judgment debtors who have fallen afoul of disreputable and often immoral money lenders and other judgment creditors. These creditors unilaterally charge exuberant and unlawful fees for interest and ‘legal’ costs, which amounts are simply added to the judgments ex post facto. The issue of discharge then becomes hugely problematic as the courts do not mero motu step in to cancel emoluments attachment orders and other tools of collection employed by these creditors. It is argued that the South African legal system, including legislation in this regard, lends insufficient protection and recourse to indigent legal aid clients faced with this situation.Post-prin

Direkte vertaling van die Bybel as antieke teks : net ’n nuwe benaming vir ’n stokkerige woordelikse vertaling

LitNet Akademies, 11(3):290-315.The original publication is available at http://www.litnet.co.za/category/litnet-akademies-godsdienswetenskappe/Die term direkte vertaling kan maklik vereenselwig word met ’n stokkerige letterlike of woordelikse vertaling. LitNet AkademiesPublisher's versio

Progressive familial heart block type I : clinical and pathological observations

CITATION: 1991: .Van der Merwe, P.-L. et al. 1991. Progressive familial heart block type I : clinical and pathological observations. South African Medical Journal, 80:34-38.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaProgressive familial heart block type I (PFHB-I) is an autosomal inherited disease. It was previously postulated that the disease is limited to the cardiac conduction tissue. The presentation of a patient with dilated cardiomyopathy focused on the possibility that this might be part of PFHB-I. This observation led to routine echocardiographic examination of patients with complete heart block, who belonged to PFHB-I families, and another 5 cases with signs of dilated cardiomyopathy were identified. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that the histological picture of PFHB-I has been described. From these case reports it is clear that in the presence of a dilated cardiomyopathy the prognosis in PFHB-I tends to be poor.Publisher’s versio

The contribution of Wolfgang Richter to current developments in the study of Biblical Hebrew

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to create a greater understanding of Richter's work without losing sight of its limitations. It commences with a brief description of the background against which Richter's initiatives must be understood. Secondly, the theoretical frame of reference and the basic features of both the morphological, and the morphosyntactic databases he developed are discussed. Some of the prospects these linguistically highly differentiated tools have in store for a better description of Biblical Hebrew are illustrated by means of examples. Thirdly, the theoretical foundations and the structure of the sentence syntactic database which he is compiling are outlined. In conclusion it is pointed out that one may argue that one of Richter's major weaknesses from a theoretical linguistic point of view is his eclectic use of mainly structuralist-oriented principles. However, it will also be illustrated that the practical application of many of these principles does not necessarily jeopardize the usefulness of Richter's databases

Treatment of severe alcoholic hepatitis: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Severe alcoholic hepatitis is the most severe form of alcohol-related liver disease. Corticosteroids remain the first choice of treatment. However, they are only effective in a subset of patients and are associated with an increased infection risk. Furthermore, nonresponders to corticosteroids have a poor prognosis with a mortality of 70% over 6 months. As such, there is a high need for a more personalized use of corticosteroids and the development and identification of alternative therapeutic strategies. In this review, we summarize the recent and ongoing randomized controlled trials concerning the treatment of severe alcoholic hepatitis

A simulation study to compare reference and other priors in the case of a standard univariate Student t-distribution

    Get PDF
In this paper, reference and probability-matching priors are derived for the univariate Student t-distribution. These priors generally lead to procedures with properties frequentists can relate to while still retaining Bayes validity. The priors are tested by performing simulation studies. The focus is on the relative mean squared error from the posterior median and on the frequentist coverage of the 95% credibility intervals for a sample of size n = 30. Average interval lengths of the credibility intervals as well as the modes of the interval lengths based on 2 000 simulations are also considered. The performance of the priors is also tested on real data, namely daily logarithmic returns of IBM stocks
