This invention is a semi-interpenetrating polymer network which includes a high performance thermosetting polyimide having a nadic end group acting as a crosslinking site and a high performance linear thermoplastic polyimide. An improved high temperature matrix resin is provided which is capable of performing in the 200 to 300 C range. This resin has significantly improved toughness and microcracking resistance, excellent processability, mechanical performance and moisture and solvent resistances

Basic hydrogeologic and remote sensing data for selection of sanitary landfill sites

Solid waste disposal were studied in Volusia County to protect the water supply in the area. Highlands in this County are of limited areal extent and, most significantly, the sand hills and ridges are in areas where recharge of the Floridan aquifer occurs. This study proves that well drained soils meeting the current State requirements are of limited areal extent. These areas should not be utilized as sanitary landfill sites! Rather, it is recommended that the Tomoka Farm Road site into the adjacent wetlands be extended. The County site on Rima Ridge recommended by Greenleaf-Telesca as the primary waste burial site in the County should be re-evaluated because of potential danger to the Daytona Beach water supply

Hydraulics and geology related to beach restoration in Lee County, Florida

The erosion problem on Captiva Island is discussed. It is due to a deficit in the sand budget of the littoral drift system; a system with losses due to attrition of the particles and mass losses into the lagoons, to offshore, and to lateral transport. The effect that reopening Blind Pass would have, and the placement of sediment retaining structures in the surf zone at the northern and southern limits of the Captiva beach system, wave examined. A geological approach was used to study the origin and dynamic changes that have occurred. Through hydraulic modeling, changes that will occur by reopening and stabilizing Blind Pass are predicted. It is concluded that if the island is to be stabilized, beach nourishment with proper amounts and particle size is a necessity and that jetties adequate to restrict lateral and offshore losses are essential. It is shown that the reopening of Blind Pass would have minimal effects on the passes to the north and south, and would improve the environmental conditions in the sound with no adverse effects on the beach system

Ambivalent sexism and perceptions of men and women who violate gendered family roles

This study draws on ambivalent sexism theory to explore the role of benevolent and hostile gender attitudes in determining perceptions of individuals who comply with traditional gender roles or violate them. Three hundred and eleven participants were presented with a description of a male or a female target who was either a primary breadwinner or a primary caregiver. As hypothesized, hostile sexism predicted more negative perceptions of a female breadwinner, whereas benevolent sexism predicted more positive perceptions of a female caregiver. Moreover, participants who endorsed hostile attitudes toward men reacted more positively to a nontraditional male caregiver, whereas those who endorsed benevolent attitudes toward men reacted more negatively to a male caregiver. Implications regarding the nature of ambivalent gender attitudes are discussed

Effects of biasing on the galaxy power spectrum at large scales

n this paper we study the effect of biasing on the power spectrum at large scales. We show that even though non-linear biasing does introduce a white noise contribution on large scales, the $P(k)\propto k^n$ behavior of the matter power spectrum on large scales may still be visible and above the white noise for about one decade. We show, that the Kaiser biasing scheme which leads to linear bias of the correlation function on {\em large} scales, also generates a linear bias of the {\rm power spectrum} on rather small scales. This is a consequence of the divergence on small scales of the pure Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum. However, biasing becomes k-dependent when we damp the underlying power spectrum on small scales. Chemical vapor deposition growth

A chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor system with a vertical deposition chamber was used for the growth of Si films on glass, glass-ceramic, and polycrystalline ceramic substrates. Silicon vapor was produced by pyrolysis of SiH4 in a H2 or He carrier gas. Preliminary deposition experiments with two of the available glasses were not encouraging. Moderately encouraging results, however, were obtained with fired polycrystalline alumina substrates, which were used for Si deposition at temperatures above 1,000 C. The surfaces of both the substrates and the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, reflection electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy optical microscopy, and surface profilometric techniques. Several experiments were conducted to establish baseline performance data for the reactor system, including temperature distributions on the sample pedestal, effects of carrier gas flow rate on temperature and film thickness, and Si film growth rate as a function of temperature

Two New Species Belonging to the Dentipes- and Conifera-Subgroups of Triconia (Copepoda: Cyclopoida: Oncaeidae) from the East China Sea

Two new species of Triconia in Oncaeidae, including both sexes of Triconia constricta n. sp. and females of Triconia pararedacta n. sp., are described from south of Jeju Island in the East China Sea. Triconia constricta belongs to the dentipes-subgroup of Triconia characterized by the absence of integumental pockets on the anterior surface of the labrum. It is distinguished from the closely related species of this subgroup, T dentipes (Giesbrecht, 1891), T elongata Bottger-Schnack, 1999, and T giesbrechti Bottger-Schnack, 1999, by the following combination of morphological features in females: 1) lateral margins of genital double-somite in dorsal view slightly constricted at midlength; 2) P5 with very long outer basal seta, reaching beyond paired secretory pores on posterior part of genital doublesomite, as well as distinctive length ratios of exopodal setae; in both sexes; 3) length ratios of caudal setae, and 4) relative spine lengths on distal endopodal segments of swimming legs 2 to 4. Triconia pararedacta is a member of the conifera-subgroup characterized by a dorsal projection on the second pedigerous somite in the female. It differs from females of other species of this subgroup in the following: 1) very small-sized dorsal projection on second pedigerous somite, 2) different length to width ratio of P5 exopod, 3) relative lengths of outer basal seta and exopodal setae of P5, and 4) different length ratio of outer distal spine to distal spine on endopods of P2-P4. Additional character states are proposed for defining the dentipes-subgroup within Triconia and for recognizing three sets of species within the conifera-subgroup

Knowledge, Attitudes Toward Corporations, and Belief in a Just World as Correlates of Tort Reform Attitudes

Recent legislation in tort law has resulted in such changes as states capping punitive and non-economic damages as well as abolishing the collateral source rule and joint and several liability. The purpose of the present research is to examine attitudes toward changes in tort law. We asked American adults about their attitudes toward the civil justice system and its players, experiences in the civil justice system, and belief in a just world. We found that a more negative attitude toward litigation and juries, higher belief in a just world, and a more positive attitude toward corporations and doctors predicted a more positive view of recent changes in tort legislation
