    High pressure Hugoniot measurements using Mach waves

    Traditionally, most dynamic shock compression experiments are conducted using a plane one-dimensional wave of uniaxial strain. In this case, the evaluation of the equation of state is simplified due to the geometry, but the amplitude of the induced shock wave is limited by the magnitude of the input load. In an effort to dramatically increase the range of pressures that can be accessed by traditional loading methods, a composite target assembly is examined. The target consists of two concentric cylinders aligned with the axial direction parallel to the loading. The target is designed such that on initial loading, the outer cylinder will have a higher shock velocity than the inner material of interest. Conically converging shocks will be generated at the interface between the two materials due to the impedance mismatch. Upon convergence, an irregular reflection occurs and the conical analog of a Mach reflection develops. The Mach reflection will grow until it reaches a steady state, at which point the wave configuration becomes self similar. The resulting high pressure Hugoniot state can then be measured using velocity interferometry and impedance matching. The technique is demonstrated using a planar mechanical impact generated by a powder gun to study the shock response of copper. Two systems are examined which utilize either a low impedance (6061-T6 aluminum) or a high impedance (molybdenum) outer cylinder. A multipoint VISAR experiment will be presented to validate the technique, and will be compared to numerical simulations. The feasibility of measuring an entire Hugoniot curve using full field velocity interferometry (ORVIS) will also be discussed

    Fundamental frequency height as a resource for the management of overlap in talk-in-interaction.

    Overlapping talk is common in talk-in-interaction. Much of the previous research on this topic agrees that speaker overlaps can be either turn competitive or noncompetitive. An investigation of the differences in prosodic design between these two classes of overlaps can offer insight into how speakers use and orient to prosody as a resource for turn competition. In this paper, we investigate the role of fundamental frequency (F0) as a resource for turn competition in overlapping speech. Our methodological approach combines detailed conversation analysis of overlap instances with acoustic measurements of F0 in the overlapping sequence and in its local context. The analyses are based on a collection of overlap instances drawn from the ICSI Meeting corpus. We found that overlappers mark an overlapping incoming as competitive by raising F0 above their norm for turn beginnings, and retaining this higher F0 until the point of overlap resolution. Overlappees may respond to these competitive incomings by returning competition, in which case they raise their F0 too. Our results thus provide instrumental support for earlier claims made on impressionistic evidence, namely that participants in talk-in-interaction systematically manipulate F0 height when competing for the turn

    The great outdoors: how a green exercise environment can benefit all

    The studies of human and environment interactions usually consider the extremes of environment on individuals or how humans affect the environment. It is well known that physical activity improves both physiological and psychological well-being, but further evidence is required to ascertain how different environments influence and shape health. This review considers the declining levels of physical activity, particularly in the Western world, and how the environment may help motivate and facilitate physical activity. It also addresses the additional physiological and mental health benefits that appear to occur when exercise is performed in an outdoor environment. However, people's connectedness to nature appears to be changing and this has important implications as to how humans are now interacting with nature. Barriers exist, and it is important that these are considered when discussing how to make exercise in the outdoors accessible and beneficial for all. The synergistic combination of exercise and exposure to nature and thus the 'great outdoors' could be used as a powerful tool to help fight the growing incidence of both physical inactivity and non-communicable disease. © 2013 Gladwell et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    The 26^{26}Al Gamma-ray Line from Massive-Star Regions

    The measurement of gamma rays from the diffuse afterglow of radioactivity originating in massive-star nucleosynthesis is considered a laboratory for testing models, when specific stellar groups are investigated, at known distance and with well-constrained stellar population. Regions which have been exploited for such studies include Cygnus, Carina, Orion, and Scorpius-Centaurus. The Orion region hosts the Orion OB1 association and its subgroups at about 450~pc distance.     Connected Hopf algebras and iterated Ore extensions

    We investigate when a skew polynomial extension T = R[x; {\sigma}, {\delta}] of a Hopf algebra R admits a Hopf algebra structure, substantially generalising a theorem of Panov. When this construction is applied iteratively in characteristic 0 one obtains a large family of connected noetherian Hopf algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, including for example all enveloping algebras of finite dimensional solvable Lie algebras and all coordinate rings of unipotent groups.
