    Pulsed laser deposition growth of Fe3O4 on III–V semiconductors for spin injection

    We report on the growth of thin layers of Fe3O4 on GaAs and InAs by pulsed laser deposition. It is found that Fe3O4 grows epitaxially on InAs at a temperature of 350 °C. X-ray photoelecton spectroscopy (XPS) studies of the interface show little if any interface reaction resulting in a clean epitaxial interface. In contrast, Fe3O4 grows in columnar fashion on GaAs, oriented with respect to the growth direction but with random orientation in the plane of the substrate. In this case XPS analysis showed much more evidence of interface reactions, which may contribute to the random-in-plane growth

    The Effect of Wearing an Obese Body Suit on Snack Food Consumption and Alcohol Consumption

    A previous study showed that wearing an obese body suit results in increased snack food consumption. The aim of this study was to explore mechanisms that may explain the effect that wearing an obese body suit has on snack food consumption. We examined two potential explanations; that the psychosocial experience of being overweight resulted in stereotype consistent behaviour (overeating) or in impairments to self-control. Ninety-four women participated in a laboratory study in which they were asked to wear an obese body suit or control clothing in a public setting, before being given access to snack food and alcohol. Clothing condition had no effect on snack food or alcohol consumption. It is possible that the presence of alcohol in the taste test removed the previously observed effect of the obese body suit on snack food consumption

This introduces a new parameter into the general relativistic cylinder description, the fractional index {\alpha}.     Red nuggets grow inside-out: evidence from gravitational lensing

    We present a new sample of strong gravitational lens systems where both the foreground lenses and background sources are early-type galaxies. Using imaging from HST/ACS and Keck/NIRC2, we model the surface brightness distributions and show that the sources form a distinct population of massive, compact galaxies at redshifts 0.4z0.70.4 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.7, lying systematically below the size-mass relation of the global elliptical galaxy population at those redshifts. These may therefore represent relics of high-redshift red nuggets or their partly-evolved descendants. We exploit the magnifying effect of lensing to investigate the structural properties, stellar masses and stellar populations of these objects with a view to understanding their evolution. We model these objects parametrically and find that they generally require two S\'ersic components to properly describe their light profiles, with one more spheroidal component alongside a more envelope-like component, which is slightly more extended though still compact. This is consistent with the hypothesis of the inside-out growth of these objects via minor mergers. We also find that the sources can be characterised by red-to-blue colour gradients as a function of radius which are stronger at low redshift -- indicative of ongoing accretion -- but that their environments generally appear consistent with that of the general elliptical galaxy population, contrary to recent suggestions that these objects are predominantly associated with clusters.Comment: 21 pages; accepted for publication in MNRA

    Fractional derivatives of random walks: Time series with long-time memory

    We review statistical properties of models generated by the application of a (positive and negative order) fractional derivative operator to a standard random walk and show that the resulting stochastic walks display slowly-decaying autocorrelation functions. The relation between these correlated walks and the well-known fractionally integrated autoregressive (FIGARCH) models, commonly used in econometric studies, is discussed. The application of correlated random walks to simulate empirical financial times series is considered and compared with the predictions from FIGARCH and the simpler FIARCH processes.     Some blood indices in finisher broiler chickens fed cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao L.) fermented with Pleurotus ostreatus or treated with enzymes as ingredients in their diets

    The dietary effects of pre-treated cocoa pod husk (CPH) on some blood indices of 21-day old COBB-500 finisher broiler chicks were evaluated in a 35-day experiment with a completely randomized design. The birds were allotted to seven treatments (diets) having 0-g kg-1, 100- g kg-1, 200-g kg-1 and 300-g kg-1 of either Pleurotus ostreatus fermented CPH (PF-CPH) or enzyme (Viscoyme®L+Pectinex®5XL) supplemented CPH (E-CPH). Each treatment was replicated three times with 12 chicks per replicate. The haemoglobin concentration (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), activities of the enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum levels of cholesterol (CH), uric acid, total protein, albumin and globulin were determined. Across dietary treatments Hb, PCV, CH, uric acid and AST activity level in blood of birds varied significantly (P < 0.05). However, there was insignificant influence (P > 0.05) of pre-treated CPH on all the other evaluated parameters among treatment groups. All blood indices measured were within acceptable or reference ranges. The study has revealed that incorporating either E-CPH or PF-CPH up to 30 per cent of broiler finisher diet had no adverse effect on the blood values of the broiler chickens. However, up to 20 per cent PF-CPH and 10 per cent E-CPH incorporation rates for broiler finisher diets, based on best results observed for growth and feed conversion, is recommende
