Design and Construction Methods of Caisson-Type Maritime Infrastructures Using GFRP

    Get PDF
Glass-fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are commonly used in various applications in civil-engineering projects. However, they are not common in the construction of civil-marine structures. The GFRP caisson technology was developed for the construction of two mooring dolphins in Puerto el Rosario (Fuerteventura, Spain). Ultraviolet-protected glass-fiber and epoxy resin coats were used to build a 12-m diameter, 13.3-m high cylindrical structure. A finite-element model was used to verify the sandwich composite configuration using the Tsai?Hill criteria?the shear strength of the skins and honeycomb core and the buckling and local failure modes with respect to the composite configuration. This is the first time that the two caissons were designed and built of polymeric materials and installed in a seaport. Accordingly, the construction technique marks a milestone in civil engineering because of its highly innovative nature in addition to significantly reducing the time associated with and the complexity of construction operations

Evidence for PTGER4, PSCA, and MBOAT7 as risk genes for gastric cancer on the genome and transcriptome level

Genetic associations between variants on chromosome 5p13 and 8q24 and gastric cancer (GC) have been previously reported in the Asian population. We aimed to replicate these findings and to characterize the associations at the genome and transcriptome level. We performed a fine-mapping association study in 1926 GC patients and 2012 controls of European descent using high dense SNP marker sets on both chromosomal regions. Next, we performed expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analyses using gastric transcriptome data from 143 individuals focusing on the GC associated variants. On chromosome 5p13 the strongest association was observed at rs6872282 (P = 2.53 × 10-04) and on chromosome 8q24 at rs2585176 (P = 1.09 × 10-09). On chromosome 5p13 we found cis-eQTL effects with an upregulation of PTGER4 expression in GC risk allele carrier (P = 9.27 × 10-11). On chromosome 8q24 we observed cis-eQTL effects with an upregulation of PSCA expression in GC risk allele carrier (P = 2.17 × 10-47). In addition, we found trans-eQTL effects for the same variants on 8q24 with a downregulation of MBOAT7 expression in GC risk allele carrier (P = 3.11 × 10-09). In summary, we confirmed and refined the previously reported GC associations at both chromosomal regions. Our data point to shared etiological factors between Asians and Europeans. Furthermore, our data imply an upregulated expression of PTGER4 and PSCA as well as a downregulated expression of MBOAT7 in gastric tissue as risk-conferring GC pathomechanisms

4to. Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad. Memoria académica

    Get PDF

Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation with Preliminary Validation of GCOS-24 for Use in Spain

The aim in this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Genetic Counseling Outcome Scale (GCOS-24) for use in Spain and to carry out a preliminary psychometric validation in a sample of Spanish patients. With oversight by an expert panel, forward and backward translations were conducted to create the draft Spanish GCOS-24. Fourteen patients were recruited from a clinical genetics service in Madrid, Spain to participate in cognitive interviews designed to explore readability and interpretability of the draft. Following qualitative analysis of interview transcripts, a final version of the Spanish GCOS-24 was agreed with the expert panel. No significant cross-cultural differences were identified. The Spanish GCOS-24 was then completed prior to and 2-4 weeks after genetic counseling by 59 patients attending the service, and data were analysed using analysis of variance. Preliminary psychometric validation of the Spanish GCOS-24 showed significantly higher GCOS-24 scores after genetic counseling (p<0.0001), with good internal consistency (α=0.84) and sensitivity to change over time, with a medium-to-large size effect (Cohen ́s d=0.70). This compares well with the original English language GCOS-24. Findings demonstrate that the Spanish GCOS-24 has potential for use in evaluating clinical genetics services in Spain, but would benefit from assessment of test-retest reliability as well as structural and construct validity
