    Methodology for evaluating the safety level of current accepted design solutions for limiting fire spread between buildings

    External fire spread between buildings is internationally considered as a major concern for buildings in dense urban environments. While design guidelines differ between countries, the fundamental methods currently used for limiting the risk of fire spread between buildings are generally limited to specifying the minimum required separation distance for a given unprotected façade area, or conversely, limiting the maximum allowable unprotected façade area for a given separation distance. The safety level associated with the current design guidelines is however unknown, making the implementation of innovative, safer and more cost-effective design solutions difficult. In order to assess the safety target implicitly incorporated in currently accepted design solutions, a methodology is developed for evaluating the annual probability of reaching unacceptable radiation intensities at the opposite façade. As a case study, the methodology is applied to a design which is in agreement with the current UK requirements specified in BR 187. This case study exposes inconsistencies in the current design guidelines, indicating the need for developing explicit safety targets

    Nuclear electric propulsion development and qualification facilities

    This paper summarizes the findings of a Tri-Agency panel consisting of members from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) that were charged with reviewing the status and availability of facilities to test components and subsystems for megawatt-class nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) systems. The facilities required to support development of NEP are available in NASA centers, DOE laboratories, and industry. However, several key facilities require significant and near-term modification in order to perform the testing required to meet a 2014 launch date. For the higher powered Mars cargo and piloted missions, the priority established for facility preparation is: (1) a thruster developmental testing facility, (2) a thruster lifetime testing facility, (3) a dynamic energy conversion development and demonstration facility, and (4) an advanced reactor testing facility (if required to demonstrate an advanced multiwatt power system). Facilities to support development of the power conditioning and heat rejection subsystems are available in industry, federal laboratories, and universities. In addition to the development facilities, a new preflight qualifications and acceptance testing facility will be required to support the deployment of NEP systems for precursor, cargo, or piloted Mars missions. Because the deployment strategy for NEP involves early demonstration missions, the demonstration of the SP-100 power system is needed by the early 2000's

    Phonon Properties of Knbo3 and Ktao3 from First-Principles Calculations

    The frequencies of transverse-optical Γ\Gamma phonons in KNbO3_3 and KTaO3_3 are calculated in the frozen-phonon scheme making use of the full-potential linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The calculated frequencies in the cubic phase of KNbO3_3 and in the tetragonal ferroelectric phase are in good agreement with experimental data. For KTaO3_3, the effect of lattice volume was found to be substantial on the frequency of the soft mode, but rather small on the relative displacement patterns of atoms in all three modes of the T1uT_{1u} symmetry. The TO frequencies in KTaO3_3 are found to be of the order of, but somehow higher than, the corresponding frequencies in cubic KNbO3_3.Comment: 8 pages + 1 LaTeX figure, Revtex 3.0, SISSA-CM-94-00

    New distinguished classes of spectral spaces: a survey

    In the present survey paper, we present several new classes of Hochster's spectral spaces "occurring in nature", actually in multiplicative ideal theory, and not linked to or realized in an explicit way by prime spectra of rings. The general setting is the space of the semistar operations (of finite type), endowed with a Zariski-like topology, which turns out to be a natural topological extension of the space of the overrings of an integral domain, endowed with a topology introduced by Zariski. One of the key tool is a recent characterization of spectral spaces, based on the ultrafilter topology, given in a paper by C. Finocchiaro in Comm. Algebra 2014. Several applications are also discussed

    T-PHOT version 2.0: improved algorithms for background subtraction, local convolution, kernel registration, and new options

    We present the new release v2.0 of T-PHOT, a publicly available software package developed to perform PSF-matched, prior-based, multiwavelength deconfusion photometry of extragalactic fields. New features included in the code are presented and discussed: background estimation, fitting using position dependent kernels, flux prioring, diagnostical statistics on the residual image, exclusion of selected sources from the model and residual images, individual registration of fitted objects. These new options improve on the performance of the code, allowing for more accurate results and providing useful aids for diagnostics.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Combined effects due to phase, intensity and contrast in electrooptic modulation. Application to ferroelectric materials

    The combination of phase, intensity, and contrast effects during electrooptic modulation is theoretically and exper- imentally investigated. One consequence of this combination is the modification of the amplitude of the single-frequency signals which are commonly used as working points for electrooptic mod- ulators and for the measurements of the electrooptic coefficients. Another consequence of direct intensity modulation is to shift the double-frequency points of the transfer function from the positions they normally occupy at the intensity extrema. They can even make them disappear if the direct intensity modulation is stronger than the phase modulation. Such phenomena are expected with any ferroelectric material in which a significant part of the incident light is deflected or scattered by domain walls or grain boundaries. They can lead to considerable mistakes in the determination of the electrooptic coefficients. Appropriate procedures to extract the different contributions are explained. Experimental results in rubidium hydrogen selenate are given, and consequences of the working of electrooptic modulators are discussed
