Solar domestic water heating : selecting equipment
Date taken from stamp on front page"File: Housing""A present-day solar domestic water heating system represents a sizable investment. 1981 installed costs for a well designed, manufactured active system will run from 3,000. To most families an expenditure of this magnitude will fall in the "major" category requiring considerable thought and comparison before making a selection. The aim of this guide is to present an overview of state-of-the-art solar domestic water heating equipment along with some suggestions that a potential solar consumer might follow in making a wise decision. This guide will not deal with do-it-yourself, home-made water heating equipment but will look instead at manufactured active, liquid systems."--First paragraph."Bob Cusick is a UMC Housing Specialist working in the Mid-Missouri area."Includes bibliographical reference
Heat pumps - how they work, how they're rated
"File: Housing, 3/83/2M""Heat energy will flow naturally from a warm area to a cooler one. For example, heat flows from a warm house to the cold outdoors or from a warm kitchen into a cold refrigerator compartment. In contrast, a heat pump works against this natural flow by using a refrigerant to transfer heat from a cool area to a warmer one. To accomplish this, the heat pump uses two coils. One coil contains a low-pressure liquid that is cooler than the air being heated, and a second coil contains a high pressure vapor that is hotter than the surrounding air."--First paragraphJ. Water-to-air heat pumps
Date taken from stamp on front page"Like the air-to-air heat pump, the water-source heat pump has been around a long time. The pump has been secluded to the point that even professional HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning) tradesmen in parts of the country are unable to con verse on the subject due to a lack of understanding of this remarkable machine. Even today, distributors and sales representatives of companies manufacturing the machine are reluctant to discuss the water-to-air heat pump. The obvious question is why? If a device is that good, why is it relatively unknown?"--Second paragraphJ. Robert Cusick (Area Housing Specialist)Includes bibliographical reference
Weatherstripping doors
"File: Household Equipment, 10/78/8M""These guides were originally printed through a grant from the Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Energy Agency, to Dr. Walter Heidlage, department of agricultural engineering, University of Missouri--Columbia. All information was approved by UMC specialists.""Factory-applied weatherstripping on doors is only a recent innovation. As a result, the exterior doors in thousands of homes throughout the state possess little or not weather stripping. Most doors are installed with a space between the bottom of the door and the floor or threshold. Sometimes this space can amount to as much as one fourth of an inch or more. If weather stripping is not used this crack allows large amounts of air to flow in and out of the house. This is known as infiltration."--First paragraph."J. Robert Cusick (Area Housing Specialist
