    This contribution reviews a number of applications of the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) within nuclear physics and beyond. We will highlight a nuclear-structure study of the A = 12 isobar using a chiral NN + 3NF interaction. In the spirit of this workshop we will also mention the new development of the NCSM formalism to describe open channels and to approach the problem of nuclear reactions. Finally, we will illustrate the universality of the many-body problem by presenting the recent adaptation of the NCSM effective-interaction approach to study the many-boson problem in an external trapping potential with short-range interactions.Comment: 4 pages.     Energy averages and fluctuations in the decay out of superdeformed bands

    We derive analytic formulae for the energy average (including the energy average of the fluctuation contribution) and variance of the intraband decay intensity of a superdeformed band. Our results may be expressed in terms of three dimensionless variables: Γ/ΓS\Gamma^{\downarrow}/\Gamma_S, ΓN/d\Gamma_N/d, and ΓN/(ΓS+Γ)\Gamma_N/(\Gamma_S+\Gamma^{\downarrow}). Here Γ\Gamma^{\downarrow} is the spreading width for the mixing of a superdeformed (SD) state 0>|0> with the normally deformed (ND) states Q>|Q> whose spin is the same as 0>|0>'s. The Q>|Q> have mean level spacing dd and mean electromagnetic decay width ΓN\Gamma_N whilst 0>|0> has electromagnetic decay width ΓS\Gamma_S. The average decay intensity may be expressed solely in terms of the variables Γ/ΓS\Gamma^{\downarrow}/\Gamma_S and ΓN/d\Gamma_N/d or, analogously to statistical nuclear reaction theory, in terms of the transmission coefficients T0(E)T_0(E) and TNT_N describing transmission from the Q>|Q> to the SD band via 0|0\angle and to lower ND states. The variance of the decay intensity, in analogy with Ericson's theory of cross section fluctuations depends on an additional variable, the correlation length \Gamma_N/(\Gamma_S+\Gamma^{\downarrow})=\frac{d}{2\pi}T_N/(\Gamma_S+\Gamma^{\d ownarrow}). This suggests that analysis of an experimentally obtained variance could yield the mean level spacing dd as does analysis of the cross section autocorrelation function in compound nuclear reactions.     Neonatal Blood Methylation Marks Associated with Obstetric Pain Relief

    The placenta, responsible for intrauterine development, can facilitate modifications within the placental epigenome in response to changes in the mother. In turn these changes have the potential to also influence the neonate1. Pain relief during delivery is widely used and frequently involves the use of nitrous oxide (N2O, commonly referred to as laughing gas), and pudendal blocks. These treatments, alone or in combination, are generally accepted as safe methods of providing pain relief to mothers. However, laughing gas and local anesthetics such as the ones used during pudendal blocks have been known to cross the placental barrier from mother to child2,3. Furthermore, although current literature about the effects of laughing gas and pudendal blocks on the epigenome, when used as maternal pain relief, is very limited, some evidence implicates effects of obstetric anesthesia on the neonatal methylome2,4,5. Thus, it is reasonable to hypothesize that obstetric pain relief administered to the mother during childbirth may affect the methylome of the child. In conclusion, we detected methylome-wide significantly associated loci for laughing gas and pudendal block treatment when studied in combination, but not for either of the treatments separately.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1421/thumbnail.jp

    Tests and applications of self-consistent cranking in the interacting boson model

    The self-consistent cranking method is tested by comparing the cranking calculations in the interacting boson model with the exact results obtained from the SU(3) and O(6) dynamical symmetries and from numerical diagonalization. The method is used to study the spin dependence of shape variables in the sdsd and sdgsdg boson models. When realistic sets of parameters are used, both models lead to similar results: axial shape is retained with increasing cranking frequency while fluctuations in the shape variable γ\gamma are slightly reduced.Comment: 9 pages, 3 ps figures, Revte

    Calculation of the photoionization with de-excitation cross sections of He and helium-like ions

    We discuss the results of the calculation of the photoionization with de-excitation of excited He and helium-like ions Li+^{+} and B3+^{3+} at high but non-relativistic photon energies ω\omega . Several lower 1S^{1}S and 3S^{3}S states are considered. We present and analyze the ratios Rd+R_{d}^{+\ast} of the cross sections of photoionization with de-excitation, σ(d)+(ω)\sigma_{(d)}^{+\ast}(\omega), and of the photo-ionization with excitation, σ+(ω)\sigma ^{+\ast}(\omega). The dependence of Rd+R_{d}^{+\ast} on the excitation of the target object and the charge of its nucleus is presented. Apart to theoretical interest, results obtained can be verified using such long living excited state as 23S2^{3}S of He.Comment: 10 pages, 6 table

    Abstract Post-Mortem Brain Nuclei Isolation for Single Nucleus RNA Sequencing Charles Tran, Dept. of Biology, with Dr. Karolina Aberg, VCU School of Pharmacy When tissue samples are studied in bulk without consideration for different cell proportions and types, results can be biased due to the attenuation of unique cellular expressions. In order to study cell type specific RNA expression profiles within tissue, single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is used. For scRNA-seq studies it is critical to have intact cells. However, when investigating frozen post-mortem brain tissue, it is often challenging to isolate intact whole cells. An alternative solution is to instead isolate nuclei (which have similar, but not identical, transcriptomes to cells) and then perform single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq). In this study we have carefully optimized a protocol for nuclei extraction from post-mortem brain cells suitable for downstream snRNA-seq analysis. We found that adjusting our protocol to include less aggressive methods of tissue homogenization and sample-retaining lab techniques has resulted in the successful removal of cell debris and myelin alongside providing a workable sample size. In conclusion we have successfully evaluated and prepared enough high-quality nuclei for downstream scRNA-seq using our optimized protocol.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1398/thumbnail.jp

    A measure of majorisation emerging from single-shot statistical mechanics

    The use of the von Neumann entropy in formulating the laws of thermodynamics has recently been challenged. It is associated with the average work whereas the work guaranteed to be extracted in any single run of an experiment is the more interesting quantity in general. We show that an expression that quantifies majorisation determines the optimal guaranteed work. We argue it should therefore be the central quantity of statistical mechanics, rather than the von Neumann entropy. In the limit of many identical and independent subsystems (asymptotic i.i.d) the von Neumann entropy expressions are recovered but in the non-equilbrium regime the optimal guaranteed work can be radically different to the optimal average. Moreover our measure of majorisation governs which evolutions can be realized via thermal interactions, whereas the nondecrease of the von Neumann entropy is not sufficiently restrictive.
