The electronic spectra of protonated PANH molecules
Aims. This study was designed to examine the viability of protonated
nitrogen-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (H+PANHs) as candidates
for the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Methods. We obtained
the electronic spectra of two protonated PANH cations, protonated acridine and
phenanthridine, using parent ion photo-fragment spectroscopy and generated
theoretical electronic spectra using ab initio calculations. Results. We show
that the spectra of the two species studied here do not correspond to known
DIBs. However, based on the general properties derived from the spectra of
these small protonated nitrogen-substituted PAHs, we propose that larger H+PANH
cations represent good candidates for DIB carriers due to the expected
positions of their electronic transitions in the UV-visible and their narrow
spectral bands.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Behavioral Differences Between Two Recently Sympatric Paper Wasps, the Native \u3ci\u3ePolistes Fuscatus\u3c/i\u3e and the Invasive \u3ci\u3ePolistes Dominulus\u3c/i\u3e
Polistes dominulus (Christ), an old world paper wasp, was introduced into the eastern United States in the 1970s and has been rapidly spreading westward. Recently, it has displaced the native Polistes fuscatus (F.) in at least some areas of Michigan. In order to understand why P. dominulus has been so successful, several behavioral attributes were compared between P. dominulus and P. fuscatus at a Michigan field site that contained colonies of both species nest- ing semi-naturally in plywood nestboxes.
Preworker colonies of P. dominulus had a significantly greater tendency to store nectar (and had significantly higher proportions of cells with nectar) than preworker colonies of P. fuscatus. This finding may explain the higher survivorship of P. dominulus foundresses reported in a previous study. P. dominulus also had a significantly greater tendency to build vertical nests and had significantly more pedicels per comb and per cell than P. fuscatus. These findings suggest that compared to P. fuscatus, P. dominulus may have more flexibility in the positioning of its combs and, because of a possibly stronger attachment of the comb to a substrate, may be less susceptible to bird predation. The higher winter survivorship reported for P. fuscatus over P. dominulus in a previous study does not appear to be due to differences in the proportions of gynes stranded on their nests late in the fall. Finally, behavioral evidence from videography was consistent with previous reports that P. dominulus is not replacing P. fuscatus through direct agonistic interactions
Feature Tracking Cardiac Magnetic Resonance via Deep Learning and Spline Optimization
Feature tracking Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) has recently emerged as an
area of interest for quantification of regional cardiac function from balanced,
steady state free precession (SSFP) cine sequences. However, currently
available techniques lack full automation, limiting reproducibility. We propose
a fully automated technique whereby a CMR image sequence is first segmented
with a deep, fully convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, and
quadratic basis splines are fitted simultaneously across all cardiac frames
using least squares optimization. Experiments are performed using data from 42
patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 21 healthy control
subjects. In terms of segmentation, we compared state-of-the-art CNN
frameworks, U-Net and dilated convolution architectures, with and without
temporal context, using cross validation with three folds. Performance relative
to expert manual segmentation was similar across all networks: pixel accuracy
was ~97%, intersection-over-union (IoU) across all classes was ~87%, and IoU
across foreground classes only was ~85%. Endocardial left ventricular
circumferential strain calculated from the proposed pipeline was significantly
different in control and disease subjects (-25.3% vs -29.1%, p = 0.006), in
agreement with the current clinical literature.Comment: Accepted to Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart (FIMH) 201
Recent Brachiopods from Malta
Six species of Recent Brachiopoda, obtained by the authors from both shallow and deep waters around Malta, are listed, briefly described and illustrated. Other Mediterranean brachiopod species which might be expected to be present in this region are also listed, in the hope they might be recorded in the future by local naturalists.peer-reviewe
Alkaline static feed electrolyzer based oxygen generation system
In preparation for the future deployment of the Space Station, an R and D program was established to demonstrate integrated operation of an alkaline Water Electrolysis System and a fuel cell as an energy storage device. The program's scope was revised when the Space Station Control Board changed the energy storage baseline for the Space Station. The new scope was aimed at the development of an alkaline Static Feed Electrolyzer for use in an Environmental Control/Life Support System as an oxygen generation system. As a result, the program was divided into two phases. The phase 1 effort was directed at the development of the Static Feed Electrolyzer for application in a Regenerative Fuel Cell System. During this phase, the program emphasized incorporation of the Regenerative Fuel Cell System design requirements into the Static Feed Electrolyzer electrochemical module design and the mechanical components design. The mechanical components included a Pressure Control Assembly, a Water Supply Assembly and a Thermal Control Assembly. These designs were completed through manufacturing drawing during Phase 1. The Phase 2 effort was directed at advancing the Alkaline Static Feed Electrolyzer database for an oxygen generation system. This development was aimed at extending the Static Feed Electrolyzer database in areas which may be encountered from initial fabrication through transportation, storage, launch and eventual Space Station startup. During this Phase, the Program emphasized three major areas: materials evaluation, electrochemical module scaling and performance repeatability and Static Feed Electrolyzer operational definition and characterization
A kinetic model of radiating electrons
A kinetic theory is developed to describe radiating electrons whose motion is governed by the Lorentz-Dirac equation. This gives rise to a generalized Vlasov equation coupled to an equation for the evolution of the physical submanifold of phase space. The pathological solutions of the 1-particle theory may be removed by expanding the latter equation in powers of τ ≔ q 2/6πm. The radiation-induced change in entropy is explored and its physical origin is discussed. As a simple demonstration of the theory, the radiative damping rate of longitudinal plasma waves is calculated
Comparative Microbial Dynamics in Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis
Considerations to introduce the Suminoe or Asian oyster Crassostrea ariakensis along the East Coast have raised many questions regarding ecology, economics, and human health. To date, research has focused primarily on the ecological and socioeconomic implications of this initiative, yet few studies have assessed its potential
impact on public health. Our work compares the rates of bioaccumulation, depuration and post harvest decay of indicator organisms (such as E. coli) and Vibrio sp. between
Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis in the laboratory. Preliminary results suggest that the rates of bioaccumulation of E. coli in Crassostrea ariakensis were
significantly lower than those for Crassostrea virginica, depuration of E. coli was variable between the two species, and Crassostrea ariakensis post harvest decay rates of
Vibrio sp. were significantly lower than Crassostrea virginica. This research provides coastal managers with insight into the response of Crassostrea ariakensis to bacteria, an important consideration for determining appropriate management strategies for this species. Further field-based studies will be necessary to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the differences in rates of bioaccumulation and depuration. (PDF contains 40 pages
