    High Energy Quark-Antiquark Elastic scattering with Mesonic Exchange

    We studies the high energy elastic scattering of quark anti-quark with an exchange of a mesonic state in the tt channel with t/Λ21-t/\Lambda^{2} \gg 1. Both the normalization factor and the Regge trajectory can be calculated in PQCD in cases of fixed (non-running) and running coupling constant. The dependence of the Regge trajectory on the coupling constant is highly non-linear and the trajectory is of order of 0.20.2 in the interesting physical range.Comment: 29 page

    Evaporation of a two-dimensional charged black hole

    We construct a dilatonic two-dimensional model of a charged black hole. The classical solution is a static charged black hole, characterized by two parameters, mm and qq, representing the black hole's mass and charge. Then we study the semiclassical effects, and calculate the evaporation rate of both mm and qq, as a function of these two quantities. Analyzing this dynamical system, we find two qualitatively different regimes, depending on the electromagnetic coupling constant gAg_{A}. If the latter is greater than a certain critical value, the charge-to-mass ratio decays to zero upon evaporation. On the other hand, for gAg_{A} smaller than the critical value, the charge-to-mass ratio approaches a non-zero constant that depends on gAg_{A} but not on the initial values of mm and qq.Comment: Latex, 30 pages, accepted for publication in Phys.     “Model age-based” and “copy when uncertain” biases in children’s social learning of a novel task

    This work was supported by a John Templeton Foundation grant (40128).Theoretical models of social learning predict that individuals can benefit from using strategies that specify when and whom to copy. Here the interaction of two social learning strategies, model age-based biased copying and copy when uncertain, was investigated. Uncertainty was created via a systematic manipulation of demonstration efficacy (completeness) and efficiency (causal relevance of some actions). The participants, 4- to 6-year-old children (N = 140), viewed both an adult model and a child model, each of whom used a different tool on a novel task. They did so in a complete condition, a near-complete condition, a partial demonstration condition, or a no-demonstration condition. Half of the demonstrations in each condition incorporated causally irrelevant actions by the models. Social transmission was assessed by first responses but also through children’s continued fidelity, the hallmark of social traditions. Results revealed a bias to copy the child model both on first response and in continued interactions. Demonstration efficacy and efficiency did not affect choice of model at first response but did influence solution exploration across trials, with demonstrations containing causally irrelevant actions decreasing exploration of alternative methods. These results imply that uncertain environments can result in canalized social learning from specific classes of model.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Comparison of p53 and DNA content abnormalities in adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia.

    This study examined the association between 17p allelic loss, p53 gene mutation, p53 protein expression and DNA aneuploidy in a series of adenocarcinomas arising in the oesophagus and gastric cardia. 17p allelic loss was detected in 79% (15 of 19) of oesophageal and in 83% (29 of 35) of gastric adenocarcinomas. p53 mutations were detected in 70% (14 of 20) and 63% (26 of 41) of oesophageal and of gastric adenocarcinomas respectively. Both tumour types were associated with a predominance of base transitions at CpG dinucleotides. In five cases of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, the same mutation was detected both in tumour and in adjacent dysplastic Barrett's epithelium. Diffuse p53 protein expression was detected in 65% (13 of 20) and 59% (24 of 41) of oesophageal and of gastric tumours, respectively, and was associated with the presence of p53 missense mutation (Chi-squared, P < 0.0001). DNA aneuploidy was detected in 80% (16 of 20) of oesophageal and in 70% (28 of 40) of gastric tumours. No association was found between p53 or DNA content abnormalities and tumour stage or histological subtype. In conclusion, this study detected a similar pattern of p53 alterations in adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia--molecular data consistent with the observation that these tumours demonstrate similar clinical and epidemiological features

    The effect of blood pressure on mortality following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest : a retrospective cohort study of the United Kingdom Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre database

Current guidelines recommend avoiding hypotension. However, the optimal blood pressure following OHCA is unknown. We hypothesised that exposure to hypotension and hypertension in the first 24 h in ICU would be associated with mortality following OHCA. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of OHCA patients included in the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre Case Mix Programme from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2019. Restricted cubic splines were created following adjustment for important prognostic variables. We report the adjusted odds ratio for associations between lowest and highest mean arterial pressure (MAP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the first 24 h of ICU care and hospital mortality. Results: A total of 32,349 patients were included in the analysis. Hospital mortality was 56.2%. The median lowest and highest MAP and SBP were similar in survivors and non-survivors. Both hypotension and hypertension were associated with increased mortality. Patients who had a lowest recorded MAP in the range 60-63 mmHg had the lowest associated mortality. Patients who had a highest recorded MAP in the range 95-104 mmHg had the lowest associated mortality. The association between SBP and mortality followed a similar pattern to MAP. Conclusions: We found an association between hypotension and hypertension in the first 24 h in ICU and mortality following OHCA. The inability to distinguish between the median blood pressure of survivors and non-survivors indicates the need for research into individualised blood pressure targets for survivors following OHCA.Peer reviewe

    Do Children Copy an Expert or a Majority? Examining Selective Learning in Instrumental and Normative Contexts

This study examined whether instrumental and normative learning contexts differentially influence 4- to 7-year-old children's social learning strategies; specifically, their dispositions to copy an expert versus a majority consensus. Experiment 1 (N = 44) established that children copied a relatively competent "expert" individual over an incompetent individual in both kinds of learning context. In experiment 2 (N = 80) we then tested whether children would copy a competent individual versus a majority, in each of the two different learning contexts. Results showed that individual children differed in strategy, preferring with significant consistency across two different test trials to copy either the competent individual or the majority. This study is the first to show that children prefer to copy more competent individuals when shown competing methods of achieving an instrumental goal (Experiment 1) and provides new evidence that children, at least in our "individualist" culture, may consistently express either a competency or majority bias in learning both instrumental and normative information (Experiment 2).
