Raman phonons as a probe of disorder, fluctuations and local structure in doped and undoped orthorhombic and rhombohedral manganites

We present a rationalization of the Raman spectra of orthorhombic and rhombohedral, stoichiometric and doped, manganese perovskites. In particular we study RMnO3 (R= La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Y and Ca) and the different phases of Ca or Sr doped RMnO3 compounds as well as cation deficient RMnO3. The spectra of manganites can be understood as combinations of two kinds of spectra corresponding to two structural configurations of MnO6 octahedra and independently of the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. The main peaks of compounds with regular MnO6 octahedra, as CaMnO3, highly Ca doped LaMnO3 or the metallic phases of Ca or Sr doped LaMnO3, are bending and tilt MnO6 octahedra modes which correlate to R-O(1) bonds and Mn-O-Mn angles respectively. In low and optimally doped manganites, the intensity and width of the broad bands are related to the amplitude of the dynamic fluctuations produced by polaron hopping in the paramagnetic insulating regime. The activation energy, which is proportional to the polaron binding energy, is the measure of this amplitude. This study permits to detect and confirm the coexistence, in several compounds, of a paramagnetic matrix with lattice polaron together with regions without dynamic or static octahedron distortions, identical to the ferromagnetic metallic phase. We show that Raman spectroscopy is an excellent tool to obtain information on the local structure of the different micro or macro-phases present simultaneously in many manganites.Comment: Submitted to PR

The interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and Lifshitz localization in doped manganites

    Get PDF
Considering the disorder caused in manganites by the substitution of Mn by Fe or Ga, we accomplish a systematic study of doped manganites begun in previous papers. To this end, a disordered model is formulated and solved using the Variational Mean Field technique. The subtle interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and disorder causes similar effects on the dependence of T_C on the percentage of Mn substitution in the cases considered. Yet, in La2/3_{2/3}Ca1/3_{1/3}Mn1y_{1-y}Gay_yO3_3 our results suggest a quantum critical point (QCP) for y0.10.2y\approx 0.1-0.2, associated to the localization of the electronic states of the conduction band. In the case of Lax_xCax_xMn1y_{1-y}Fey_yO3_3 (with x=1/3,3/8x=1/3,3/8) no such QCP is expected.Comment: 6 pages + 3 postscript figures. Largely extended discussio

Human-vehicle interaction for autonomous vehicles in crosswalk scenarios: Field experiments with pedestrians and passengers

This paper presents the results of real-world testing of human-vehicle interactions with an autonomous vehicle equipped with internal and external Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) in a crosswalk scenario. The internal and external HMIs were combined with implicit communication techniques using gentle and aggressive braking maneuvers in the crosswalk. Results have been collected in the form of questionnaires and measurable variables such as distance or speed when the pedestrian decides to cross. The questionnaires show that pedestrians feel safer when the external HMI or the gentle braking maneuver is used interchangeably, while the measured variables show that external HMI only helps in combination with the gentle braking maneuver. The questionnaires also show that internal HMI only improves passenger confidence in combination with the aggressive braking maneuver.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, conferecence pape

Phase diagram and influence of defects in the double perovskites

The phase diagram of the double perovskites of the type Sr_{2-x} La_x Fe Mo O_6 is analyzed, with and without disorder due to antisites. In addition to an homogeneous half metallic ferrimagnetic phase in the absence of doping and disorder, we find antiferromagnetic phases at large dopings, and other ferrimagnetic phases with lower saturation magnetization, in the presence of disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, some errata correcte

Si intralayers at GaAs/AlAs and GaAs/GaAs junctions: Polar versus nonpolar interfaces

    Get PDF
The effect of inserting thin Si intralayers at GaAs/AlAs and GaAs/GaAs interfaces has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) using synchrotron radiation. Results from polar and nonpolar interfaces are compared by analyzing samples grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on (100) and (110) substrates, respectively. The Si intralayers were inserted by an improved δ-doping method in a concentration of 2.2×1014 cm−2 [about 1/3 of a (100) monolayer]. When Si is introduced at GaAs-on-AlAs interfaces, the Al(2p)-to-Ga(3d) energy distance is observed to increase for both polar and nonpolar interface orientations. The insertion of Si at GaAs/GaAs(110) homojunctions modifies the line shape of the Ga(3d) and As(3d) peaks, resembling the changes previously reported for the (100) orientation. The results on polar junctions previously obtained were generally interpreted as band-offset changes, which would be related according to the “interface microscopic capacitor” picture with the polar nature of the interface. The PES results here presented are difficult to reconcile with such a model because of the similar behavior shown by polar and nonpolar interfaces. Instead, they can be understood within an “overlayer band bending” interpretation

Direct determination of Pb isotope ratios in archaeological materials by coupling liquid chromatography to multicollector ICP-MS

    Get PDF
A procedure for the determination of Pb isotope ratios by coupling liquid chromatography to a multicollector ICP-MS has been developed. The procedure allows the direct injection of samples after dissolution without resorting to time-consuming off-line separation procedures. The separation of Pb from concomitant elements is carried out by anionic exchange as ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelates using EDTA and ammonium nitrate as a mobile phase. A flow injection system allows the injection of NIST 981 Pb isotopic standard, before and after the Pb peak from the sample, and the on-line addition of Tl for mass bias correction and bracketing. The procedure was validated by injecting NIST 981 into the chromatographic system and by comparing the results for real samples with the classical off-line separation procedure using Pb spec resins. The optimised procedure was applied to archaeological samples containing different concentrations of Pb. It was observed that the only limitation to the accuracy of the procedure was the concentration of Pb in the samples as no preconcentration is performed. Solid archaeological samples containing at least 500 μg g−1 of Pb can be studied using the proposed procedure

Violation of quark-hadron duality and spectral chiral moments in QCD

We analyze the spectral moments of the V-A two-point correlation function. Using all known short-distance constraints and the most recent experimental data from tau decays, we determine the lowest spectral moments, trying to assess the uncertainties associated with the so-called violations of quark-hadron duality. We have generated a large number of 'acceptable' spectral functions, satisfying all conditions, and have used them to extract the wanted hadronic parameters through a careful statistical analysis. We obtain accurate values for the ChPT couplings L10 and C87, and a realistic determination of the dimension six and eight contributions in the operator product expansion, O6=(-5.4^{+3.6}_{-1.6})*10^-3 GeV^6 and O8=(-8.9^{+12.6}_{-7.4})*10^-3 GeV^8, showing that the duality-violation effects have been usually underestimated in previous literature

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Nd-Co alloy films nanostructured by di-block copolymer templates

    Get PDF
et al.Nd-Co amorphous magnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been grown on nanostructured templates prepared with self-organized di-block poly(styrene)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) copolymer layers with a periodic structure of 60 nm spaced pores. These templates modify both the magnetic film topography and mechanical strain on a local scale. The effect of these structural changes is particularly noticeable in the low thickness range of the magnetic films where the transition from in-plane to out-of plane magnetization takes place. The Nd-Co films grown on the copolymer template present lower perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and, also, stronger stripe domain pinning effects in comparison with reference films grown on flat Si substrates. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.Work supported by Spanish MEC under Grants FIS2008-06249 and Consolider CSD2007-00010 and by CAM under Grant S2009/MAT-1726.Peer Reviewe
