Macroscopic Quantum Phase Interference in Antiferromagnetic Particles
The tunnel splitting in biaxial antiferromagnetic particles is studied with a
magnetic field applied along the hard anisotropy axis. We observe the
oscillation of tunnel splitting as a function of the magnetic field due to the
quantum phase interference of two tunneling paths of opposite windings. The
oscillation is similar to the recent experimental result with Fe}\textrm{\
molecular clusters.}Comment: 8 pages, 2 postscript figures, to appear in J. Phys.: Condes. Matte

EEG arousal prediction via hypoxemia indicator in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep breathing disorder characterized by recurrent airflow obstruction caused by a total or partial collapse of the upper airway. OSAS is a common affliction suffered by millions. The arousal index (ArI) is the best predictor of daytime somnolence for patients with OSAS, however, the polysomnography (PSG) examination in the sleep lab is expensive, time consuming and labor intensive. The objective of this study is to evaluate the ability and reliability of arousal prediction via the hypoxemia indicator in patients with OSAS. Patients with a diagnosis of OSAS by standard polysomnography were recruited from China Medical University Hospital Centre. There were 248 patients in the learning set and 255 patients in the validation set. The presence of OSAS was defined as an Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) >5/h. We used the hypoxemia indicator to predict ArI in patients with OSAS by linear regression and evaluated the prediction performance in different clinical characteristics subsets. The standard error of estimate of ArI prediction was 12.9 in the learning set. For predicting the severity of ArI, for ArI exceeding 15/h or 30/h, the sensitivity was 53.4% and 75.7%, respectively, with corresponding specificity of 96.6%, and 77.4%, respectively. We analyzed the hypoxemia indicator for predicting the severity of sleep fragmentation. The result demonstrated it ispossible to predict ArI via the hypoxemia indicator, especially in severepatients
Tunnel splitting and quantum phase interference in biaxial ferrimagnetic particles at excited states
The tunneling splitting in biaxial ferrimagnetic particles at excited states
with an explicit calculation of the prefactor of exponent is obtained in terms
of periodic instantons which are responsible for tunneling at excited states
and is shown as a function of magnetic field applied along an arbitrary
direction in the plane of hard and medium axes. Using complex time
path-integral we demonstrate the oscillation of tunnel splitting with respect
to the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field due to the quantum
phase interference of two tunneling paths of opposite windings . The
oscillation is gradually smeared and in the end the tunnel splitting
monotonously increases with the magnitude of the magnetic field when the
direction of the magnetic field tends to the medium axis. The oscillation
behavior is similar to the recent experimental observation with Fe
molecular clusters. A candidate of possible experiments to observe the effect
of quantum phase interference in the ferrimagnetic particles is proposed.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, acceptted to be pubblished in Physical Review
Cannabinoid Receptor Blockade Reveals Parallel Plasticity Mechanisms in Different Layers of Mouse Visual Cortex
SummaryThe ocular dominance (OD) shift that occurs in visual cortex after brief monocular deprivation (MD) is a classic model of experience-dependent cortical plasticity. It has been suggested that OD plasticity in layer 2/3 of visual cortex precedes and is necessary for plasticity in the thalamocortical input layer 4. Here, we show in mouse visual cortex that rapid OD plasticity occurs simultaneously in layers 2/3 and 4. Remarkably, pharmacological blockade of cannabinoid receptors completely prevents the OD shift in layer 2/3, leaving plasticity intact in layer 4. Thus, experience-dependent cortical modifications in layers 2/3 and 4 can occur in parallel, via distinct mechanisms. These findings simplify the mechanistic description of plasticity in layer 4, force a revision in the interpretation of previous studies in which laminar differences in OD plasticity mechanisms were unrecognized, and have important implications for the therapeutic use of cannabinoid receptor antagonists in humans
Experimental Studies of Low-field Landau Quantization in Two-dimensional Electron Systems in GaAs/AlGaAs Heterostructures
By applying a magnetic field perpendicular to GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional
electron systems, we study the low-field Landau quantization when the thermal
damping is reduced with decreasing the temperature. Magneto-oscillations
following Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) formula are observed even when their
amplitudes are so large that the deviation to such a formula is expected. Our
experimental results show the importance of the positive magneto-resistance to
the extension of SdH formula under the damping induced by the disorder.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
An experimental study on (2) modular symmetry in the quantum Hall system with a small spin-splitting
Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions were studied with a two-dimensional
electron AlGaAs/GaAs system. The temperature-driven flow diagram shows the
features of the (2) modular symmetry, which includes distorted
flowlines and shiftted critical point. The deviation of the critical
conductivities is attributed to a small but resolved spin splitting, which
reduces the symmetry in Landau quantization. [B. P. Dolan, Phys. Rev. B 62,
10278.] Universal scaling is found under the reduction of the modular symmetry.
It is also shown that the Hall conductivity could still be governed by the
scaling law when the semicircle law and the scaling on the longitudinal
conductivity are invalid. *corresponding author:[email protected]: The revised manuscript has been published in J. Phys.: Condens.

Deformations of the hemisphere that increase scalar curvature
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold M of dimension n whose boundary
\partial M is totally geodesic and is isometric to the standard sphere S^{n-1}.
A natural conjecture of Min-Oo asserts that if the scalar curvature of M is at
least n(n-1), then M is isometric to the hemisphere S_+^n equipped with its
standard metric. This conjecture is inspired by the positive mass theorem in
general relativity, and has been verified in many special cases. In this paper,
we construct counterexamples to Min-Oo's conjecture in dimension n \geq 3.Comment: Revised version, to appear in Invent. Mat
Macroscopic Quantum Coherence in Small Antiferromagnetic Particle and the Quantum Interference Effects
Starting from the Hamiltonian operator of the noncompensated two-sublattice
model of a small antiferromagnetic particle, we derive the effective Lagrangian
of a biaxial antiferromagnetic particle in an external magnetic field with the
help of spin-coherent-state path integrals. Two unequal level-shifts induced by
tunneling through two types of barriers are obtained using the instanton
method. The energy spectrum is found from Bloch theory regarding the periodic
potential as a superlattice. The external magnetic field indeed removes
Kramers' degeneracy, however a new quenching of the energy splitting depending
on the applied magnetic field is observed for both integer and half-integer
spins due to the quantum interference between transitions through two types of
barriers.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 4 Postscript figure
