    Thermodynamic assessment of the Cu-Ge binary system

    The Cu-Ge binary system was assessed thermodynamically using the CALPHAD method through Thermocalc (R) software package based on the evaluation of all available experimental data from the published literature. The solution phases, including liquid, fcc, hcp and diamond (Ge), were described by the substitutional solution model, of which the excess Gibbs energies were expressed with the Redlich-Kister polynomial. Due to their narrow homogeneity ranges, all intermetallic compounds, epsilon-Cu0.765Ge0.235, theta-Cu0.735Ge0.265 and eta-Cu0.75Ge0.25, were modeled as stoichiometric compounds. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters formulating the Gibbs energies of various phases in the Cu-Ge binary system was obtained finally. A good agreement is achieved between the calculated results and the reported experimental data. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Muon Catalyzed Fusion in 3 K Solid Deuterium

    Muon catalyzed fusion in deuterium has traditionally been studied in gaseous and liquid targets. The TRIUMF solid-hydrogen-layer target system has been used to study the fusion reaction rates in the solid phase of D_2 at a target temperature of 3 K. Products of two distinct branches of the reaction were observed; neutrons by a liquid organic scintillator, and protons by a silicon detector located inside the target system. The effective molecular formation rate from the upper hyperfine state of μd\mu d and the hyperfine transition rate have been measured: λ~(3/2)=2.71(7)stat.(32)syst.μ/s\tilde{\lambda}_(3/2)=2.71(7)_{stat.}(32)_{syst.} \mu/s, and λ~(3/2)(1/2)=34.2(8)stat.(1)syst.μ/s\tilde{\lambda}_{(3/2)(1/2)} =34.2(8)_{stat.}(1)_{syst.} \mu /s. The molecular formation rate is consistent with other recent measurements, but not with the theory for isolated molecules. The discrepancy may be due to incomplete thermalization, an effect which was investigated by Monte Carlo calculations.     Control of field- and current-driven magnetic domain wall motion by exchange bias in Cr2 O3/Co/Pt trilayers

    We investigate the motion of magnetic domain walls driven by magnetic fields and current-driven spin-orbit torques in an exchange-biased system with perpendicular magnetization. We consider Cr2O3/Co/Pt trilayers as a model system, in which the magnetization of the Co layer can be exchanged biased out-of-plane or in-plane depending on the field-cooling direction. In field-driven experiments, the in-plane exchange bias favors the propagation of the domain walls with internal magnetization parallel to the exchange-bias field. In current-driven experiments, the domain walls propagate along the current direction, but the domain wall velocity increases and decreases symmetrically (antisymmetrically) for both current polarities when the exchange bias is parallel (perpendicular) to the current line. At zero external field, the exchange bias modifies the velocity of current-driven domain wall motion by a factor of 10. We also find that the exchange bias remains stable under external fields up to 15 kOe and nanosecond-long current pulses with current density up to 3.5 × 1012 A/m. Our results demonstrate versatile control of the domain wall motion by exchange bias, which is relevant to achieve field-free switching of the magnetization in perpendicular systems and current-driven manipulation of domain walls velocity in spintronic device

    Assessing the efficacy and impact of a personalised smoking cessation intervention among type 2 diabetic smokers: study protocol for an open-label randomised controlled trial (DISCGO-RCT).

    Few studies have assessed the efficacy of smoking cessation interventions in individuals with type 2 diabetes, but interventions adapted to the specific needs of this population are warranted. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a smoking cessation intervention in a population of smokers with type 2 diabetes and to measure the metabolic impact of smoking cessation. The study is an open-label, randomised control trial. Participants recruited from a sanitary region of Switzerland will be randomly allocated to either the intervention or the control arm. The intervention group will have four individual counselling sessions over 12 weeks. Trained research nurses will conduct the behavioural intervention, using motivational interviews and addressing diabetes and gender specificities. The control group will have one short counselling session at baseline and will be given written information on smoking cessation. Both groups will have a follow-up visit at 26 and 52 weeks. Demographic and medical data will be collected at baseline and follow-up, along with blood and urine samples. The primary study outcome is continuous smoking abstinence validated by expired-air carbon monoxide from week 12 to week 52. Secondary study outcomes are continuous and 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at 12 and 26 weeks; change in motivation to quit and cigarette consumption; and change in glycosylated haemoglobin levels, body weight, waist circumference and renal function after smoking cessation. In a subsample of 80 participants, change in stool microbiota from baseline will be measured at 3, 8 and 26 weeks after smoking cessation. Ethical approval has been obtained by the competent ethics committee (Commission cantonale d'éthique de la recherche sur l'être humain, CER-VD 2017-00812).     Goldstinos, Supercurrents and Metastable SUSY Breaking in N=2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

    We construct an N=2 supersymmetric generalization of the N=1 supercurrent formalism of Komargodski and Seiberg (KS) and use it to show that N=2 theories with linear superconformal anomalies cannot break SUSY under certain broad assumptions.
