Challenges of nematode control in ruminants : focus on Latin America
AbstractGastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats) are ubiquitous and can cause severe injuries to infected animals and significant losses in farming revenues. GIN are able to survive severe environmental and host conditions, but mankind has developed a number of ingenious methods for parasite control. The commerce and use of modern anthelmintic drugs with a broad spectrum of activity has been a solid tool for nearly 40 years, however the continuous use of these drugs, has led to the selection of populations of drug-resistant worms worldwide. At present, the ever-growing agricultural systems in Latin America are facing many challenges and cannot rely on the far-reaching objective of parasitic elimination from the host or the environment. The lack of extensive programs for monitoring drug resistance exacerbates the negative consequences of reduced efficacy, which is evident in some areas with the increase in mortality rate even after treatment. Experts agree that new schemes of parasitic control are needed and should be based on the strategy of targeted selective treatment where affected hosts are identified and treated accordingly. In this article, we will focus our discussion on the challenges for the control of GIN in Latin America by 2020 imposed by reduced drug efficacy. We will evaluate phenotypic and molecular markers, methods for single-animal evaluation, and the implementation of schemes for anthelmintic treatment that address parasites in refugia
Spatial distribution of vacancy defects in GaP wafers
Cathodoluminescencescanning electron microscopy and positron annihilation techniques have been used to investigate the distribution of defects in GaP wafers. The results show the existence of a gradient of the concentration of vacancy‐type defects along the wafer diameter, which causes inhomogeneity in the emission. Histopathological lesions in central nervous system of goats poisoned by Ipomoea carnea
Ipomoea carnea var. fistulosa (Convolvulaceae) is a perenne poisonous plant, found throughout the Argentine Northeastern. The intoxication produces a lysosomal storage disease in goats, sheep and cattle. Five goats were fed with 50 g/kgBW/day of fresh leaves, flowers and stems of I. carnea, during 43–60 days. Hirsute coat, depression, difficulty to stand up, ataxia, hypermetria, wide–based stance, incoordination of muscular movements, intense tremors, spastic paresis, abnormal postural reactions, nystagmus, hyperreflexia, hypersensitivity to sound, head tilting and loss of equilibrium were observed in all treated animals. The histopathologic study revealed the presence of cytoplasmatic vacuolation mainly in medulla oblongata and cerebellum. Control animals did not show any alterations. We conclude that this poisoning causes central nervous system damage, being Purkinje cells the most severely affected

parameter region where two periodic orbits co-exist near a boundary crisis, but

The economic status of older people’s households in urban and rural settings in Peru, Mexico and China: a 10/66 INDEP study cross-sectional survey
Few data are available from middle income countries regarding economic circumstances of households in which older people live. Many such settings have experienced rapid demographic, social and economic change, alongside increasing pension coverage. Population-based household surveys in rural and urban catchment areas in Peru, Mexico and China. Participating households were selected from all households with older residents. Descriptive analyses were weighted back for sampling fractions and non-response. Household income and consumption were estimated from a household key informant interview. 877 Household interviews (3177 residents). Response rate 68 %. Household income and consumption correlated plausibly with other economic wellbeing indicators. Household Incomes varied considerably within and between sites. While multigenerational households were the norm, older resident’s incomes accounted for a high proportion of household income, and older people were particularly likely to pool income. Differences in the coverage and value of pensions were a major source of variation in household income among sites. There was a small, consistent inverse association between household pension income and labour force participation of younger adult co-residents. The effect of pension income on older adults’ labour force participation was less clear-cut. Historical linkage of social protection to formal employment may have contributed to profound late-life socioeconomic inequalities. Strategies to formalise the informal economy, alongside increases in the coverage and value of non-contributory pensions and transfers would help to address this problem
The GROUSE project II: Detection of the Ks-band secondary eclipse of exoplanet HAT-P-1b
Context: Only recently it has become possible to measure the thermal emission
from hot-Jupiters at near-Infrared wavelengths using ground-based telescopes,
by secondary eclipse observations. This allows the planet flux to be probed
around the peak of its spectral energy distribution, which is vital for the
understanding of its energy budget. Aims: The aim of the reported work is to
measure the eclipse depth of the planet HAT-P-1b at 2.2micron. This planet is
an interesting case, since the amount of stellar irradiation it receives falls
in between that of the two best studied systems (HD209458 and HD189733), and it
has been suggested to have a weak thermal inversion layer. Methods: We have
used the LIRIS instrument on the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) to observe
the secondary eclipse of HATP-1b in the Ks-band, as part of our Ground-based
secondary eclipse (GROUSE) project. The observations were done in staring mode,
while significantly defocusing the telescope to avoid saturation on the K=8.4
star. With an average cadence of 2.5 seconds, we collected 6520 frames during
one night. Results: The eclipse is detected at the 4sigma level, the measured
depth being 0.109+/-0.025%. The uncertainties are dominated by residual
systematic effects, as estimated from different reduction/analysis procedures.
The measured depth corresponds to a brightness temperature of 2136+150-170K.
This brightness temperature is significantly higher than those derived from
longer wavelengths, making it difficult to fit all available data points with a
plausible atmospheric model. However, it may be that we underestimate the true
uncertainties of our measurements, since it is notoriously difficult to assign
precise statistical significance to a result when systematic effects are
