    New string vacua from twistor spaces

    We find a new family of AdS_4 vacua in IIA string theory. The internal space is topologically either the complex projective space CP^3 or the "flag manifold" SU(3)/(U(1)xU(1)), but the metric is in general neither Einstein nor Kaehler. All known moduli are stabilized by fluxes, without using quantum effects or orientifold planes. The analysis is completely ten--dimensional and does not rely on assumptions about Kaluza--Klein reduction.Comment: 19 pages. v3: published version, further minor correction

    Superconductivity without Fe or Ni in the phosphides BaIr2P2 and BaRh2P2

    Heat capacity, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm bulk superconductivity in single crystals of BaIr2_2P2_2 (Tc_c=2.1K) and BaRh2_2P2_2 (Tc_c = 1.0 K). These compounds form in the ThCr2_2Si2_2 (122) structure so they are isostructural to both the Ni and Fe pnictides but not isoelectronic to either of them. This illustrates the importance of structure for the occurrence of superconductivity in the 122 pnictides. Additionally, a comparison between these and other ternary phosphide superconductors suggests that the lack of interlayer PPP-P bonding favors superconductivity. These stoichiometric and ambient pressure superconductors offer an ideal playground to investigate the role of structure for the mechanism of superconductivity in the absence of magnetism.Comment: Published in Phys Rev B: Rapid Communication

    Ground State Conditions Induce Rapid Reorganization of Core Pluripotency Factor Binding before Global Epigenetic Reprogramming

    SummaryMouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) cultured under serum/LIF conditions exhibit heterogeneous expression of pluripotency-associated factors that can be overcome by two inhibitors (2i) of the MEK and GSK3 pathways. Several studies have shown that the “ground state” induced by 2i is characterized by global hypomethylation and specific transcriptional profiles, but little is known about the contributing effectors. Here we show that 2i conditions rapidly alter the global binding landscape of OCT4, SOX2, and NANOG. The dynamic binding influences enhancer activity and shows enrichment for regulators linked to Wnt and Erk signaling. Epigenomic characterization provided limited insights to the immediate transcriptional dynamics, suggesting that these are likely more secondary effects. Likewise, loss of the PRC2 component EED to prevent H3K27me3 deposition had minimal effect on the transcriptome, implying that it is largely dispensable for continued repression of bivalent genes and de novo silencing in 2i

    A Bayesian Model for Spatial Disease Prevalence Data

    The analysis of the geographical distribution of disease on the scale of geographic areas such as administrative boundaries plays an important role in veterinary epidemiology. Prevalence estimates of wildlife population surveys are often based on regional count data generated by sampling animals shot by hunters. The observed disease rate per spatial unit is not a useful estimate of the underlying disease prevalence due to different sample sizes and spatial dependencies between neighbouring areas. Therefore, it is necessary to account for extra-sample variation and and spatial correlation in the data to produce more accurate maps of disease incidence. For this purpose a hierarchical Bayesian model in which structured and un-structured overdispersion is modelled explicitly in terms of spatial and non-spatial components was implemented by Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The model was empirically compared with the results of the non-spatial beta-binomial model using surveillance data of Pseudorabies virus infections of wildboars in the Federal State of Brandenburg, Germany

    Nonnegatively curved homogeneous metrics obtained by scaling fibers of submersions

    We consider invariant Riemannian metrics on compact homogeneous spaces G/H where an intermediate subgroup K between G and H exists, so that the homogeneous space G/H is the total space of a Riemannian submersion. We study the question as to whether enlarging the fibers of the submersion by a constant scaling factor retains the nonnegative curvature in the case that the deformation starts at a normal homogeneous metric. We classify triples of groups (H,K,G) where nonnegative curvature is maintained for small deformations, using a criterion proved by Schwachh\"ofer and Tapp. We obtain a complete classification in case the subgroup H has full rank and an almost complete classification in the case of regular subgroups.Comment: 23 pages; minor revisions, to appear in Geometriae Dedicat

    The Cost of Defensive Medicine in the United States

    In this paper we present the costs of defensive medicine in thirty-five clinical specialties to determine whether malpractice liability reforms would greatly reduce health care costs. Defensive medicine includes tests and procedures ordered by physicians principally to reduce perceived threats of medical malpractice liability. The practice is commonly assumed to increase health care costs. The results of studies of the costs of defensive medicine have been inconsistent. We found that estimated savings resulting from a 10 percent decline in medical malpractice premiums would be less than 1 percent of total medical care costs in every specialty. These savings are lower than most previous estimates, and they suggest that the presumed impact of tort reform on health care costs may be overstated

    On the terms violating the custodial symmetry in multi-Higgs-doublet models

    We prove that a generic multi-Higgs-doublet model (NHDM) generally must contain terms in the potential that violate the custodial symmetry. This is done by showing that the O(4) violating terms of the NHDM potential cannot be excluded by imposing a symmetry on the NHDM Lagrangian. Hence we expect higher-order corrections to necessarily introduce such terms. We also note, in the case of custodially symmetric Higgs-quark couplings, that vacuum alignment will lead to up-down mass degeneration; this is not true if the vacua are not aligned.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure.
