    Isospin breaking and f0(980)f_0(980)-a0(980)a_0(980) mixing in the η(1405)→π0f0(980)\eta(1405) \to \pi^{0} f_0(980) reaction

    We make a theoretical study of the η(1405)→π0f0(980)\eta(1405) \to \pi^{0} f_0(980) and η(1405)→π0a0(980)\eta(1405) \to \pi^{0} a_0(980) reactions with an aim to determine the isospin violation and the mixing of the f0(980)f_0(980) and a0(980)a_0(980) resonances. We make use of the chiral unitary approach where these two resonances appear as composite states of two mesons, dynamically generated by the meson-meson interaction provided by chiral Lagrangians. We obtain a very narrow shape for the f0(980)f_0(980) production in agreement with a BES experiment. As to the amount of isospin violation, or f0(980)f_0(980) and a0(980)a_0(980) mixing, assuming constant vertices for the primary η(1405)→π0KKˉ\eta(1405)\rightarrow \pi^{0}K\bar{K} and η(1405)→π0π0η\eta(1405)\rightarrow \pi^{0}\pi^{0}\eta production, we find results which are much smaller than found in the recent experimental BES paper, but consistent with results found in two other related BES experiments. We have tried to understand this anomaly by assuming an I=1 mixture in the η(1405)\eta(1405) wave function, but this leads to a much bigger width of the f0(980)f_0(980) mass distribution than observed experimentally. The problem is solved by using the primary production driven by ηâ€Č→K∗Kˉ\eta' \to K^* \bar K followed by K∗→KπK^* \to K \pi, which induces an extra singularity in the loop functions needed to produce the f0(980)f_0(980) and a0(980)a_0(980) resonances. Improving upon earlier work along the same lines, and using the chiral unitary approach, we can now predict absolute values for the ratio Γ(π0,π+π−)/Γ(π0,π0η)\Gamma(\pi^0, \pi^+ \pi^-)/\Gamma(\pi^0, \pi^0 \eta) which are in fair agreement with experiment. We also show that the same results hold if we had the η(1475)\eta(1475) resonance or a mixture of these two states, as seems to be the case in the BES experiment

    Linear optical implementation of a single mode quantum filter and generation of multi-photon polarization entangled state

    We propose a scheme to implement a single-mode quantum filter, which selectively eliminates the one-photon state in a quantum state α∣0>+ÎČ∣1>+γ∣2>\alpha|0>+\beta|1>+\gamma|2>. The vacuum state and the two photon state are transmitted without any change. This scheme requires single-photon sources, linear optical elements and photon detectors. Furthermore we demonstrate, how this filter can be used to realize a two-qubit projective measurement and to generate multi-photon polarization entangled states.Comment: revision submitted to PR

    Developing Sustainable Relationships through Public Private People Partnership (4P) Projects

    Conference Theme: Global Challenges in Construction IndustryPublic Private Partnership (PPP) are sometimes used to procure public infrastructure, if deemed useful in mobilising private finance and expertise for generating innovations and enhanced ‘value’. However, when delivering desired ‘value’ to specific end-users, we should not neglect ‘overall value’ for the sustainable development of the parent community/society. To address such holistic issues in suitable broader-based projects, wider-ranging ‘Public Private People Partnership’ (4P) arrangements are proposed to invite and integrate contributions from societal stakeholders through relevant bodies, e.g. social enterprises, NGOs, academia and professional institutions. Selecting and integrating such stakeholders in a properly structured 4P procurement and operational framework can help formulate more widely acceptable and sustainable designs and mobilise more resources for procurement, construction, maintenance and operation of built assets. This will also help to address grass roots aspirations and concerns earlier, rather than try to resolve conflicts later. However, a major barrier to involving more stakeholders in already complex projects arises in managing their inputs, and relationships, while optimising outputs. Based on literature review and structured interviews, this paper presents pros and cons of using 4P in selected scenarios such as post-disaster reconstruction. Initial findings confirm that a 4P approach requires superior relationship management. This paper also draws on another study that highlighted the often neglected importance of relationship management in ‘traditional’ PPP projects. Combining these findings, a case is made for improving relationship management by mobilising the additional P (‘people’) to appropriate extents in selected PPP projects, so as to identify, prioritise and harmonise diverse stakeholder objectives and target optimal ‘overall value’ with sustainable relationships aimed at common goals.published_or_final_versio

    Fast and robust road sign detection in driver assistance systems

Road signs possess a number of unique visual qualities in images due to their specific colors and symmetric shapes. In this paper, road signs are detected by a two-level hierarchical framework that considers both color and shape of the signs. To address the problem of low image contrast, we propose a new color visual saliency segmentation algorithm, which uses the ratios of enhanced and normalized color values to capture color information. To improve computation efficiency and reduce false alarm rate, we modify the fast radial symmetry transform (RST) algorithm, and propose to use an edge pairwise voting scheme to group feature points based on their underlying symmetry in the candidate regions. Experimental results on several benchmarking datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over the state-of-the-arts on both efficiency and robustness
