QCD condensates and holographic Wilson loops for asymptotically AdS spaces
The minimization of the Nambu-Goto action for a surface whose contour defines
a circular Wilson loop of radius a placed at a finite value of the coordinate
orthogonal to the boundary is considered. This is done for asymptotically AdS
spaces. The condensates of even dimension through are calculated in
terms of the coefficient of in the expansion of the on-shell subtracted
Nambu-Goto action for small
The subtraction employed is such that it presents no conflict with conformal
invariance in the AdS case and need not introduce an additional infrared scale
for the case of confining geometries. It is shown that the UV value of the
condensates is universal in the sense that they only depends on the first

A Compact Detector for Flexible Partial Discharge Monitoring of 10-kV Overhead Covered Conductor Lines
The availability of accurate and cost-effective solutions for the real-time monitoring of overhead covered conductors (CC) is now becoming an important tool for the reliability and condition assessments of this class of electrical lines. This is even more crucial due to the possibly large number of conductors and the wide geographical spread of the electrical network. This letter proposes a smart and compact detector for partial discharge (PD) based monitoring, matching the above needs and offering a flexible and cost-effective solution with some important features, including a non-invasive sensing, a field energy harvesting function, and a low-power working operation. The detector has been designed and implemented, proving its effectiveness on real cases involving PD-affected 10 kV CC lines
From modular invariants to graphs: the modular splitting method
We start with a given modular invariant M of a two dimensional su(n)_k
conformal field theory (CFT) and present a general method for solving the
Ocneanu modular splitting equation and then determine, in a step-by-step
explicit construction, 1) the generalized partition functions corresponding to
the introduction of boundary conditions and defect lines; 2) the quantum
symmetries of the higher ADE graph G associated to the initial modular
invariant M. Notice that one does not suppose here that the graph G is already
known, since it appears as a by-product of the calculations. We analyze several

The beta function and equation of state for QCD with two flavors of quarks
We measure the pressure and energy density of two flavor QCD in a wide range
of quark masses and temperatures. The pressure is obtained from an integral
over the average plaquette or psi-bar-psi. We measure the QCD beta function,
including the anomalous dimension of the quark mass, in new Monte Carlo
simulations and from results in the literature. We use it to find the
interaction measure, E-3p, yielding non-perturbative values for both the energy

Perturbative Thermodynamics of Lattice QCD with Chiral-Invariant Four-Fermion Interactions
Lattice QCD with additional chiral-invariant four-fermion interactions is
studied at nonzero temperature. Staggered Kogut-Susskind quarks are used. The
four-fermion interactions are implemented by introducing bosonic auxiliary
fields. A mean field treatment of the auxiliary fields is used to calculate the
model's asymptotic scale parameter and perturbative thermodynamics, including
the one-loop gluonic contributions to the energy, entropy, and pressure. In
this approach the calculations reduce to those of ordinary lattice QCD with
massive quarks. Hence, the previous calculations of these quantities in lattice

Impact of neurodegenerative diseases on human adult hippocampal neurogenesis
Disrupted hippocampal performance underlies psychiatric comorbidities and cognitive impairments in patients with neurodegenerative disorders. To understand the contribution of adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia, we studied postmortem human samples. We found that adult-born dentate granule cells showed abnormal morphological development and changes in the expression of differentiation markers. The ratio of quiescent to proliferating hippocampal neural stem cells shifted, and the homeostasis of the neurogenic niche was altered. Aging and neurodegenerative diseases reduced the phagocytic capacity of microglia, triggered astrogliosis, and altered the microvasculature of the dentate gyrus. Thus, enhanced vulnerability of AHN to neurodegeneration might underlie hippocampal dysfunction during physiological and pathological aging in humans.Fil: Terreros Roncal, J.. KASCADE-Grande Limits on the Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Flux between 100 TeV and 1 EeV
KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande were multi-detector installations to measure
individual air showers of cosmic rays at ultra-high energy. Based on data sets
measured by KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande, 90% C.L. upper limits to the flux of
gamma-rays in the primary cosmic ray flux are determined in an energy range of
eV. The analysis is performed by selecting air showers
with a low muon content as expected for gamma-ray-induced showers compared to
air showers induced by energetic nuclei. The best upper limit of the fraction
of gamma-rays to the total cosmic ray flux is obtained at eV with . Translated to an absolute gamma-ray
flux this sets constraints on some fundamental astrophysical models, such as
