    Mechanism of margination in confined flows of blood and other multicomponent suspensions

    Flowing blood displays a phenomenon called margination, in which leukocytes and platelets are preferentially found near blood vessel walls, while erythrocytes are depleted from these regions. Here margination is investigated using direct hydrodynamic simulations of a binary suspension of stiff (s) and floppy (f) capsules, as well as a stochastic model that incorporates the key particle transport mechanisms in suspensions -- wall-induced hydrodynamic migration and shear-induced pair collisions. The stochastic model allows the relative importance of these two mechanisms to be directly evaluated and thereby indicates that margination, at least in the dilute case, is largely due to the differential dynamics of homogeneous (e.g. s-s) and heterogeneous (s-f) collisionsComment: 5 Pages, 4 figure

    Profile blunting and flow blockage in a yield stress fluid: A molecular dynamics study

    The flow of a simple glass forming system (a 80:20 binary Lennard-Jones mixture) through a planar channel is studied via molecular dynamics simulations. The flow is driven by an external body force similar to gravity. Previous studies show that the model exhibits both a static [Varnik et al. J. Chem. Phys. 120, 2788 (2004)] and a dynamic [F. Varnik and O. Henrich Phys. Rev. B 73, 174209 (2006)] yield stress in the glassy phase. \blue{These observations are corroborated by the present work, where we investigate how the presence of a yield stress may affect the system behavior in a Poiseuille-type flow geometry.} In particular, we observe a blunted velocity profile across the channel: A relatively wide region in the channel center flows with a constant velocity (zero shear rate) followed by a non linear change of the shear rate as the walls are approached. The observed velocity gradients are compared to those obtained from the knowledge of the shear stress across the channel and the flow-curves (stress versus shear rate), the latter being determined in our previous simulations of homogeneous shear flow. Furthermore, using the value of the (dynamic) yield stress known from previous simulations, we estimate the threshold body force for a complete arrest of the flow. Indeed, a blockage is observed as the imposed force falls below this threshold value. Small but finite shear rates are observed at stresses above the dynamic but below the static yield stress. We discuss the possible role of the \blue{stick-slip like motion} for this observation.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

    Management options for restoring estuarine dynamics and implications for ecosystems: a quantitative approach for the Southwest Delta in the Netherlands

    The Delta Works, a series of dams and barriers constructed in the 1960's–1980's changed the estuarine landscape of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta (SW Netherlands) into more stagnant and disengaged freshwater, brackish water or saltwater lakes. The remaining tidal systems were adapted by building a storm surge barrier in the Oosterschelde and dike reinforcement works along the Westerschelde. The Delta Works brought protection against flooding, but at the same time resulted in environmental and socio-economic problems, such as degradation of ecological quality and ecosystem functioning, disruption of fish migration routes, water and sediment quality problems.In this study we explore in an integrated, quantitative way the consequences of a number of management options for the Southwest Delta and their implications for the occurrence and distribution of aquatic and estuarine habitats, considering the mutual coherence between the water basins. Five scenarios were evaluated using a 1D hydraulic, water quality and primary production numerical model and GIS habitat mapping. Scenarios vary from small-scale interventions, such as changes in day-to-day management of hydraulic infrastructures or creation of small inlets in dams, feasible in the short term, to restoration of an open delta by removing dams and barriers, as a long term potential. We evaluate the outcomes in relation to the restoration of estuarine dynamics, as this is in policy plans proposed as a generic solution for the current ecological and environmental problems. Net water flow rates show more complex patterns when connectivity between water basins is increased and when sluice management is less strict. Estuarine transition zones and fish migration routes are partly restored, but only fully develop when basins are in open connection with each other. Area of intertidal habitats, tidal flats and tidal marshes, increases in each scenario, ranging between 7 and 83%, 1–56%, and 8–100% respectively, depending on scenario. Large scale infrastructural adaptations are needed to restore estuarine dynamics at large scale.The use of a 1D numerical model allowed to quantify the effect of different management measures for all water basins simultaneously, but also has its limitations. The model does not resolve more complex processes such as vertical mixing and morphodynamic changes. This requires expert judgment and more detailed 3D modelling

    Quality of life after infrainguinal bypass grafting surgery

    AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this study was to compare quality of life in patients with and without various ischemic complications after infrainguinal bypass grafting surgery for occlusive vascular disease. Methods: A sample of patients (n = 746) randomized in the Dutch BOA study (n = 2645), a multicenter trial that compared the effectiveness of oral anticoagulant therapy with aspirin in the prevention of infrainguinal bypass graft occlusions, was entered in this study. On the basis of clinical outcomes of the trial, the patients were grouped as follows: patients with patent grafts (n = 409); patients with nontreated graft occlusions, subdivided into an asymptomatic group (n = 32) and a symptomatic group (n = 65); patients with subsequent revascularizations (n = 194); patients with amputations (n = 36); and patients with failed secondary revascularizations followed by secondary amputation (n = 38). In case an outcome event occurred, the patients were regrouped accordingly. Every half year, the patients completed a Short Form–36 and a EuroQol questionnaire. A multilevel model was used for repeated measure analysis. Results:The mean follow-up time was 21 months. The quality of life in patients with nontreated asymptomatic occlusions was roughly similar to the quality of life in patients with patent grafts. Patients with symptomatic nontreated occlusions had the lowest outcome with regard to pain as compared with the other groups. Furthermore, physical and social functioning was lower for these patients than for patients with patent grafts. Revascularizations, successful or not, negatively affected pain, social functioning, and physical and emotional role. After successful revascularization, some improvement was observed in pain, physical and social functioning, and general and mental health as compared with the group with nontreated symptomatic occlusions. Amputation deteriorated physical functioning strikingly, especially after failed secondary revascularization. These patients also had the lowest scores of all the groups in the dimensions of social functioning, physical and emotional role, and mental health. EuroQol score showed deterioration of quality of life after all events, except for asymptomatic occlusions. The same patterns emerged if we stratified our analysis according to the indication for the initial operation: claudication or limb salvage. Quality of life was constant over time in all the groups in the observed period. Conclusion: Quality of life in patients with asymptomatic occluded grafts is similar to quality of life in patients with patent grafts. Revascularization of symptomatic occluded grafts improves quality of life to a certain extent. Amputation, in particular after failed secondary revascularization, seemed to be the lowest possible outcome. The results of the Short Form-36 and EuroQol measurements were in line with the clinical expectations. The association of disease severity with scores on the instruments supports the construct validity of these outcome measures for an objective assessment of quality of life in controlled studies.     Membranous glomerulonephritis in the mouse. Glomerulonephritis was induced in C57.B110 mice by a single injection of rabbit IgG against homologous, pronase-digested, renal tubular antigens. The heterologous phase was characterized by a transient increase of glomerular permeability with fixation of rabbit IgG to the capillary walls, in a linear or fine-granular pattern, and to the brush borders of the proximal tubuli. The autologous phase was marked by the immune response to the injected protein, during which subepithelial immune deposits, consisting of mouse IgG1, rabbit IgG, and mouse C3 developed. Small amounts were still present at 1 year after the injection of antiserum. The antibody response of the mice correlated with the development and resolution of the deposits. None of the mice developed a nephrotic syndrome. Control mice treated with normal rabbit IgG did not show immune deposits in their kidneys at any stage despite a comparable antibody response to rabbit IgG. Immunoelectronmicroscopy showed that the rabbit antibodies fixed directly to an antigen in the cell membrane of the glomerular visceral epithelium. It seems, therefore, likely that in situ formation of subepithelial immune complexes occurred in the autologous phase by fixation of mouse immunoglobulins to rabbit IgG already present in the glomerular wall.Glomérulonéphrite extra-membraneuse chez la souris. Une glomérulonéphrite a été induite chez des souris C57.B110 par une injection unique d'IgG de lapin contre des antigènes tubulaires rénaux homologues, digérés par de la pronase. La phase hétérologue était caractérisée par une augmentation transitoire de la perméabilité glomérulaire avec fixation d'IgG de lapin aux parois capillaires, d'une façon linéaire ou finement granuleuse, et aux bordures en brosse des tubules proximaux. La phase autologue était marquée par la réponse immune à la protéine injectée, pendant laquelle des dépôts immuns sous-épithéliaux, consistant en de l'IgG1 de souris, de l'IgG de lapin et du C3 de souris, se sont développés. Il en restait encore de faibles quantités 1 an après l'injection de l'antisérum. La réponse anticorps des souris était corrélée avec le développement et la disparition des dépôts. Aucune des souris n'a développé de syndrome néphrotique. Les souris contrôles traitées avec de l'IgG de lapin normal n'ont pas eu de dépôts immuns dans le rein à aucun stade, malgré une réponse anticorps aux IgG de lapin comparable. La microscopie immuno-électronique a montré que les anticorps de lapin se fixaient directement à un antigène situé sur la membrane des cellules de l'épithélium viscéral glomérulaire. Il semble donc probable que la formation in situ de complexes immuns sous-épithéliaux est survenue à la phase autologue par fixation d'immunoglobulines de souris à de l'IgG de lapin déjà présente dans la paroi glomérulaire

    Sustainable scenarios for the Southwest Delta based on Building with Nature strategies

    The concept of Building with Nature can be applied on a range of spatial and temporal scales: from improving the ecological value of a stretch of dyke to influencing an entire delta, and from anticipating to unwanted side effects of hard structures on the scale of years, to a multidecadal approach to dynamically reinforce the entire Dutch coast. The question therefore arose: would it be possible to design scenarios for the long-term future of the ZW Delta which make use of Building with Nature techniques on a large scale and what would this learn for possible pathways to a sustainable future

    Retrieval of 3D polygonal objects based on multiresolution signatures

    In this paper we present a method for retrieving 3D polygonal objects by using two sets of multiresolution signatures. Both sets are based on the progressive elimination of object's details by iterative processing of the 3D meshes. The first set, with five parameters, is based on mesh smoothing. This mainly affects an object's surface. The second set, with three parameters, is based on difference volumes after successive mesh erosions and dilations. Characteristic feature vectors are constructed by combining the features at three mesh resolutions of each object. In addition to being invariant to mesh resolution, the feature vectors are invariant to translation, rotation and size of the objects. The method was tested on a set of 40 complex objects with mesh resolutions different from those used in constructing the feature vectors. By using all eight features, the average ranking rate obtained was 1.075: 37 objects were ranked first and only 3 objects were ranked second. Additional tests were carried out to determine the significance of individual features and all combinations. The same ranking rate of 1.075 can be obtained by using some combinations of only three features. © 2011 Springer-Verlag
