    A vocabulary-independent generation framework for DBpedia and beyond

    The dbpedia Extraction Framework, the generation framework behind one of the Linked Open Data cloud’s central hubs, has limitations which lead to quality issues with the dbpedia dataset. Therefore, we provide a new take on its Extraction Framework that allows for a sustainable and general-purpose Linked Data generation framework by adapting a semantic-driven approach. The proposed approach decouples, in a declarative manner, the extraction, transformation, and mapping rules execution. This way, among others, interchanging different schema annotations is supported, instead of being coupled to a certain ontology as it is now, because the dbpedia Extraction Framework allows only generating a certain dataset with a single semantic representation. In this paper, we shed more light to the added value that this aspect brings. We provide an extracted dbpedia dataset using a different vocabulary, and give users the opportunity to generate a new dbpedia dataset using a custom combination of vocabularies

    Applying causality principles to the axiomatization of probabilistic cellular automata

    Cellular automata (CA) consist of an array of identical cells, each of which may take one of a finite number of possible states. The entire array evolves in discrete time steps by iterating a global evolution G. Further, this global evolution G is required to be shift-invariant (it acts the same everywhere) and causal (information cannot be transmitted faster than some fixed number of cells per time step). At least in the classical, reversible and quantum cases, these two top-down axiomatic conditions are sufficient to entail more bottom-up, operational descriptions of G. We investigate whether the same is true in the probabilistic case.     Interpretations of Individualistic and Collectivistic Drinking Messages in Beer Commercials by Teenagers from Five European Countries

    The study is a qualitative investigation into European teenagers’ meaning-making of beer commercials with individualistic and collectivistic drinking messages. The subjects were teenagers (aged 13–16) from Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. Eight (8) focus group interviews were conducted in each country, with a total of 267 participants. Beer commercials acted as stimuli for the group discussions. The adolescents’ speech in these discussions was analysed for the perceived positive outcomes of drinking alcohol and for perceptions of competence attached to drinking. The speech of the participants is juxtaposed to a semiotic reading of the commercials and differences between the groups are explained by cultural differences. Les discours des adolescents dans ces discussions ont été analysés pour les résultats positifs perçus de la consommation d'alcool et la perception des compétences associées à l'alcoolisme.     Atlas Data-Challenge 1 on NorduGrid

    The first LHC application ever to be executed in a computational Grid environment is the so-called ATLAS Data-Challenge 1, more specifically, the part assigned to the Scandinavian members of the ATLAS Collaboration. Taking advantage of the NorduGrid testbed and tools, physicists from Denmark, Norway and Sweden were able to participate in the overall exercise starting in July 2002 and continuing through the rest of 2002 and the first part of 2003 using solely the NorduGrid environment. This allowed to distribute input data over a wide area, and rely on the NorduGrid resource discovery mechanism to find an optimal cluster for job submission.     Glucose metabolism and oscillatory behavior of pancreatic islets

    A variety of oscillations are observed in pancreatic islets.We establish a model, incorporating two oscillatory systems of different time scales: One is the well-known bursting model in pancreatic beta-cells and the other is the glucose-insulin feedback model which considers direct and indirect feedback of secreted insulin. These two are coupled to interact with each other in the combined model, and two basic assumptions are made on the basis of biological observations: The conductance g_{K(ATP)} for the ATP-dependent potassium current is a decreasing function of the glucose concentration whereas the insulin secretion rate is given by a function of the intracellular calcium concentration. Obtained via extensive numerical simulations are complex oscillations including clusters of bursts, slow and fast calcium oscillations, and so on. We also consider how the intracellular glucose concentration depends upon the extracellular glucose concentration, and examine the inhibitory effects of insulin.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure

    Origin of the ϕ ∼ ±9° peaks in YBa2Cu3O7−δ films grown on cubic zirconia substrates

    The c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−δ films grown on (001) yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) substrates often contain domains whose in-plane alignment is rotated approximately 9° from the cube-on-cube epitaxial relationship, in addition to the more commonly observed 0° and 45° in-plane rotations. We have investigated the origin of this ∼9° orientation using in situ electron diffraction during growth and ex situ 4-circle x-ray diffraction. Our results indicate that the ∼9° orientation provides the most favorable lattice match between the interfacial (110)-oriented BaZrO3 epitaxial reaction layer, which forms between YBa2Cu3O7−δ and the YSZ substrate. If epitaxy occurs directly between YBa2Cu3O7−δ and the YSZ substrate, i.e., before the BaZrO3 epitaxial reaction layer is formed, the 0° and 45° domains have the most favorable lattice match. However, growth conditions that favor the formation of the BaZrO3 reaction layer prior to the nucleation of YBa2Cu3O7−δ lead to an increase in ∼9° domains. The observed phenomenon, which results from epitaxial alignment between the diagonal of a square surface net and the diagonal of a rectangular surface net, is a general method for producing in-plane misorientations, and has also been observed for the heteroepitaxial growth of other materials, including (Ba, K)BiO3/LaAlO3. The YBa2Cu3O7−δ/YSZ case involves epitaxial alignment between [111]BaZrO3 and [110]YSZ, resulting in an expected in-plane rotation of 11.3° to 9.7° for fully commensurate and for fully relaxed (110)BaZrO3 on (001)YSZ, respectivel

    Phonons and elasticity of cementite through the Curie temperature

    Phonon partial densities of states (pDOS) of ^(57)Fe_3 C were measured from cryogenic temperatures through the Curie transition at 460 K using nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The cementite pDOS reveal that low-energy acoustic phonons shift to higher energies (stiffen) with temperature before the magnetic transition. This unexpected stiffening suggests strongly nonharmonic vibrational behavior that impacts the thermodynamics and elastic properties of cementite. Density functional theory calculations reproduced the anomalous stiffening observed experimentally in cementite by accounting for phonon-phonon interactions at finite temperatures. The calculations show that the low-energy acoustic phonon branches with polarizations along the [010] direction are largely responsible for the anomalous thermal stiffening. The effect was further localized to the motions of the Fe_(II) site within the orthorhombic structure, which participates disproportionately in the anomalous phonon stiffening

Conclusions: In the first of a series of follow-up reports to the original paper, several members of the original task force with specific expertise provided a more in-depth analysis of the five identified priorities directly related to basic/translational science. This analysis expounds on what is known about the question and what was identified as priorities for ongoing research. It is hoped that this analysis will aid the development of future research initiatives
