Control of atom-photon interactions with shaped quantum electron wavepackets
Photon emission from atoms and free electrons underlie a wealth of
fundamental science and technological innovations. We present a regime where
atom-photon and electron-photon interactions interfere with each other,
resulting in substantial changes in the spontaneous emission rate compared to
the sum of each interaction considered in isolation. We highlight the critical
role played by quantum electron wavepackets, and how the emission can be
tailored via the electron waveshape, as well as the atomic population and
coherence. Our findings reveal that atom-photon and electron-photon
interactions cannot be considered in isolation even when higher-order
contributions involving all three bodies (atom, photon and free electron) are
negligible. Our findings pave the way to more precise control over photon
emission processes and related diagnostics.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
A holistic approach to the evaluation of sustainable housing
Residential housing is often evaluated against single or at best a limited number of similar criteria. These include quantifiable indicators such as energy use and its associated greenhouse gas emissions. It might also include material consumption from an embodied energy or resource use perspective. Social factors or qualitative indicators may be evaluated but are rarely placed or juxtaposed alongside these quantifiable indicators. A one-dimensional approach will be limiting because sustainable development includes both environmental and social factors. This paper describes the methodologies that have been developed to assess housing developments against five quite different criteria. These are: energy use, resource use, neighbourhood character, neighbourhood connectedness and diversity. In each case, high and low sustainability practice has been identified so that ranking is possible. These methodologies have then been tested by evaluating a typical precinct (approximately 400 m by 400 m) of a 1970-80s housing development in a suburb of Geelong. The rankings of the particular precinct have then been combined in a visual way to assist in the evaluation of the housing in a more holistic way. The results of this evaluation method are presented, along with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the methodologies. Preliminary Trials on juvenile Macrobrachium rosenbergii Production under modified Static 'Green water' Conditions
The methods of juvenile production of Udang Galah (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) have been documented
by several workers (ling, 1969 .. Ling and Costello, 1976 .. Fujimura 7966, 1967, 1968, 1972 .. Fujimura
and okomoto, 1970,. Sandifer etl.1976).
The methods given by these workers involve intensive hatchery management such as frequent water
change and cleaning of larval tanks to ensure good sanitation. Such a technique would involve wastage of
sea water and at the same time is labour intensive.

A quantitative study of the relationship between the oxide charge trapping over the drain extension and the off-state drain leakage current
In this letter, we report an approach to quantitative study of the relationship between the oxide charge trapping over the drain extension due to electrical stress and the off-state drain leakage current. It is found that positive charge trapping over the drain extension leads to a significant increase in the off-state drain current if the edge direct tunneling (EDT) is dominant in the drain current but in contrast, it leads to a reduction in the drain current if the band-to-band tunneling in the Si surface is dominant. A quantitative relationship between the charge trapping and the off-state drain leakage current in the EDT regime is established. From the measurement of the off-state current in the EDT regime, the charge trapping can be determined by using the approach developed in this study. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
Locating the ‘radical’ in 'Shoot the Messenger'

The final published article is available from the link below, copyright 2013 @ Edinburgh University Press.The 2006 BBC drama Shoot the Messenger is based on the psychological journey of a Black schoolteacher, Joe Pascale, accused of assaulting a Black male pupil. The allegation triggers Joe's mental breakdown which is articulated, through Joe's first-person narration, as a vindictive loathing of Black people. In turn, a range of common stereotypical characterisations and discourses based on a Black culture of hypocrisy, blame and entitlement is presented. The text is therefore laid wide open to a critique of its neo-conservatism and hegemonic narratives of Black Britishness. However, the drama's presentation of Black mental illness suggests that Shoot the Messenger may also be interpreted as a critique of social inequality and the destabilising effects of living with ethnicised social categories. Through an analysis of issues of representation, the article reclaims this controversial text as a radical drama and examines its implications for and within a critical cultural politics of ‘race’ and representation
A Preliminary Study on Induced Spawning of the Catfish Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus) in Malaysia
Ten gravid Clarias batrachus females were administered with a single dose of common carp pituitary
homogenate (CPR). Bifore injection, the eggs were light yellow and the diameter rangedfrom 0.94 mm to
1.08 mm. Ovulation occurred approximately 12 hours after the adminstration of CPR. The colour of the
eggs turned brown and the diameter rangedfrom o. 99 mm to 1.27 mm. The fertilization rates rangedfrom
10-81%. The eggs hatched after about 30-36 hours of incubation at 26°C to 28°C. The hatching
