    This study has mainly focused on the use of multinomial logistic regression in predicting employee satisfaction of the academics in Sri Lankan universities A questionnaire was used to gather data from acdemics and it is prepared to collect demographic data and eight main factors Demographic factors were analyzed with multinomial logistic regression and it resulted in three elements namely sector salary and gender Before examining the main factors in the questionnaire a reliability analysis was done Factors were analyzed with multinomial logistic regression and resulted in different models and the best model out of all is presented in this paper By comparing the models with R-squared values goodness-of-fit statistics and residuals the best model was obtained This study revealed thatfitting of the abilities and knowledge with the job ability to use the full potential in work superior behavior and freedom are significant factors in predicting employee satisfaction of academics in Sri Lankan universitie

    Prediction and assessment of the effects of mixtures of four xenoestrogens.

    The assessment of mixture effects of estrogenic agents is regarded as an issue of high priority by many governmental agencies and expert decision-making bodies all over the world. However, the few mixture studies published so far have suffered from conceptual and experimental problems and are considered to be inconclusive. Here, we report the results of assessments of two-, three- and four-component mixtures of o,p'-DDT, genistein, 4-nonylphenol, and 4-n-octylphenol, all compounds with well-documented estrogenic activity. Extensive concentration-response analyses with the single agents were carried out using a recombinant yeast screen (yeast estrogen screen, YES). Based on the activity of the single agents in the YES assay we calculated predictions of entire concentration-response curves for mixtures of our chosen test agents assuming additive combination effects. For this purpose we employed the models of concentration addition and independent action, both well-established models for the calculation of mixture effects. Experimental concentration-response analyses revealed good agreement between predicted and observed mixture effects in all cases. Our results show that the combined effect of o,p'-DDT, genistein, 4-nonylphenol, and 4-n-octylphenol in the YES assay does not deviate from expected additivity. We consider both reference models as useful tools for the assessment of combination effects of multiple mixtures of xenoestrogens

    Spectral filtering for plant production

    Both plants and animals have one general commonality in their perception of light. They both are sensitive primarily to the 400 to 700 nm wavelength portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is referred to as the visible spectrum for animals and as the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) spectrum for plants. Within this portion of the spectrum, animals perceive colors. Relatively recently it has been learned that within this same spectral range plants also demonstrate varying responses at different wavelengths, somewhat analogous to the definition of various colors at specific wavelengths. Although invisible to the human eye, portions of the electromagnetic spectrum on either side of the visible range are relatively inactive photosynthetically but have been found to influence important biological functions. These portions include the ultraviolet (UV approximately equal to 280-400 nm) and the far-red (FR approximately equal to 700-800 nm). The basic photoreceptor of plants for photosynthesis is chlorophyll. It serves to capture radiant energy which combined with carbon dioxide and water produces oxygen and assimulated carbon, used for the synthesis of cell wall polysaccarides, proteins, membrane lipids and other cellular constituents. The energy and carbon building blocks of photosynthesis sustain growth of plants. On the other hand, however, there are other photoreceptors, or pigments, that function as signal transducers to provide information that controls many physiological and morphological responses of how a plant grows. Known photomorphogenic receptors include phytochrome (the red/far-red sensor in the narrow bands of 655-665 nm and 725-735 nm ranges, respectively) and 'cryptochrome' (the hypothetical UV-B sensor in the 280-320 nm range). Since the USDA team of W. L. Butler, S. B. Hendricks, H. A. Borthwick, H. A. Siegleman and K. Norris in Beltsville, MD detected by spectroscopy, extracted and identified phytochrome as a protein in the 1950's, many other investigators have found evidence of its control functions in plants. Considerably less, however, is known about the yet non-isolated cryptochrome. The information-transferring roles of photoreceptors in plants at specific spectral ranges quite naturally stimulated plant scientists and engineers to consider physically manipulating light to achieve desired physiological and morphological characteristics. One way to manipulate light is to filter it through materials that selectively transmit portions of the sun's spectrum in and near the PAR range

    Networking the nucleus

    The nuclei of differentiating cells exhibit several fundamental principles of self-organization. They are composed of many dynamical units connected physically and functionally to each otherā€”a complex networkā€”and the different parts of the system are mutually adapted and produce a characteristic end state. A unique cell-specific signature emerges over time from complex interactions among constituent elements that delineate coordinate gene expression and chromosome topology. Each element itself consists of many interacting components, all dynamical in nature. Self-organizing systems can be simplified while retaining complex information using approaches that examine the relationship between elements, such as spatial relationships and transcriptional information. These relationships can be represented using well-defined networks. We hypothesize that during the process of differentiation, networks within the cell nucleus rewire according to simple rules, from which a higher level of order emerges. Studying the interaction within and among networks provides a useful framework for investigating the complex organization and dynamic function of the nucleus

    Characterization of Mouse Tissue Kallikrein 5

    Mouse tissue kallikreins (Klks) are members of a large, multigene family consisting of 37 genes, 26 of which can code for functional proteins. Mouse tissue kallikrein 5 (KIk5) has long been thought to be one of these functional genes, but the gene product, mK5, has not been isolated and characterized. In the present study, we prepared active recombinant mK5 using an Escherichia coli expression system, followed by column chromatography. We then determined the biochemical and enzymatic properties of purified mK5. mK5 had trypsin-like activity for Arg at the P1 position, and its activity was inhibited by typical serine protease inhibitors. mK5 degraded gelatin, fibronectin, collagen type IV, high-molecular-weight kininogen, and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3. Our data suggest that mK5 may be implicated in the process of extracellular matrix remodeling

    Clinical and psychosocial factors associated with domestic violence among men and women in Kandy, Sri Lanka

    Domestic violence (DV) is a violation of human rights with adverse intergenerational consequences on physical and mental health. Clinical and psychosocial correlates of DV have been documented internationally, but evidence from South Asia is limited, especially among men. This is a nested cross-sectional study of the control population (N = 856) of a large case-control study in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the association between clinical and psychosocial factors and experience of DV. Overall associations were examined and stratified by sex and type of abuse. Overall, 19% (95% CI 16%-21%) of the sample reported DV of any form in past year, with a similar prevalence being reported in both men (18% 95% CI 14%-22%) and women (19% 95% CI 15%-23%). Depression symptoms (adjusted OR [AOR] 3.28 95% CI 2.13-5.05), suicidal ideation (AOR 6.19 95% CI 3.67-10.45), prior diagnosis of a mental illness (AOR 3.62 95% CI 1.61-8.14), and previous self-harm (AOR 6.99 95% CI 3.65-13.38) were strongly associated with DV, as were indicators of perceived poor social support (AOR range 2.48-14.18). The presence of in-laws (AOR 2.16 95% CI 1.34-3.48), having three or more children (AOR 2.15 95% CI 1.05-4.41) and being divorced/separated/widowed were also strongly associated with DV (AOR 2.89 95% CI 1.14-7.36). There was no statistical evidence that any associations differed by sex. A multi-sectoral approach is needed to address DV in this context. Enhanced coordination between DV support services and mental health services may be beneficial. Further research and support for men as well as women is needed
