    Luminescence Spectroscopy of Semiconductor Surfaces and Interfaces

    Low energy cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CLS) employing incident electron energies in the range of a few kV or less enable measurement of electronic structure near semiconductor surfaces and interfaces. Coupled with photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), the CLS technique has been extended to characterize electronic structure tens of nanometers below the free surface at metal-semiconductor and semiconductor-semiconductor junctions. CLS has revealed discrete, deep electronic states for clean and metallized semiconductor surfaces as a function of atomic ordering as well as vicinal surfaces as a function of misorientation. A combination of CLS and PL reveals deep level features associated with strain relaxation and dislocations at heterojunction interfaces as well as variations in epilayer growth conditions. Such observations demonstrate the existence of discrete, deep levels in the semiconductor band gap and their sensitivity to chemical and atomic structure near surfaces and interfaces. Furthermore, the energies and densities of such deep levels provide a consistent picture of Fermi level stabilization and band bending at semiconductor contacts. Finally, our results indicate that deep level CLS/PL measurements are an effective, in-situ probe of surface and interface quality

    Elastic-plastic transition in MBE-grown GaSb semiconducting crystal examined by noindentation

    The present paper concerns the elastic-plastic nanodeformation of Te-doped GaSb crystals grown by molecular beam epitaxy on the n-type of GaSb substrate. The conventional analysis of nanoindentation data obtained with sharp triangular (Berkovich) and spherical tip revealed the elastic modulus (E = 83:07 1:78 GPa), hardness (H = 5:19 0:25 GPa) and “true hardness” (HT = 5:73 0:04 GPa). The registered pop-in event which indicates the elastic–plastic transition in GaSb crystal points towards the corresponding yield strength ( Y = 3:8 0:1 GPa).     A population-based study of the effect of pregnancy history on risk of stillbirth

    ObjectiveTo examine the effect of pregnancy history on the risk of stillbirth. MethodsIn a population-based cross-sectional study, data were reviewed from all women aged at least 20years with singleton pregnancies in Finland between 2000 and 2010. The primary outcomestillbirthwas defined as fetal death after 22 gestational weeks or death of a fetus weighing at least 500g. ResultsAmong 604047 singleton pregnancies, the prevalence of stillbirth was 3.17 per 1000 deliveries. Prevalence was lowest for multiparous women without previous pregnancy loss after adjusting for major pregnancy complications associated with stillbirth (placenta previa, placental abruption, and pre-eclampsia) and other confounders. Relative to these women, stillbirth prevalence was higher among multiparous women with previous spontaneous abortion and/or stillbirth (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.36), nulliparous women with no previous pregnancy loss (aOR 1.23, 95% CI 1.10-1.38), and nulliparous women with prior spontaneous abortion (aOR 1.43, 95% CI 1.18-1.74). ConclusionPrevious pregnancy loss was found to be an independent risk factor for stillbirth, irrespective of the number of prior deliveries. Spontaneous abortion assessed as a part of pregnancy history was found to be an independent risk factor for stillbirth.Peer reviewe

    Atomic layer deposition of TbF3 thin films

    Lanthanide fluoride thin films have gained interest as materials for various optical applications, including electroluminescent displays and mid-IR lasers. However, the number of atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes for lanthanide fluorides has remained low. In this work, we present an ALD process for TbF3 using tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)terbium and TiF4 as precursors. The films were grown at 175-350 degrees C. The process yields weakly crystalline films at the lowest deposition temperature, whereas strongly crystalline, orthorhombic TbF3 films are obtained at higher temperatures.     The COBRAS/SAMBA space mission

    COBRAS/SAMBA is an ESA mission designed for extensive, accurate mapping of the anisotropies of the Cosmic Background Radiation, with angular sensitivity from sub-degree scales up to and overlapping with the COBE-DMR resolution. This will allow a full identification of the primordial density perturbations which grew to form the large-scale structures observed in the present universe. The COBRAS/SAMBA maps will provide powerful tests for the inflationary model and decisive answers on the origin of cosmic structure. A combination of bolometric and radiometric instrumentation will ensure the sensitivity and wide spectral coverage required for accurate foreground discrimination. A far-Earth orbit has been selected to minimize the unwanted emission from the Earth. The project is currently in the Phase A study within the European Space Agency M3 programme

    Up to seven-fold inter-hospital differences in obstetric anal sphincter injury rates- A birth register-based study in Finland

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The occurrence of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS) - which may have serious, long-term effects on affected women, including faecal incontinence, despite primary repair - varies widely between countries and have been chosen one of the indicators for patient safety in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and in Nordic countries.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The aim of the study was to assess risks of OASIS among five university teaching hospitals and 14 non-university central hospitals with more than 1,000 deliveries annually during 1997-2007 in Finland. Women with singleton vaginal deliveries divided into two populations consisting of all 168,637 women from five university hospitals and all 255,660 women from non-university hospitals, respectively, derived from population-based register. Primiparous and multiparous women with OASIS (n = 2,448) were compared in terms of possible risk factors to primiparous and multiparous women without OASIS, respectively, using stepwise logistic regression analysis. The occurrences of OASIS varied from 0.7% to 2.1% in primiparous and from 0.1% to 0.3% in multiparous women among the university hospitals. Three-fold inter-hospital differences in OASIS rates did not significantly change after adjustment for patient mix or the use of interventions. In non-university hospitals OASIS rates varied from 0.2% to 1.4% in primiparous and from 0.02% to 0.4% in multiparous women, and the results remained virtually unchanged after adjustment for known risks.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Up to 3.2-fold inter-hospital differences in OASIS risk demonstrates significant differences in the quality of Finnish obstetric care.</p

    Large methane releases lead to strong aerosol forcing and reduced cloudiness

    The release of vast quantities of methane into the atmosphere as a result of clathrate destabilization is a potential mechanism for rapid amplification of global warming. Previous studies have calculated the enhanced warming based mainly on the radiative effect of the methane itself, with smaller contributions from the associated carbon dioxide or ozone increases. Here, we study the effect of strongly elevated methane (CH4) levels on oxidant and aerosol particle concentrations using a combination of chemistry-transport and general circulation models. A 10-fold increase in methane concentrations is predicted to significantly decrease hydroxyl radical (OH) concentrations, while moderately increasing ozone (O3). These changes lead to a 70 % increase in the atmospheric lifetime of methane, and an 18 % decrease in global mean cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNC). The CDNC change causes a radiative forcing that is comparable in magnitude to the longwave radiative forcing ("enhanced greenhouse effect") of the added methane. Together, the indirect CH4-O3 and CH4-OH-aerosol forcings could more than double the warming effect of large methane increases. Our findings may help explain the anomalously large temperature changes associated with historic methane releases
