    The social geography of childcare: 'making up' the middle class child

    Childcare is a condensate of disparate social forces and social processes. It is gendered and classed. It is subject to an excess of policy and political discourse. It is increasingly a focus for commercial exploitation. This is a paper reporting on work in progress in an ESRC funded research project (R000239232) on the choice and provision of pre-school childcare by middle class (service class) families in two contrasting London locations. Drawing on recent work in class analysis the paper examines the relationships between childcare choice, middle class fractions and locality. It suggests that on the evidence of the findings to date, there is some evidence of systematic differences between fractions in terms of values, perspectives and preferences for childcare, but a more powerful case for intra-class similarities, particularly when it comes to putting preferences into practice in the 'making up of a middle class child' through care and education

    Do Fermi-LAT observations really imply very large Lorentz factors in GRB outflows ?

    Recent detections of GeV photons in a few GRBs by Fermi-LAT have led to strong constraints on the bulk Lorentz factor in GRB outflows. To avoid a large gamma gamma optical depth, minimum values of the Lorentz factor are estimated to be as high as 800-1200 in some bursts. Here we present a detailed calculation of the gamma gamma optical depth taking into account both the geometry and the dynamics of the jet. In the framework of the internal shock model, we compute lightcurves in different energy bands and the corresponding spectrum and we show how the limits on the Lorentz factor can be significantly lowered compared to previous estimates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of the Gamma Ray Bursts 2010 Conference, Annapolis, USA.     Spin glass behavior in an interacting gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticle system

    In this paper we investigate the superspin glass behavior of a concentrated assembly of interacting maghemite nanoparticles and compare it to that of canonical atomic spin glass systems. ac versus temperature and frequency measurements show evidence of a superspin glass transition taking place at low temperature. In order to fully characterize the superspin glass phase, the aging behavior of both the thermo-remanent magnetization (TRM) and ac susceptibility has been investigated. It is shown that the scaling laws obeyed by superspin glasses and atomic spin glasses are essentially the same, after subtraction of a superparamagnetic contribution from the superspin glass response functions. Finally, we discuss a possible origin of this superparamagnetic contribution in terms of dilute spin glass models

    Typical poly-p-phenylene wires are characterized by strong interchromophoric electronic coupling with redox and optical properties being highly length-dependent. Herein we show that an incorporation of a pair of para-methoxy groups at each p-phenylene unit in poly-p-phenylene wires (i.e., PHEn) changes the nodal structure of HOMO that leads to length-invariant oxidation potentials and cation radical excitation energies. As such, PHEn represents a unique class of isoenergetic wires where hole delocalization mainly occurs via dynamic hopping and thus may serve as an efficient medium for long-range charge transfer. Availability of these wires will allow demonstration of long-range electron transfer via incoherent hopping using donor-bridge-acceptor systems with isoenergetic PHEn-based wires as bridges

    A liquid cesium target has been developed which allows the production and separate identification of the neutron deficient isotopes of xenon. The present report describes irradiations utilizing 34 to 41 MeV protons to produce millicurie quantities of Xe-127 and Xe-129m. At higher energies, however, the target could be used without modification to produce xenon isotopes as light as 119

    Directly interacting particles are considered in the multitime formalism of predictive relativistic mechanics. When the equations of motion leave a phase-space volume invariant, it turns out that the phase average of any first integral, covariantly defined as a flux across a 7n7n-dimensional surface, is conserved.
