Okun's Law and Movements over Time in the Unemployment Rate in Australia.
This article explains how movements in the unemployment rate reflect the relative rates of growth of employment and the labour force and are related to the participation rate, labour productivity growth and output growth. A framework is provided in which to analyse the determinants of movements in the unemployment rate. We look at the unemployment rate and its relationship to labour force and employment growth in the next section. In section 3 we define the participation rate and discuss how it relates to labour force growth. Then in Section 4, we consider Verdoon's Law and the relationship between output growth and employment growth. In Section 5 we combine the results in the previous section to determine the relationship between the unemployment rate and output growth. Finally, in Section 6, we summarise the findings. Calculation of Elastic Green's Functions for Lattices with Cavities
In this Brief Report, we present an algorithm for calculating the elastic
Lattice Greens Function of a regular lattice, in which defects are created by
removing lattice points. The method is computationally efficient, since the
required matrix operations are on matrices that scale with the size of the
defect subspace, and not with the size of the full lattice. This method allows

NASA/FAA general aviation crash dynamics program
The program involves controlled full scale crash testing, nonlinear structural analyses to predict large deflection elastoplastic response, and load attenuating concepts for use in improved seat and subfloor structure. Both analytical and experimental methods are used to develop expertise in these areas. Analyses include simplified procedures for estimating energy dissipating capabilities and comprehensive computerized procedures for predicting airframe response. These analyses are developed to provide designers with methods for predicting accelerations, loads, and displacements on collapsing structure. Tests on typical full scale aircraft and on full and subscale structural components are performed to verify the analyses and to demonstrate load attenuating concepts. A special apparatus was built to test emergency locator transmitters when attached to representative aircraft structure. The apparatus is shown to provide a good simulation of the longitudinal crash pulse observed in full scale aircraft crash tests

Regional Unemployment Disparities.
In this paper we examine the nature of disparities in regional (State) unemployment rates in Australia over the period 1978-1999 and their relationship to the national unemployment rate. As a measure of dispersion we use the sum of the (weighted) deviations of regional unemployment rates from the national rate. We show that this figure may be interpreted as the number of new jobs or labour force movements that would be needed to even out unemployment rates between regions, expressed as a proportion of the total number currently employed in all regions. Using co-integration analysis, we find that there is a (long-run) relationship between the degree of dispersion in the regional unemployment rates and the level of the national unemployment rate. The relationship between the two is negative implying that, as the national unemployment rate falls, micro and/or differentiated labour markets policies need to bite harder (and affect proportionately more people) if equity in unemployment across regions is to be maintained. We also find that the trade-off between dispersion and unemployment has become steeper in the period following significant deregulation of the Australian economy in the early Nineteen-Eighties. It would appear likely that this reflects an increase in differences in the Natural Rate of Unemployment between the regions since that time.UNEMPLOYMENT ; REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Energy Loss from Reconnection with a Vortex Mesh
Experiments in superfluid 4He show that at low temperatures, energy
dissipation from moving vortices is many orders of magnitude larger than
expected from mutual friction. Here we investigate other mechanisms for energy
loss by a computational study of a vortex that moves through and reconnects
with a mesh of small vortices pinned to the container wall. We find that such
reconnections enhance energy loss from the moving vortex by a factor of up to
100 beyond that with no mesh. The enhancement occurs through two different
mechanisms, both involving the Kelvin oscillations generated along the vortex
by the reconnections. At relatively high temperatures the Kelvin waves increase
the vortex motion, leading to more energy loss through mutual friction. As the
temperature decreases, the vortex oscillations generate additional reconnection
events between the moving vortex and the wall, which decrease the energy of the
moving vortex by transfering portions of its length to the pinned mesh on the

Survey of NASA research on crash dynamics
Ten years of structural crash dynamics research activities conducted on general aviation aircraft by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. Thirty-two full-scale crash tests were performed at Langley Research Center, and pertinent data on airframe and seat behavior were obtained. Concurrent with the experimental program, analytical methods were developed to help predict structural behavior during impact. The effects of flight parameters at impact on cabin deceleration pulses at the seat/occupant interface, experimental and analytical correlation of data on load-limiting subfloor and seat configurations, airplane section test results for computer modeling validation, and data from emergency-locator-transmitter (ELT) investigations to determine probable cause of false alarms and nonactivations are assessed. Computer programs which provide designers with analytical methods for predicting accelerations, velocities, and displacements of collapsing structures are also discussed
Projecting current and future location, quality, and connectivity of habitat for breeding birds in the Great Basin
We estimated the current location, quality, and connectivity of habitat for 50 species of breeding birds in four mountain ranges in the central Great Basin (Lander, Nye, and Eureka Counties, Nevada) and projected the future location, quality, and connectivity of habitat for these species given different scenarios of climate-induced land-cover change. In the United States, such models are relevant to federally mandated management of wild animals by state-level agencies. We sampled birds during the breeding seasons of 2001-2009 with fixed-radius point counts. For each species, we used boosted regression trees to model incidence (proportion of years a location was surveyed in which the species was present) as a function of topography and current land cover and climate. To assess model fit, we calculated the proportion of binomial deviance explained. We used cross-validation to estimate the predictive accuracy of the models. We applied the conservation planning program Zonation to identify locations where incidences of multiple species were maximized through time given current land cover and two scenarios of land-cover change, expansion of pinyon-juniper woodland into sagebrush shrubsteppe and contraction of riparian woodland. Models based on a set of 13 covariates derived from remotely sensed data had some predictive capacity for 41 of 50 species. Model outputs suggested substantial changes in amount of habitat for many species following projected expansion of pinyon-juniper woodland, but less pronounced changes following projected contraction of riparian woodland. Zonation analyses indicated that the spatial distribution of the highest-quality habitat for the avian assemblage was relatively consistent through time under both scenarios. Breeding birds in the Great Basin commonly are grouped in management plans on the basis of their general association with land-cover classes such as pinyon-juniper woodland, sagebrush shrubsteppe, and riparian woodland. However, even within these groups, the environmental attributes that explained a high proportion of variation in species\u27 incidences and the projected responses to different scenarios of land-cover change varied considerably among species
