    Measuring the activity of European and African Countries using Social Accounting Matrices

    Economic models at the micro, meso and macro levels presuppose the existence of consistent databases that make it possible to quantify the activity of enterprises, sectors, regions, countries or continents. Such models can also be important aids in the policy decision process, since they permit the construction of scenarios resulting from the adoption of policy measures and the consequent changes that they introduce. When consistent with the United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA), the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) can include all the nominal flows of the measured part of the economy, at the level of both production and the institutions, and therefore satisfies these requirements. Thus, in its numerical version, a SAM constitutes a database and provides a snapshot of the measured reality at a certain moment, whereas its possible algebraic versions, i.e. models that are based upon it, permit the construction of the above-mentioned scenarios. The possibility and usefulness of constructing SAMs for African countries consistent with the SNA will be examined and experimented. The SAM’s basic structure and consistency within the whole system will be studied, as well as any possible disaggregations, extensions, aggregates, indicators and balances that can be calculated.     Socio-economic studies with social accounting and sociodemographic matrices : an application to Portugal.

    In looking for empirical evidence about the activity of countries, a proposal is made for studying (measuring and modelling) the activity of countries through the use of Social Accounting Matrices (SAMs) and Socio-Demographic Matrices (SDMs). SAMs and SDMs are presented as tools that have specific features for conducting studies in several different areas, as well as for supporting policy decision processes. Based on methodological principles that are derived mainly from the works of Richard Stone, emphasis is placed on the desirability of working in a matrix format, which includes not only people (SDM), but also, at the same time, activities, products, factors of production and institutions (SAM). This is considered to be a way of capturing the relevant network of linkages and the corresponding multiplier effects, which can be used for the subsequent modelling of the activity of the countries studied. A method will be proposed for the construction of these matrices. In the case of the SAMs, it is proposed that their design and construction should adopt, at least as their starting point, the latest version of the System of National Accounts (2008 SNA) and the corresponding results of its adoption/adaptation by different countries.     Critical conditions for the wetting of soils

    The wettability of soil is of great importance for plants and soil biota and in determining whether flooding and soil erosion will occur. The analysis used in common measurements of soil hydrophobicity makes the assumption that water always enters soils if the average contact angle between the soil and water is 90 degrees or lower; these tests have been used for decades. The authors show theoretically and experimentally that water cannot enter many soils unless the contact angle is considerably lower than this, down to approximately 50 degrees. This difference generates serious errors in determining and modeling soil wetting behavior

    Soil can become extremely water repellent following forest fires or oil spillages, thus preventing penetration of water and increasing runoff and soil erosion. Here the authors show that evaporation of a droplet from the surface of a hydrophobic granular material can be an active process, lifting, self-coating, and selectively concentrating small solid grains. Droplet evaporation leads to the formation of temporary liquid marbles and, as droplet volume reduces, particles of different wettabilities compete for water-air interfacial surface area. This can result in a sorting effect with self-organization of a mixed hydrophobic-hydrophilic aggregate into a hydrophobic shell surrounding a hydrophilic core

    Most insects and spiders drown when submerged during flooding or tidal inundation, but some are able to survive and others can remain submerged indefinitely without harm. Many achieve this by natural adaptations to their surface morphology to trap films of air, creating plastrons which fix the water-vapor interface and provide an incompressible oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange surface. Here the authors demonstrate how the surface of an extremely water-repellent foam mimics this mechanism of underwater respiration and allows direct extraction of oxygen from aerated water. The biomimetic principle demonstrated can be applied to a wide variety of man-made superhydrophobic materials

    This study investigates whether a \u27free sampling\u27 marketing strategy induces an enduring WTP premium effect for public goods. Using data from a unique field experiment involving curbside recycling, we find that the premium effect associated with providing non-participating households a brief opportunity to participate in a curbside recycling program for free is relatively small and not enduring. It may therefore not be cost effective to offer a free-sampling participation incentive for this type (or similar types) of local public good(s)

    A lichen protected by a super-hydrophobic and breathable structure

    A species of lichen, Lecanora conizaeoides, is shown to be super-hydrophobic. It uses a combination of hydrophobic compounds and multi-layered roughness to shed water effectively. This is combined with gas channels to produce a biological analogue of a waterproof, breathable garment. The particular lichen grows mostly during wet seasons and is unusually resistant to acid rain [Hauck, M., 2003. The Bryotogist 106(2), 257-269; Honegger, R., 1998. Lichenologist 30(3),193-212]. The waterproof, breathable surface allows this lichen to photosynthesise when other species are covered with a layer of water. In addition, rainwater runs off the surface of the organism, reducing its intake of water from above and probably contributing to its resistance to acid rain

    Uptake of the lameness Five-Point Plan and its association with farmer-reported lameness prevalence: a cross-sectional study of 532 UK sheep farmers

    The aims of this research were to determine the uptake of a national strategy to reduce lameness in the UK flock, known as the Five-Point Plan (5 P P); explore the association between footrot vaccination (Footvax®) use and 5 P P adoption; investigate the management practices associated with farmer-reported percentage lameness through risk factor analysis; and identify the population attributable fractions of these management practices. In 2014, the 5 P P was launched to provide a practical, farm-level framework to help farmers reduce lameness to reach Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) targets. No published studies have explicitly explored its uptake in UK flocks nor its association with lameness prevalence. Understanding what parts of the 5 P P farmers adopt and which elements contribute towards the greatest reduction in lameness are integral in informing future strategies. Between November 2018 and February 2019, 532 UK sheep farmers completed a cross-sectional online and paper-based survey. The geometric mean of farmer-reported percentage lameness in ewes was 3.2 % (95 % CI: 2.8–3.6). Farmers adopted a median of 3 points of the plan, but was only fully-adopted by 5.8 % of farmers. The number of points adopted increased with flock size, with larger commercial flocks more likely to cull and vaccinate against footrot, but smaller, pedigree flocks were more likely to treat individual lame sheep. Vaccination was poorly associated with the uptake of other points of the 5 P P. Eight flock management factors were associated with significantly higher percentage lameness in ewes; not carrying out measures to avoid lameness transmission, not quarantining bought in stock, not treating individual lame sheep within three days, maintaining an open flock and foot trimming were all associated with a higher risk of lameness in flocks studied. In addition, using Footvax® for ≤5 years was associated with a higher risk of lameness, although vaccination could be a consequence of high flock lameness or these farmers were not implementing other effective managements, such as treating promptly. The highest PAFs were calculated for trimming lame sheep (16.9 %), maintaining an open flock (13.5 %) and not carrying out measures to avoid lameness transmission (11.8 %). We provide new evidence documenting the benefits of adopting parts of the 5 P P on reducing lameness prevalence in UK flocks, although uptake of these measures could be improved in flocks. Encouraging uptake of these measures could make an important contribution towards reducing the prevalence of lameness and reaching 2021 FAWC ≤ 2% lameness prevalence targets
