    The Low Quiescent X-Ray Luminosity of the Transient X-Ray Burster EXO 1747-214

    We report on X-ray and optical observations of the X-ray burster EXO 1747-214. This source is an X-ray transient, and its only known outburst was observed in 1984-1985 by the EXOSAT satellite. We re-analyzed the EXOSAT data to derive the source position, column density, and a distance upper limit using its peak X-ray burst flux. We observed the EXO 1747-214 field in 2003 July with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to search for the quiescent counterpart. We found one possible candidate just outside the EXOSAT error circle, but we cannot rule out the possibility that the source is unrelated to EXO 1747-214. Our conclusion is that the upper limit on the unabsorbed 0.3-8 keV luminosity is L < 7E31 erg/s, making EXO 1747-214 one of the faintest neutron star transients in quiescence. We compare this luminosity upper limit to the quiescent luminosities of 19 neutron star and 14 black hole systems and discuss the results in the context of the differences between neutron stars and black holes. Based on the theory of deep crustal heating by Brown and coworkers, the luminosity implies an outburst recurrence time of >1300 yr unless some form of enhanced cooling occurs within the neutron star. The position of the possible X-ray counterpart is consistent with three blended optical/IR sources with R-magnitudes between 19.4 and 19.8 and J-magnitudes between 17.2 and 17.6.     Background: Transfusion is very common in the intensive care unit (ICU), but practice is highly variable, as has recently been shown in non-bleeding critically ill patients practices survey. Bleeding patients in ICU require different blood products across a range of specific patient categories. We hypothesize that a large variety in transfusion practice exists in bleeding patients. Study design and methods: An international online survey was performed among physicians working in the ICU. Transfusion practice in massively and non-massively bleeding patients was examined, including transfusion ratios, thresholds, and the presence of transfusion guidelines. Results: Six hundred eleven respondents filled in the survey of which 401 could be analyzed, representing 64 countries. Among the respondents, 52% had a massive transfusion protocol (MTP) available at their ICU. In massively bleeding patients, 46% of the respondents used fixed transfusion component ratios. Of those who used fixed blood ratios, the 1:1:1 ratio (red blood cell [RBC] concentrates: plasma: platelet concentrates) was most commonly used (33%). The presence of an MTP was associated with a more frequent use of fixed ratios (p <.001). For RBC transfusion in the general non-massively bleeding ICU population, a hemoglobin (Hb) threshold of 7.0[7.0–7.3] g/dl was reported. In the general ICU population, a platelet count threshold of 50[26–50] × 109/L was applied. Discussion: Half of the centers had no massive transfusion protocol available.     Ultrasensitive TES Bolometers for Space Based FIR Astronomy

    We present results from the development of a background limited transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer for the wavelength band 30–60 ÎŒm. The bolometer consists of a Ti/Au superconducting thermometer and a Ta radiation absorber deposited on a 200ÎŒm×300ÎŒm200ÎŒm×300ÎŒm membrane of SixNySixNy suspended on long, narrow legs. This device is voltage biased and the current through the device is measured by a SQUID amplifier. The thermometer has transition temperature Tc = 108 mKTc = 108 mK and the device is operated from a 70 mK base plate. FIR radiation is coupled into a multimodc horn with entrance aperture of 450 ÎŒm, length 4.5 mm and exit aperture of 45 ÎŒm, which feeds a metal integrating cavity containing the detector. The radiation band is defined by a pair of lowpass and highpass mesh filters in front of the horn. Here we present measurements of optical noise equivalent power (NEP), optical efficiency, dynamic range and time constant. The results show that measured TES detectors are close to meeting the requirement of the “Band 3” of SAFARI FTS imaging instrument [1] on the SPICA mission [2]

    Toward Annealing Stable Molybdenum Oxide Based Hole Selective Contacts For Silicon Photovoltaics

    Molybdenum oxide MoOX combines a high work function with broadband optical transparency. Sandwiched between a hydrogenated intrinsic amorphous silicon passivation layer and a transparent conductive oxide, this material allows a highly efficient hole selective front contact stack for crystalline silicon solar cells. However, hole extraction from the Si wafer and transport through this stack degrades upon annealing at 190 C, which is needed to cure the screen printed Ag metallization applied to typical Si solar cells. Here, we show that effusion of hydrogen from the adjacent layers is a likely cause for this degradation, highlighting the need for hydrogen lean passivation layers when using such metal oxide based carrier selective contacts. Pre MoOX deposition annealing of the passivating a Si H layer is shown to be a straightforward approach to manufacturing MoOX based devices with high fill factors using screen printed metallization cured at 190

    Direct response of twin-slot antenna-coupled hot-electron bolometer mixers designed for 2.5 THz radiation detection

    We measure the direct response of a Nb diffusion-cooled hot-electron bolometer mixer in a frequency range between 0.5 and 3.5 THz. The mixer consists essentially of a twin-slot antenna, a co-planar waveguide transmission line and a Nb superconducting bridge. It is designed for use in receivers with astronomical and atmospherical applications around 2.5 THz. We calculate the impedance of the antenna, the transmission line, and the bridge separately using models which are developed for frequencies below 1 THz and predict the direct response of the mixer. We demonstrate that these models can be applied to much higher frequencies. However, the measured central frequency is 10%-15% lower than predicted. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics.     Driving pressure during general anesthesia for open abdominal surgery (DESIGNATION) : study protocol of a randomized clinical trial

    Background Intraoperative driving pressure (Delta P) is associated with development of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC). When tidal volume (V-T) is kept constant, Delta P may change according to positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)-induced changes in lung aeration. Delta P may decrease if PEEP leads to a recruitment of collapsed lung tissue but will increase if PEEP mainly causes pulmonary overdistension. This study tests the hypothesis that individualized high PEEP, when compared to fixed low PEEP, protects against PPC in patients undergoing open abdominal surgery. Methods The "Driving prESsure durIng GeNeral AnesThesIa for Open abdomiNal surgery trial" (DESIGNATION) is an international, multicenter, two-group, double-blind randomized clinical superiority trial. A total of 1468 patients will be randomly assigned to one of the two intraoperative ventilation strategies. Investigators screen patients aged >= 18 years and with a body mass index <= 40 kg/m(2), scheduled for open abdominal surgery and at risk for PPC. Patients either receive an intraoperative ventilation strategy with individualized high PEEP with recruitment maneuvers (RM) ("individualized high PEEP") or one in which PEEP of 5 cm H2O without RM is used ("low PEEP"). In the "individualized high PEEP" group, PEEP is set at the level at which Delta P is lowest. In both groups of the trial, V-T is kept at 8 mL/kg predicted body weight. The primary endpoint is the occurrence of PPC, recorded as a collapsed composite of adverse pulmonary events. Discussion DESIGNATION will be the first randomized clinical trial that is adequately powered to compare the effects of individualized high PEEP with RM versus fixed low PEEP without RM on the occurrence of PPC after open abdominal surgery. The results of DESIGNATION will support anesthesiologists in their decisions regarding PEEP settings during open abdominal surgery
