    Isotope dependence of energy, momentum and particle confinement in tokamaks

    The isotope dependence of plasma transport will have a significant impact on the performance of future D-T experiments in JET and ITER and eventually on the fusion gain and economics of future reactors. In preparation for future D-T operation on JET, dedicated experiments and comprehensive transport analyses were performed in H, D and H-D mixed plasmas. The analysis of the data has demonstrated an unexpectedly strong and favourable dependence of the global confinement of energy, momentum and particles in ELMy H-mode plasmas on the atomic mass of the main ion species, the energy confinement time scaling as τE∼A0.5 (Maggi et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, vol. 60, 2018, 014045; JET Team, Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, pp. 1227–1244), i.e. opposite to the expectations based only on local gyro-Bohm (GB) scaling, τE∼A−0.5 , and stronger than in the commonly used H-mode scaling for the energy confinement (Saibene et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, 1133; ITER Physics Basis, Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, 2175). The scaling of momentum transport and particle confinement with isotope mass is very similar to that of energy transport. Nonlinear local GENE gyrokinetic analysis shows that the observed anti-GB heat flux is accounted for if collisions, E × B shear and plasma dilution with low-Z impurities (9Be) are included in the analysis (E and B are, respectively the electric and magnetic fields). For L-mode plasmas a weaker positive isotope scaling τE∼A0.14 has been found in JET (Maggi et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, vol. 60, 2018, 014045), similar to ITER97-L scaling (Kaye et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 37, 1997, 1303). Flux-driven quasi-linear gyrofluid calculations using JETTO-TGLF in L-mode show that local GB scaling is not followed when stiff transport (as is generally the case for ion temperature gradient modes) is combined with an imposed boundary condition taken from the experiment, in this case predicting no isotope dependence. A dimensionless identity plasma pair in hydrogen and deuterium L-mode plasmas has demonstrated scale invariance, confirming that core transport physics is governed, as expected, by the 4 dimensionless parameters ρ*, ν*, β, q (normalised ion Larmor radius, collisionality, plasma pressure and safety factor) consistently with global quasi-linear gyrokinetic TGLF calculations (Maggi et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 59, 2019, 076028). We compare findings in JET with those in different devices and discuss the possible reasons for the different isotope scalings reported from different devices. The diversity of observations suggests that the differences may result not only from differences affecting the core, e.g. heating schemes, but are to a large part due to differences in device-specific edge and wall conditions, pointing to the importance of better understanding and controlling pedestal and edge processes.EUROfusion Consortium grant agreement No 63305

    The presence of impurities is considered in gyrokinetic calculations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) instabilities and turbulence in the reversed field pinch device RFX-mod. This device usually exhibits hollow Carbon/Oxygen profiles, peaked in the outer core region.     Neon seeding effects on two high-performance baseline plasmas on the Joint European Torus

    We present the JETTO-QuaLiKiz-SANCO fully predictive modelling of two JET-ILW high-performance baseline plasmas, a Ne seeded shot and an equivalent unseeded one. The motivation of the work lies in the experimental observation of a slightly higher confinement and performance of the Ne seeded shot with respect to the unseeded one, despite sharing the same main plasma parameters and heating powers. Moreover, the neon seeded shot shows a lower pedestal electron density and a higher core ion temperature with respect to the unseeded one. Integrated modelling is performed in order to understand if the cause of the improved confinement has to be ascribed to the improved pedestal parameters with neon seeding or if an impurity-induced turbulence stabilization is at play. The QuaLiKiz transport model is used for predicting the electron density, electron and ion temperatures and rotation in the core up to the pedestal top, while the pedestal is empirically modelled to reproduce the experimental kinetic profiles. The thermal diffusivities of the two shots, computed by QuaLiKiz, are compared, as well as the turbulence spectra, suggesting that the reduced transport found in the neon seeded shot is due in part to the stabilization of ion temperature gradient and electron temperature gradient modes. Further modelling is performed in order to disentangle the neon seeding effects, which are a direct effect on the turbulence stabilization and an indirect effect on the pedestal parameters. The results suggest that the improved performance with neon is due to a combination of turbulence stabilization and improved pedestal parameters

    Role of NBI fuelling in contributing to density peaking between the ICRH and NBI identity plasmas on JET

    Density peaking has been studied between an ICRH and NBI identity plasma in JET. The comparison shows that 8 MW of NBI heating/fueling increases the density peaking by a factor of two, being R/L (n) = 0.45 for the ICRH pulse and R/L (n) = 0.93 for the NBI one averaged radially over rho (tor) = 0.4, 0.8. The dimensionless profiles of q, rho *, upsilon *, beta (n) and T (i)/T (e) approximate to 1 were matched within 5% difference except in the central part of the plasma (rho (tor) < 0.3). The difference in the curvature pinch (same q-profile) and thermo-pinch (T (i) = T (e)) between the ICRH and NBI discharges is virtually zero. Both the gyro-kinetic simulations and integrated modelling strongly support the experimental result where the NBI fuelling is the main contributor to the density peaking for this identity pair. It is to be noted here that the integrated modeling does not reproduce the measured electron density profiles, but approximately reproduces the difference in the density profiles between the ICRH and NBI discharge. Based on these modelling results and the analyses, the differences between the two pulses in impurities, fast ions (FIs), toroidal rotation and radiation do not cause any such changes in the background transport that would invalidate the experimental result where the NBI fuelling is the main contributor to the density peaking. This result of R/L (n) increasing by a factor of 2 per 8 MW of NBI power is valid for the ion temperature gradient dominated low power H-mode plasmas. However, some of the physics processes influencing particle transport, like rotation, turbulence and FI content scale with power, and therefore, the simple scaling on the role of the NBI fuelling in JET is not necessarily the same under higher power conditions or in larger devices

    Isotope Dependence of Confinement in JET-ILW Deuterium and Hydrogen Plasmas

    Heat, particle and momentum confinement in L- and H-mode in deuterium, hydrogen and in D/H mixtures have been investigated in JET with the ITER-like wall (JET-ILW). The paper expands on previous work [1,2] by presenting new results on heat, momentum and particle transport using measured ion temperatures and toroidal rotation frequencies, as well as new gyrokinetic analyses and pedestal studies. In L-mode a weak positive scaling of thermal stored energy with ion mass, EthA0.15, is found [1], consistently with multi-machine scaling EthA0.2 [3]. Differences between species in global particle confinement are similarly weak. Core temperature profiles are resilient to changes in input power with R/LTe8 at mid-radius [1]. Flux-driven core transport modelling with JETTO-TGLF show ITG’s to be dominant and predict no isotope scaling as a result of the Ti profile resilience (stiffness), showing that global confinement can depart from simple local GyroBohm scaling. In type I ELMy H-mode it was not possible, except in a couple of cases, to establish the same pedestal and core densities in H as in D, despite gas fuelling rates several times higher in H, showing a strong reduction of global particle confinement in hydrogen. These discharges, too, have stiff temperature profiles with no apparent difference in core R/LTe between species, i.e. differences between species in core and global confinement arise as a result of differences in the pedestal, the most striking of which are differences in pedestal density and pedestal density width. Regressions for the thermal stored energy from kinetic measurements and independently from EFIT equilibrium reconstructions provide mass exponents near 0.4, i.e. twice that of IPB98(y,2). Momentum and particle confinement have a similar strong scaling with isotope mass. Nonlinear GENE gyrokinetic flux-tube calculations at mid-radius, including the effects of collisions, EB and impurities, show a reversal of GyroBohm scaling in the core of H-modes. Dimensionless identity experiments (identical *,*,q) for H and D pairs provided good matches for the kinetic profiles in L-mode and near-identical normalised confinement times, in agreement with JETTO-TGLF modelling [4]

    ICRH operations and experiments during the JET-ILW tritium and DTE2 campaigns

    2021 has culminated with the completion of the JET-ILW DTE2 experimental campaign. This contribution summarizes Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) operations from system and physics point of view. Improvements to the (ICRH) system, to operation procedures and to real time RF power control were implemented to address specific constraints from tritium and deuterium-tritium operations and increase the system reliability and power availability during D-T pulses. ICRH was operated without the ITER-Like Antenna (ILA) because water leaked from an in-vessel capacitor into the vessel on day-2 of the D-T campaign. Three weeks were required to identify and isolate the leak and resume plasma operations. Dedicated RF-Plasma Wall Interaction (PWI) experiments were conducted; tritium plasmas exhibit a higher level of Be sputtering on the outer wall and impurity content when compared to deuterium or hydrogen plasmas. The JET-DTE2 campaigns provided the opportunity to characterize ICRH schemes foreseen for the ITER operation, in the ITER like wall environment in ELMy H-mode scenarios aiming at maximizing fusion performance. The second harmonic tritium resonance heating and to a lesser extent minority 3He heating (ITER D-T ICRH reference schemes) lead to improved ion temperature and fusion performance when compared to hydrogen minority ICRH. However, these discharges suffered from a lack of stationarity and gradual impurity accumulation potentially because of a deficit of ICRH power when using JET antennas at lower frequencies. Fundamental deuterium ICRH was used in tritium-rich plasmas and with deuterium Neutral Beam Heating; this ICRH scheme proved to be very efficient boosting ion temperature and fusion performance in these plasmas
