Computerized data collection and reduction from an X-ray diffractometer
A series of computer programs written for use with a Philips X-ray diffractometer and a Hewlett Packard 9825A desk top computer is described. These programs permit the collection and storage on disk of the number of x-ray counts and the associated 2-thera angles across line profiles. Automatic background subtraction, integrated intensity, correction for the angular dependance of the Lorentz, polarization, and atomic scattering factors, peak location, K-alpha 2 removal, and calculation of Fourier coefficients are performed. The programs are written for a computer configured with a disk drive, but they can be easily modified to run from the cassette tape drive that is integral to the 9825A computer
Design and demonstration of a system for the deposition of atomic-oxygen durable coatings for reflective solar dynamic power system concentrators
A system for the vacuum deposition of atomic-oxygen durable coatings for reflective solar dynamic power systems (SDPS) concentrators was designed and demonstrated. The design issues pertinent to SDPS were developed by the Government Aerospace Systems Division of the Harris Corporation and are described in NASA-CR-179489. Both design and demonstration phases have been completed. At the time of this report the deposition system was ready for coating of facets for SDPS concentrators. The materials issue relevant to the coating work were not entirely resolved. These issues can only be resolved when substrates which are comparable to those which will be used in flight hardware are available. The substrates available during the contract period were deficient in the areas of surface roughness and contamination. These issues are discussed more thoroughly in the body of the report
The horizon problem for prevalent surfaces
We investigate the box dimensions of the horizon of a fractal surface defined
by a function . In particular we show that a prevalent surface
satisfies the `horizon property', namely that the box dimension of the horizon
is one less than that of the surface. Since a prevalent surface has box
dimension 3, this does not give us any information about the horizon of
surfaces of dimension strictly less than 3. To examine this situation we
introduce spaces of functions with surfaces of upper box dimension at most
\alpha, for \alpha [2,3). In this setting the behaviour of the horizon is
more subtle. We construct a prevalent subset of these spaces where the lower
box dimension of the horizon lies between the dimension of the surface minus
one and 2. We show that in the sense of prevalence these bounds are as tight as
possible if the spaces are defined purely in terms of dimension. However, if we
work in Lipschitz spaces, the horizon property does indeed hold for prevalent
functions. Along the way, we obtain a range of properties of box dimensions of
sums of functions
Medium and large-scale variations of dynamo-induced electric fields from AE ion drift measurements
Current models of the low latitude electric field are largely based on data from incoherent scatter radars. These observations are extended through the addition of the rather extensive high quality electric field measurements from the Ion Drift Meter (IDM) aboard the Atmosphere Explorer (AE) spacecraft. Some preliminary results obtained from the Unified Abstract files of satellite AE-E are presented. This satellite was active from the end of 1975 through June 1981 in various elliptical and circular orbits having an inclination near 20 deg. The resulting data can be examined for the variation of ion drift with latitude, longitude, season, solar cycle, altitude, and magnetic activity. The results presented deal primarily with latitudinal variations of the drift features. Diagrams of data are given and briefly interpreted. The preliminary results presented here indicate that IDM data from the AE and the more recent Dynamics Explorer B spacecraft should continue to disclose some interesting and previously unobserved dynamical features of the low latitude F region
A Complete Atlas of HI Absorption toward HII Regions in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS1)
We present a complete catalog of H I emission and absorption spectrum pairs,
toward H II regions, detectable within the boundaries of the Southern Galactic
Plane Survey (SGPS I), a total of 252 regions. The catalog is presented in
graphical, numerical and summary formats. We demonstrate an application of this

The localization sequence for the algebraic K-theory of topological K-theory
We prove a conjecture of Rognes by establishing a localization cofiber
sequence of spectra, K(Z) to K(ku) to K(KU) to Sigma K(Z), for the algebraic
K-theory of topological K-theory. We deduce the existence of this sequence as a
consequence of a devissage theorem identifying the K-theory of the Waldhausen
category of Postnikov towers of modules over a connective A-infinity ring
spectrum R with the Quillen K-theory of the abelian category of finitely
