    Evaluation of the applicability of a marine biotic index to characterize the status of estuarine ecosystems: the case of Mondego estuary (Portugal)

    The need for new tools to assess the environmental status of coastal and estuarine systems encouraged Borja et al. [Mar. Pollut. Bull. 40 (2000) 1100] to develop a new index, the AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), which needs to be tested as much as possible in different geographical areas to assess its applicability. This index was applied in the Mondego estuary (western coast of Portugal) together with the Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, Simpson, and W-statistic indices, which are widely used in detecting the effects of marine pollution. Results show that, in some cases, the AMBI provides a more accurate assessment of environmental conditions than the other indices, which were influenced by the dominance of certain species, allowing us to consider it as a promising tool to characterize marine and estuarine environmental quality.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6W87-4CSG1T5-2/1/6d688b07e739ef7fe77229f28bc9199

    Perdas de solo e valoração econômica.

    O principal objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma discussão sobre a erosão do solo do ponto de vista físico e econômico, integrados à realidade de uma microbacia hidrográfica. Para a realização de estimativas de perdas de solo foi utilizada a Equação Universal de Perdas de Solo - EUPS e as considerações sobre o índice -t- de tolerância de perdas de solo. Para o cálculo do valor econômico das perdas de solo foi utilizado o método do custo de reposição de nutrientes. Os estudos foram conduzidos na microbacia bacia hidrográfica do Taquara Branca, localizada no município de Sumaré, Estado de São Paulo. Os resultados indicam perdas de solo, físicas e econômicas, elevadas mesmo levando-se em consideração os índices de tolerância de perdas de solo apropriados para as unidades de solo existentes na microbacia

    Assessing the accuracy of different remapping methods in adaptive mesh refinement

    Additive manufacturing of metals has attracted much attention over the last years, promoting the development of several computational models for numerical simulation of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. Nevertheless, the finite element analysis of the LPBF process requires a large computational time. Thus, adaptive mesh refinement strategies are commonly adopted to reduce computational cost, which require some remapping procedure to transfer the state variables from the old mesh to the new one. The present study analyses two different remapping algorithms, namely the Inverse Isoparametric Mapping (IIM) and the Dual Kriging (DK) method. The IIM method uses the shape functions of the finite elements, while the DK method provides an explicit parametric interpolation. The case study adopted covers both coarsening and refinement procedures, using a mathematical function to define the mapped state variable. The accuracy of the remapping methods was lower in the refinement in comparison with the coarsening procedure. The error in the approximation is lower using the DK method in comparison with the IIM method.     Nematodes vs Macrofauna assemblages along an estuarine gradient (Mondego estuary, Portugal)

    The spatial distribution of the nematodes and macrofauna communities in the subtidal sediments along estuarine gradient in the Mondego estuary was studied. The main aim is to compare the response of the nematodes and macrofauna communities structure adjusted for each estuarine stretch. Spatial distribution of nematode assemblages followed the estuarine gradients, allowing to distinguish: The freshwater and oligohaline sections, characterised by the presence of freshwater nematodes, low densities and diversity; Mesohaline section, the densities and diversity were also low; Polyhaline and Euhaline sections, attained highest densities and diversity. Significant differences of diversity were obtained between estuarine sections by Shannon-Wiener index. Significant differences in macrofauna densities were also obtained, the highest values were obtained in euhaline and mesohaline areas. The euhaline stations presented higher species richness, while the freshwater section registered lower values. Significant differences of diversity were also obtained between estuarine sections by Shannon-Wiener index. From the management point of view both communities are very useful in assessing ecological quality in transitional waters, however the rapid response of nematodes to environmental changes became an important tool
