    The case for a cold dark matter cusp in Draco

    We use a new mass modelling method, GravSphere, to measure the central dark matter density profile of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Draco's star formation shut down long ago, making it a prime candidate for hosting a 'pristine' dark matter cusp, unaffected by stellar feedback during galaxy formation. We first test GravSphere on a suite of tidally stripped mock 'Draco'-like dwarfs. We show that we are able to correctly infer the dark matter density profile of both cusped and cored mocks within our 95% confidence intervals. While we obtain only a weak inference on the logarithmic slope of these density profiles, we are able to obtain a robust inference of the amplitude of the inner dark matter density at 150pc, ρDM(150pc)\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,{\rm pc}). We show that, combined with constraints on the density profile at larger radii, this is sufficient to distinguish a Λ\Lambda Cold Dark Matter (Λ\LambdaCDM) cusp - that has ρDM(150pc)>1.8×108Mkpc3\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,{\rm pc}) > 1.8 \times 10^8\,{\rm M}_\odot \,{\rm kpc}^{-3} - from alternative dark matter models that have lower inner densities. We then apply GravSphere to the real Draco data. We find that Draco has an inner dark matter density of ρDM(150pc)=2.40.6+0.5×108Mkpc3\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,{\rm pc}) = 2.4_{-0.6}^{+0.5} \times 10^8\,{\rm M}_\odot \,{\rm kpc}^{-3}, consistent with a Λ\LambdaCDM cusp. Using a velocity independent SIDM model, calibrated on Λ\LambdaSIDM cosmological simulations, we show that Draco's high central density gives an upper bound on the SIDM cross section of σ/m<0.57cm2g1\sigma/m < 0.57\,{\rm cm}^2\,{\rm g}^{-1} at 99% confidence. We conclude that the inner density of nearby dwarf galaxies like Draco provides a new and competitive probe of dark matter models.Comment: 19 pages, 11 Figures.     Dark matter heats up in dwarf galaxies

    Gravitational potential fluctuations driven by bursty star formation can kinematically 'heat up' dark matter at the centres of dwarf galaxies. A key prediction of such models is that, at a fixed dark matter halo mass, dwarfs with a higher stellar mass will have a lower central dark matter density. We use stellar kinematics and HI gas rotation curves to infer the inner dark matter densities of eight dwarf spheroidal and eight dwarf irregular galaxies with a wide range of star formation histories. For all galaxies, we estimate the dark matter density at a common radius of 150pc, ρDM(150pc)\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,\mathrm{pc}). We find that our sample of dwarfs falls into two distinct classes. Those that stopped forming stars over 6Gyrs ago favour central densities ρDM(150pc)>108Mkpc3\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,\mathrm{pc})>10^8\,{\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm kpc}^{-3}, consistent with cold dark matter cusps, while those with more extended star formation favour ρDM(150pc)<108Mkpc3\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,\mathrm{pc})<10^8\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,{\rm kpc}^{-3}, consistent with shallower dark matter cores. Using abundance matching to infer pre-infall halo masses, M200M_{200}, we show that this dichotomy is in excellent agreement with models in which dark matter is heated up by bursty star formation. In particular, we find that ρDM(150pc)\rho_{\rm DM}(150\,\mathrm{pc}) steadily decreases with increasing stellar mass-to-halo mass ratio, M/M200M_*/M_{200}. Our results suggest that, to leading order, dark matter is a cold, collisionless, fluid that can be kinematically 'heated up' and moved around.Comment: 22 pages, 10 Figures.     Molecular hydrogen in the young starburst in NGC 253

    Shocked molecular hydrogen has been observed around the nucleus of the nearby galaxy, NGC 253. This galaxy has a relatively modest luminosity (approx. 3 x 10 to the 10th power solar luminosities) and appears to have no distortions or companions that would indicate a possible interaction. The energy of the galaxy appears to be derived primarily from a starburst. Thus, our observations have caused us to examine the starburst process in some detail to identify how the molecular hydrogen is excited. It is proposed that the molecular hydrogen emission is produced by collisions of dense molecular clouds accelerated by supernovae explosions. Within the nucleus, this process occurs early in the life of the starbust. This suggest a sequence of nuclear starburst development; examples along this sequence from young to old would include NGC 253, M82, NGC 1097, and M31

    The night-sky at the Calar Alto Observatory

    We present a characterization of the main properties of the night-sky at the Calar Alto observatory for the time period between 2004 and 2007. We use optical spectrophotometric data, photometric calibrated images taken in moonless observing periods, together with the observing conditions regularly monitored at the observatory, such as atmospheric extinction and seeing. We derive, for the first time, the typical moonless night-sky optical spectrum for the observatory. The spectrum shows a strong contamination by different pollution lines, in particular from Mercury lines, which contribution to the sky-brightness in the different bands is of the order of ~0.09 mag, ~0.16 mag and ~0.10 mag in B, V and R respectively. The zenith-corrected values of the moonless night-sky surface brightness are 22.39, 22.86, 22.01, 21.36 and 19.25 mag arcsec^-2 in U, B, V, R and I, which indicates that Calar Alto is a particularly dark site for optical observations up to the I-band. The fraction of astronomical useful nights at the observatory is ~70%, with a ~30% of photometric nights. The typical extinction at the observatory is k_V~0.15 mag in the Winter season, with little dispersion. In summer the extinction has a wider range of values, although it does not reach the extreme peaks observed at other sites. The median seeing for the last two years (2005-6) was ~0.90", being smaller in the Summer (~0.87") than in the Winter (~0.96"). We conclude in general that after 26 years of operations Calar Alto is still a good astronomical site, being a natural candidate for future large aperture optical telescopes.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publishing in the Publications of Astronomical Society of the Pacific (PASP

    Updated parametric prop-fan data packages are presented and the rationale used in developing the new prop-fan data is detailed. These data represent Hamilton Standard's projections of prop-fan characteristics for aircraft that are expected to be in-service in the 1985 to 1990 time frame. The basic prop-fan configuration was designed for efficient cruise operation at 0.8 Mach number and 10,668M altitude. The design blade tip speed is 244 mps and the design power loading is 301 KW/M squared

    The current through nanostructures like quantum dots can be stabilized by a feedback loop that continuously adjusts system parameters as a function of the number of tunnelled particles nn. At large times, the feedback loop freezes the fluctuations of nn which leads to highly accurate, continuous single particle transfers.     National counter-terrorism (C-T) policies and challenges to human rights and civil liberties: Case study of United Kingdom

    In the UK the rise post-2005 in “home-grown” terrorism, relying to a significant extent on strikes on soft targets by “self-starters,” means that the search for effective preventive measures remains a continuing concern. Below a number of the preventive counter-terror measures adopted post-9/11, and incrementally strengthened in response to the current threat, are found to fall into three categories and represent interventions at the stages in the path toward attacks. This chapter focuses on selected examples of these preventive measures. In terms of three key stages, firstly, there is the attempt to prevent radicalization, under the “Prevent” strategy. A second strategy relies on taking certain measures to control the activities of those considered likely – on the balance of probabilities – to engage in terrorist-related activity. A third preventive strategy relies on the special terrorism offences under the Terrorism Acts 2000 and 2006, as amended, intended to allow for intervention at a very early stage in terrorist plots and in preparing or instigating terrorist acts (“precursor” offences)

    Preliminary design and cost of a 1-megawatt solar-pumped iodide laser space-to-space transmission station

    A preliminary conceptual design of a space-based solar pumped iodide laser emitting 1 megawatt of laser power for space-to-space power transmission is described. A near parabolic solar collector focuses sunlight onto the t-C4F9I (perfluoro-t butyl iodide) lasant within a transverse flow optical cavity. Using waste heat, a thermal system was designed to supply compressor and auxiliary power. System components were designed with weight and cost estimates assigned. Although cost is very approximate, the cost comparison of individual system components leads to valuable insights for future research. In particular, it was found that laser efficiency was not a dominant cost or weight factor, the dominant factor being the laser cavity and laser transmission optics. The manufacturing cost was approx. two thirds of the total cost with transportation to orbit the remainder. The flowing nonrenewable lasant comprised 20% of the total life cycle cost of the system and thus was not a major cost factor. The station mass was 92,000 kg without lasant, requiring approx. four shuttle flights to low Earth orbit where an orbital transfer vehicle will transport it to the final altitude of 6378 km

    Systematic derivation of a surface polarization model for planar perovskite solar cells

    Increasing evidence suggests that the presence of mobile ions in perovskite solar cells can cause a current-voltage curve hysteresis. Steady state and transient current-voltage characteristics of a planar metal halide CH3_3NH3_3PbI3_3 perovskite solar cell are analysed with a drift-diffusion model that accounts for both charge transport and ion vacancy motion. The high ion vacancy density within the perovskite layer gives rise to narrow Debye layers (typical width \sim2nm), adjacent to the interfaces with the transport layers, over which large drops in the electric potential occur and in which significant charge is stored. Large disparities between (I) the width of the Debye layers and that of the perovskite layer (\sim600nm) and (II) the ion vacancy density and the charge carrier densities motivate an asymptotic approach to solving the model, while the stiffness of the equations renders standard solution methods unreliable. We derive a simplified surface polarisation model in which the slow ion dynamic are replaced by interfacial (nonlinear) capacitances at the perovskite interfaces. Favourable comparison is made between the results of the asymptotic approach and numerical solutions for a realistic cell over a wide range of operating conditions of practical interest.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figure
