Comparisons of Animal âSmartsâ Using the First Four Stages of the Model of Hierarchical Complexity
The Model of Hierarchical Complexity is a behavioral model of development and evolution of the complexity of behavior. It is based on task analysis. Tasks are ordered in terms of their hierarchical complexity, which is an ordinal scale that measures difficulty. The hierarchical difficulty of tasks is categorized as the order of hierarchical complexity. Successful performance on a task is called the behavioral stage. This model can be applied to non-human animals, and humans. Using data from some of the simplest animals and also somewhat more complex ones, this analysis describes the four lowest behavioral stages and illustrate them using the behaviors of a range of simple organisms. For example, Stage 1 tasks, and performance on them, are addressed with automatic unconditioned responses. Behavior at this Stage includes sensing, tropisms, habituation and, other automatic behaviors. Single cell organisms operate at this Stage. Stage 2 tasks include these earlier behaviors, but also include respondent conditioning but not operant conditioning. Animals such as some simple invertebrates have shown respondent conditioning, but not operant conditioning. Stage 3 tasks coordinate three instances of these earlier tasks to make possible operant conditioning. These stage 3 performances are similar to those of some invertebrates and also insects. Stage 4 tasks organisms coordinate 2 or more circular sensory-motor task actions into a superordinate âconceptâ. This explanation of the early stages of the Model of Hierarchical Complexity may help future research in animal behavior, and comparative psychology.
Gravity in the 3+1-Split Formalism II: Self-Duality and the Emergence of the Gravitational Chern-Simons in the Boundary
We study self-duality in the context of the 3+1-split formalism of gravity
with non-zero cosmological constant. Lorentzian self-dual configurations are
conformally flat spacetimes and have boundary data determined by classical
solutions of the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons. For Euclidean
self-dual configurations, the relationship between their boundary initial
positions and initial velocity is also determined by the three-dimensional
gravitational Chern-Simons. Our results imply that bulk self-dual
configurations are holographically described by the gravitational Chern-Simons
theory which can either viewed as a boundary generating functional or as a

Evaluation of efficacy of Carica papaya leaf extracts to increase platelet count in hydroxyurea induced thrombocytopenia in Albino rats
Background: Dengue is an infectious disease associated with high mortality and morbidity. Being a viral disease, there is no specific drug available for treatment. There are some reports that Carica papaya leaf extract may improve the clinical condition of dengue patients. However, to support this, at present, there is no systematically searched and synthesized evidence available. Hence this study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of commercial preparation of Carica papaya leaves with freshly prepared Carica papaya leaf extracted.Methods: 48 albino rats were randomly divided into eight groups of six each. Thrombocytopenia was induced by giving hydroxyurea (15mg/kg) orally. Group I and II served as saline and toxic control group respectively. Other six groups were given two different doses of either commercial extract or fresh extract orally for five days. 1ml of blood was withdrawn at baseline,3rd and 6th day of the study. Platelet, WBC, RBC count, clotting and bleeding time were determined.Results: Mean platelet count increased significantly on day 6 in both low dose (2.06 to 4.93lakh/mm3) and human equivalent dose (2.73 to 7.66lakh/mm3) of commercial extract groups compared to the toxic control group (p<0.05). Similarly, the mean platelet count increased significantly for human equivalent dose in fresh leaf extract group (3.17 to 4.69lakh/mm3) but the increase in low dose fresh extract (3.28 to 3.76lakh/mm3) was not significant. There was no significant rise in mean platelets count, mean RBC count, WBC count, decrease in mean bleeding and clotting time between commercial extract and fresh leaf extract group for both low dose and human equivalent dose.Conclusions: Efficacy of fresh leaf extract of Carica papaya was not inferior to commercial available preparation. Fresh Carica papaya leaf extract no doubt offers a potential therapeutic efficacy which is cost effective, more affordable and accessible treatment in patients with thrombocytopenia
A phase II study of continuous-infusion 5-fluorouracil with cisplatin and epirubicin in inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Carcinomas of the exocrine pancreas respond poorly to most chemotherapy regimens. Recently continuous infusional 5-fluorouracil (200 mg m-(2)day-1) with 3 weekly cisplatin (60 mg m-2) and epirubicin (50 mg m-2) (the ECF regimen) has proven to be an active regimen in gastric and breast cancer and consequently worthy of further study in pancreatic cancer. Thirty-five patients were treated with the ECF regimen as above, of whom 29 were evaluable for response and 32 were evaluable for toxicity. The mean age was 59 years (range 37-75). Sixteen patients had locally advanced disease at presentation and 19 had metastases. Objective tumour responses were documented in five (17.3%) patients who achieved a partial response; in 18 (62%) patients there were no change and six (20.7%) patients progressed on therapy. Patients with either stable disease or partial response had a significantly improved overall survival (median = 253 days) compared with patients who progressed (median = 170 days; P = 0.01). Grade 3/4 (WHO) toxicity (all cycles) included alopecia in 18 (56%) patients, nausea/vomiting in eight (25%) stomatitis in three (9%) and diarrhoea in seven (22%) patients, with rhinorrhoea and excessive lacrimation in one patient each. Neutropenic sepsis occurred in 13 cycles in ten patients, and there was one toxic death due to sepsis. There were eight other episodes of non-neutropenic sepsis requiring hospital admission. Fourteen patients (40%) experienced complications with their Hickman lines, including thrombotic episodes (six patients) or their line falling out (five patients). ECF can prolong survival in patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer who demonstrate a response or stabilisation of their disease. Census of the Local Universe (CLU) Narrow-Band Survey I: Galaxy Catalogs from Preliminary Fields
We present the Census of the Local Universe (CLU) narrow-band survey to
search for emission-line (\ha) galaxies. CLU-\ha~has imaged 3 of
the sky (26,470~deg) with 4 narrow-band filters that probe a distance out
to 200~Mpc. We have obtained spectroscopic follow-up for galaxy candidates in
14 preliminary fields (101.6~deg) to characterize the limits and
completeness of the survey. In these preliminary fields, CLU can identify
emission lines down to an \ha~flux limit of
~ at 90\% completeness, and recovers 83\%
(67\%) of the \ha~flux from catalogued galaxies in our search volume at the
=2.5 (=5) color excess levels. The contamination from galaxies
with no emission lines is 61\% (12\%) for =2.5 (=5). Also, in
the regions of overlap between our preliminary fields and previous
emission-line surveys, we recover the majority of the galaxies found in
previous surveys and identify an additional 300 galaxies. In total, we
find 90 galaxies with no previous distance information, several of which are
interesting objects: 7 blue compact dwarfs, 1 green pea, and a Seyfert galaxy;
we also identified a known planetary nebula. These objects show that the
CLU-\ha~survey can be a discovery machine for objects in our own Galaxy and
extreme galaxies out to intermediate redshifts. However, the majority of the
CLU-\ha~galaxies identified in this work show properties consistent with normal
star-forming galaxies. CLU-\ha~galaxies with new redshifts will be added to
existing galaxy catalogs to focus the search for the electromagnetic

The affect of goserelin on the QoL of women having chemotherapy for EBC: results from the OPTION trial
Background
The OPTION trial results showed that premenopausal women with early stage breast cancer (EBC) receiving chemotherapy benefited from ovarian function protection with goserelin. The impact of treatments on patient reported Quality of Life (QoL) were also examined.
Patients and methods
227 pre-menopausal women with EBC, were randomly assigned to chemotherapy±goserelin (C±G); 132 (58%) were ER-ve. Patients were stratified by age (â€40 years and >40 years). QoL was assessed with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy â Breast, and Endocrine Symptom checklist at baseline (pre-treatment), 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months, then annually to 5 years. Treatment Outcome Index (TOI) score was the primary outcome.
Results
213 patients were available for QoL analysis. There was a significant decrease in TOI scores for both treatment groups at 3 and 6 months that returned to pre-treatment levels at 12 months, then continued to increase reflecting improved QoL. By 3 months there was a significant difference from baseline in both groups for menopausal symptoms, and between groups in the proportion experiencing hot flushes at any time. The C + G group experienced higher levels of vasomotor symptoms generally during the treatment phase; by 24 months, the short-term negative effect of goserelin was reversed, with hot flushes twice as frequent in the chemotherapy only group (40.9% vs 21.3%).
Conclusions
These results show that young women diagnosed with breast cancer experienced only a short-term decrease in QoL from the addition of goserelin, in order to preserve ovarian function during chemotherapy treatment
