    Effect of early glycemic control on HbA1c tracking and development of vascular complications after 5 years of childhood onset type 1 diabetes: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

    OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate if glycemic control measured by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels near diagnosis are predictive of future glycemic outcomes and vascular complications in childhood onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). METHODS: Evidence was gathered using electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, Scopus, and Cochrane Library up to February 2017) and snowballing techniques. Studies investigating the association between the exposure "early glycemic control" and main outcome: "tracking of early control" and secondary outcome: risk of future complications; in children and young people aged 0 to 19 years at baseline; were systematically double-reviewed, quality assessed, and outcome data extracted for synthesis and meta-analysis. FINDINGS: Five studies (N = 4227 participants) were eligible. HbA1c levels were sub-optimal throughout the study period but tended to stabilize in a "track" by 6 months after T1D diagnosis. The group with low HbA1c <53 mmol/mol (<7%) at baseline had lower long-term HbA1c levels than the higher HbA1c group. The estimated standardized mean difference between the sub groups showed a reduction of HbA1c levels on average by 1.6% (range -0.95% to -2.28%) from baseline. Only one study investigated the association between early glycemic control and development of vascular complications in childhood onset T1D. INTERPRETATIONS: Glycemic control after the first few months of childhood onset T1D, remains stable but sub-optimal for a decade. The low and high HbA1c levels at baseline seem to "track" in their respective tracks during the 10-year follow-up, however, the initial difference between groups narrows over time.     The Emergence of Radiation from Gravitational Potential Wells: The Absence of ωM\omega M Effects

    We consider a source of gravitational waves of frequency ω\omega, located near the center of a massive galaxy of mass MM and radius RR, with ω≫R−1\omega\gg R^{-1}. In the case of a perfect fluid galaxy, and of odd-parity waves, there is no direct matter-wave interaction and the propagation of the waves is affected by the galaxy only through the curvature of the spacetime background through which the waves propagate. We find that, in addition to the expected redshift of the radiation emerging from the galaxy, there is a small amount of backscatter, of order M/ω2R3M/\omega^2R^3. We show that there is no suppression of radiative power by the factor 1+ω2M2/41+\omega^2M^2/4 as has been recently predicted by Kundu. The origin of Kundu's suppression lies in the interpretation of a term in the expansion of the exterior field of the galaxy in inverse powers of radius. It is shown why that term is not related to the source strength or to the strength of the emerging radiation.Comment: 29p

    Droplet coalescence is initiated by thermal motion

    The classical notion of the coalescence of two droplets of the same radius R is that surface tension drives an initially singular flow. In this Letter we show, using molecular dynamics simulations of coalescing water nanodroplets, that after single or multiple bridges form due to the presence of thermal capillary waves, the bridge growth commences in a thermal regime. Here, the bridges expand linearly in time much faster than the viscous-capillary speed due to collective molecular jumps near the bridge fronts. Transition to the classical hydrodynamic regime only occurs once the bridge radius exceeds a thermal length scale lT∼√R

    One hundred and five generic types of Pleosporales are described and illustrated. A brief introduction and detailed history with short notes on morphology, molecular phylogeny as well as a general conclusion of each genus are provided. For those genera where the type or a representative specimen is unavailable, a brief note is given. Altogether 174 genera of Pleosporales are treated. Phaeotrichaceae as well as Kriegeriella, Zeuctomorpha and Muroia are excluded from Pleosporales. Based on the multigene phylogenetic analysis, the suborder Massarineae is emended to accommodate five families, viz. Lentitheciaceae, Massarinaceae, Montagnulaceae, Morosphaeriaceae and Trematosphaeriaceae
