Characterisation of a Mobile Jaw Crusher for Small Scale Mining and Construction Industry

    Get PDF
A small jaw crusher with a crushing capacity of 1 ton per hour has been developed for use in the small scale mining and construction industry. A 3.68 kW air cooled diesel engine was installed to power the crusher. Laboratory and field test were conducted using limestone as feed material at different operating parameters. The analysis of the product from the crusher showed that at a constant jaw gap, coarser products were obtained when the rotary speed was varied from 220 rpm to 300 rpm. With a jaw gap of 25 mm, a higher cumulative undersize fraction was obtained at particle size 25 mm. In contrast, at a jaw gap of 15 mm, highercumulative undersize fraction was obtained at particle size 15 mm. With a feed size 80% passing 60 mm, a finer product was obtained as compared to a feed 80% passing 120 mm. The throughput of the machine increased from 0.4 ton/hr to 0.7 ton/hr when the speed was increased from 220 rpm to 300 rpm. It was found that it is possible to select a combination of operating parameters to achieve a particular goal of operation

Theories and stories in African public administration

Public administration in developing countries is administration in transformation. The main concepts that guide this transformation are universal. Yet those concepts are most often presented in Western literature, embedded in Western administrative practice. This book provides an overview of these main concepts seen from a different angle: an African perspective. The general concepts of the study of public administration and public management are illustrated with sub-Saharan African stories, written by Tanzanian scholars. This introductory book can be used to learn and to teach the basic concepts of public administration and public management and aims to prepare the students for the administrative realities they face in their society

Heme metabolism genes Downregulated in COPD Cachexia.

IntroductionCachexia contributes to increased mortality and reduced quality of life in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and may be associated with underlying gene expression changes. Our goal was to identify differential gene expression signatures associated with COPD cachexia in current and former smokers.MethodsWe analyzed whole-blood gene expression data from participants with COPD in a discovery cohort (COPDGene, N = 400) and assessed replication (ECLIPSE, N = 114). To approximate the consensus definition using available criteria, cachexia was defined as weight-loss > 5% in the past 12 months or low body mass index (BMI) (< 20 kg/m2) and 1/3 criteria: decreased muscle strength (six-minute walk distance < 350 m), anemia (hemoglobin < 12 g/dl), and low fat-free mass index (FFMI) (< 15 kg/m2 among women and < 17 kg/m2 among men) in COPDGene. In ECLIPSE, cachexia was defined as weight-loss > 5% in the past 12 months or low BMI and 3/5 criteria: decreased muscle strength, anorexia, abnormal biochemistry (anemia or high c-reactive protein (> 5 mg/l)), fatigue, and low FFMI. Differential gene expression was assessed between cachectic and non-cachectic subjects, adjusting for age, sex, white blood cell counts, and technical covariates. Gene set enrichment analysis was performed using MSigDB.ResultsThe prevalence of COPD cachexia was 13.7% in COPDGene and 7.9% in ECLIPSE. Fourteen genes were differentially downregulated in cachectic versus non-cachectic COPD patients in COPDGene (FDR < 0.05) and ECLIPSE (FDR < 0.05).DiscussionSeveral replicated genes regulating heme metabolism were downregulated among participants with COPD cachexia. Impaired heme biosynthesis may contribute to cachexia development through free-iron buildup and oxidative tissue damage

Fundamentals of human resource management: emerging experiences from Africa

    No full text
The fundamentals of human resource management are extensively described in European and American literature. This book summarises the general human resource management philosophies, theories, strategies and techniques and links them to the specific African context. The usefulness of these general insights of human resource management not only depends on whether or not the organisation is public or private, but also whether they are local or foreign. It also depends on the socio economic and cultural environment. In that regard, current African human resource management practices and techniques are best compared to those of European and American organisations of the 1960s and 1970s. Nevertheless, globalisation has forced managers to learn and adapt to new ways of managing human resources faster than ever before. This book is useful for all students, academics and professionals in human resource management in general and more importantly those who work or are interested in African organisations.ASC – Publicaties niet-programma gebonde

Smallholder Cotton Production in Tanzania: Emerging Issues on Accountability in Kilosa District, Morogoro

    No full text
Traditional cash crop production in Tanzania has been declining with time. While some natural, infrastructure and marketing factors have been known to contribute to low agricultural productivity, reasons related to accountability on the part of officials managing different organs have been little known. This paper discusses emerging accountability issues on the part of government and other service providing institutions as far as cotton production in Kilosa District and more specifically in Malui Village is concerned. A cross-sectional research design that allows collection of information at one point in time was adopted covering several cases. Data for the study were collected through interviews of key informants and farmers, physical observations, documentation and meeting with village government. The emerging findings show that limited access of smallholders to sufficient and fertile land, appropriate farm inputs and reliable markets due to lack of effective accountability on the part of local government, cotton board, cooperatives and private traders has been among the responsible factors for the declining production of cotton. Establishing the right structures and enforcement mechanisms for accountability can disentangle smallholder agriculture from persistent, chronic dissatisfactions of farmers.
