An item's status in semantic memory determines how it is recognized: Dissociable patterns of brain activity observed for famous and unfamiliar faces
Are all faces recognized in the same way, or does previous experience with a face change how it is retrieved? Previous research using human scalp-recorded Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) demonstrates that recognition memory can produce dissociable brain signals under a variety of circumstances. While many studies have reported dissociations between the putative ‘dual processes’ of familiarity and recollection, a growing number of reports demonstrate that recollection itself may be fractionated into component processes. Many recognition memory studies using lexical materials as stimuli have reported a left parietal ERP old/new effect for recollection; however, when unfamiliar faces are recollected, an anterior effect can be observed. This paper addresses two separate hypotheses concerning the functional significance of the anterior old/new effect: perceptual retrieval and semantic status. The perceptual retrieval view is that the anterior effect reflects reinstatement of perceptual information bound up in an episodic representation, while the semantic status view is that information not represented in semantic memory pre-experimentally elicits the anterior effect instead of the left parietal effect. We tested these two competing accounts by investigating recognition memory for unfamiliar faces and famous faces in two separate experiments, in which same or different pictures of studied faces were presented as test items to permit brain activity associated with retrieving face and perceptual information to be examined independently. The difference in neural activity between same and different picture hits was operationalized as a pattern of activation associated with perceptual retrieval; while the contrast between different picture hits and correct rejection of new faces was assumed to reflect face retrieval. In Experiment 1, using unfamiliar faces, the anterior old/new effect (500–700msec) was observed for face retrieval but not for perceptual retrieval, challenging the perceptual retrieval hypothesis. In Experiment 2, using famous faces, face retrieval was associated with a left parietal effect (500–700msec), supporting the semantic representation hypothesis. A between-subjects analysis comparing scalp topography across the two experiments found that the anterior effect observed for unfamiliar faces is dissociable from the left parietal effect found for famous faces. This pattern of results supports the hypothesis that an item's status in semantic memory determines how it is recognized
Large-scale Star Formation Triggering in the Low-mass Arp 82 System: A Nearby Example of Galaxy Downsizing Based on UV/Optical/Mid-IR Imaging
As part of our Spitzer Spirals, Bridges, and Tails project to help understand
the effects of galaxy interactions on star formation, we analyze GALEX
ultraviolet, SARA optical, and Spitzer infrared images of the interacting
galaxy pair Arp 82 (NGC 2535/6) and compare to a numerical simulation of the
interaction. We investigate the multiwavelength properties of several
individual star forming complexes (clumps). Using optical and UV colors,
EW(Halpha), and population synthesis models we constrain the ages of the clumps
and find that the median clump age is about 12 Myr. The clumps have masses
ranging from a few times 10^6 to 10^9 solar masses. In general, the clumps in
the tidal features have similar ages to those in the spiral region, but are
less massive. The 8 micron and 24 micron luminosities are used to estimate the
far-infrared luminosities and the star formation rates of the clumps. The total
clump star formation rate is 2.0+/-0.8 solar masses per year, while the entire
Arp 82 system is forming stars at a rate of 4.9+/-2.0 solar masses per year. We
find, for the first time, stars in the HI arc to the southeast of the NGC 2535
disk. Population synthesis models indicate that all of the observed populations
have young to intermediate ages. We conclude that although the gas disks and
some old stars may have formed early-on, the progenitors are late-type or low
surface brightness and the evolution of these galaxies was halted until the

Variation in ambulance call rates for care homes in Torbay, UK
Emergency ambulance calls represent one of the routes of emergency hospital admissions from
care homes. We aimed to describe the pattern of ambulance call rates from care homes and
identify factors predicting those homes calling for an ambulance most frequently. We obtained
data from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust on 3138 ambulance calls
relating to people aged 65 and over from care homes in the Torbay region between 1/4/12 and
31/7/13. We supplemented this with data from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) website
on home characteristics and outcomes of CQC inspections. We used descriptive statistics to
identify variation in ambulance call rates for residential and nursing homes and fitted negative
binomial regression models to determine if call rates were predicted by home type (nursing
versus residential), the five standards in the CQC reports, dementia care status or travel time to
hospital. One hundred and forty-six homes (119 residential and 27 nursing) were included in
the analysis. The number of calls made ranged from 1 to 99. The median number (IQR; range)
of calls per resident per year was 0.51 (0.21 to 0.89; 0.03 to 2.45). Nursing homes had a lower
call rate than residential homes (adjusted rate ratio (ARR) 0.29; 95% CI: 0.22 to 0.40 ;
p<0.001); care homes failing the quality and suitability of management standard had a lower
call rate compared to those who passed (ARR 0.67; 95% CI: 0.50 to 0.90; p=0.006); and homes
specialising in dementia had a higher call rate compared to those not specialising (ARR 1.56;
95% CI: 1.23 to 1.96; p<0.001). These findings require replication in other regions to establish
their generalisability and further investigation is required to determine the extent to which callrate
variability reflects the different needs of resident populations or differences in care home
policies and practice
Unraveling the Nature of Charge Excitations in LaCuO with Momentum-Resolved Cu -edge Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering
Results of model calculations using exact diagonalization reveal the orbital
character of states associated with different Raman loss peaks in Cu -edge
resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) from LaCuO. The model
includes electronic orbitals necessary to highlight non-local Zhang-Rice
singlet, charge transfer and - excitations, as well as states with apical
oxygen 2 character. The dispersion of these excitations is discussed with
prospects for resonant final state wave-function mapping. A good agreement with
experiments emphasizes the substantial multi-orbital character of RIXS profiles

Controlling pulse propagation in optical fibers through nonlinearity and dispersion management
In case of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with designed group velocity
dispersion, variable nonlinearity and gain/loss; we analytically demonstrate
the phenomenon of chirp reversal crucial for pulse reproduction. Two different
scenarios are exhibited, where the pulses experience identical dispersion
profiles, but show entirely different propagation behavior. Exact expressions
for dynamical quasi-solitons and soliton bound-states relevant for fiber

The intention to hasten death: a survey of attitudes and practices of surgeons in Australia
Objective: To determine attitudes among surgeons in Australia to assisted death, and the proportion of surgeons who have intentionally hastened death with or without an explicit request. Design: Anonymous, cross-sectional, mail-out survey between August and November 1999. Participants: 683 out of 992 eligible general surgeons (68.9% response rate). Main outcome measures: Proportion of respondents answering affirmatively to questions about administering excessive doses of medication with an intention to hasten death. Results: 247 respondents (36.2%; 95% CI, 32.6%-39.9%) reported that, for the purpose of relieving a patient's suffering, they have given drugs in doses that they perceived to be greater than those required to relieve symptoms with the intention of hastening death. More than half of these (139 respondents; 20.4% of all respondents; 95% CI, 17.4%-23.6%) reported that they had never received an unambiguous request for a lethal dose of medication. Of all respondents, only 36 (5.3%; 95% CI, 2.9%-6.1%) reported that they had given a bolus lethal injection, or had provided the means to commit suicide, in response to an unambiguous request. Conclusions: More than a third of surgeons surveyed reported giving drugs with an intention to hasten death, often in the absence of an explicit request. However, in many instances, this may involve the use of an infusion of analgesics or sedatives, and such actions may be difficult to distinguish from accepted palliative care, except on the basis of the doctor's self-reported intention. Legal and moral distinctions based solely on a doctor's intention are problematic

Compartmentalization of Ras proteins
The Ras GTPases operate as molecular switches that link extracellular stimuli with a diverse range of biological outcomes. Although many studies have concentrated on the protein-protein interactions within the complex signaling cascades regulated by Ras, it is becoming clear that the spatial orientation of different Ras isoforms within the plasma membrane is also critical for their function. H-Ras, N-Ras and K-Ras use different membrane anchors to attach to the plasma membrane. Recently it has been shown that these anchors also act as trafficking signals that direct palmitoylated H-Ras and N-Ras through the exocytic pathway to the cell surface but divert polybasic K-Ras around the Golgi to the plasma membrane via an as yet-unidentified-route. Once at the plasma membrane, H-Ras and :K-Ras operate in different microdomains. K-Ras is localized predominantly to the disordered plasma membrane, whereas H-Ras exists in a GTP-regulated equilibrium between disordered plasma membrane and cholesterol-rich lipid rafts. These observations provide a likely explanation for the increasing number of biological differences being identified between the otherwise highly homologous Ras isoforms and raise interesting questions about the role membrane microlocalization plays in determining the interactions of Ras with its effecters and exchange factors
