    Evidence for a temperature-induced spin-state transition of Co3+ in La2-xSrxCoO4

    We study the magnetic susceptibility of mixed-valent La2-xSrxCoO4 single crystals in the doping range of 0.5<= x <= 0.8 for temperatures up to 1000 K. The magnetism below room temperature is described by paramagnetic Co2+ in the high-spin state and by Co3+ in the non-magnetic low-spin state. Above room temperature, an increase in susceptibility compared to the behavior expected from Co2+ is seen, which we attribute to a spin-state transition of Co3+. The susceptibility is analyzed by comparison to full-multiplet calculations for the thermal population of the high- and intermediate-spin states of Co3+

    We present a combined experimental and theoretical x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study of the new class of cobaltates YBaCo4O7 and YBaCo3MO7 (M= Al, Fe). The focus is on the local electronic and magnetic properties of the transition metal ions in these geometrically frustrated kagome compounds. For the mixed valence cobaltate YBaCo4O7, both the Co2+ and Co3+ are found to be in the high spin state. The stability of these high spin states in tetrahedral coordination is compared with those in the more studied case of octahedral coordination. For the new compound YBaCo3FeO7, we find exclusively Co2+ and Fe3+ as charge states

    Differences in intestinal size, structure, and function contributing to feed efficiency in broiler chickens reared at geographically distant locations

    The contribution of the intestinal tract to differences in residual feed intake (RFI) has been inconclusively studied in chickens so far. It is also not clear if RFI-related differences in intestinal function are similar in chickens raised in different environments. The objective was to investigate differences in nutrient retention, visceral organ size, intestinal morphology, jejunal permeability and expression of genes related to barrier function, and innate immune response in chickens of diverging RFI raised at 2 locations (L1: Austria; L2: UK). The experimental protocol was similar, and the same dietary formulation was fed at the 2 locations. Individual BW and feed intake (FI) of chickens (Cobb 500FF) were recorded from d 7 of life. At 5 wk of life, chickens (L1, n = 157; L2 = 192) were ranked according to their RFI, and low, medium, and high RFI chickens were selected (n = 9/RFI group, sex, and location). RFI values were similar between locations within the same RFI group and increased by 446 and 464 g from low to high RFI in females and males, respectively. Location, but not RFI rank, affected growth, nutrient retention, size of the intestine, and jejunal disaccharidase activity. Chickens from L2 had lower total body weight gain and mucosal enzyme activity but higher nutrient retention and longer intestines than chickens at L1. Parameters determined only at L1 showed increased crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum and enhanced paracellular permeability in low vs. high RFI females. Jejunal expression of IL1B was lower in low vs. high RFI females at L2, whereas that of TLR4 at L1 and MCT1 at both locations was higher in low vs. high RFI males. Correlation analysis between intestinal parameters and feed efficiency metrics indicated that feed conversion ratio was more correlated to intestinal size and function than was RFI. In conclusion, the rearing environment greatly affected intestinal size and function, thereby contributing to the variation in chicken RFI observed across locations

    Intraoperative fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery : a double blinded randomised controlled trial

    Background : Perioperative fluid restriction in a variety of operations has shown improvement of: complications, recovery of gastrointestinal function and length of stay (LOS). We investigated effects of crystalloid fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery. Our hypothesis: enhanced recovery of gastrointestinal function. Methods : In this double-blinded randomized trial, patients scheduled to undergo pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) were randomized: standard (S: 10ml/kg/hr) or restricted (R:5ml/kg/hr) fluid protocols. Primary endpoint: gastric emptying scintigraphically assessed on postoperative day 7. Results : In 66 randomized patients, complications and 6-year survival were analyzed. 54 patients were analyzed in intention to treat: 24 S-group and 30 R-group. 32 patients actually underwent a PD and 16 patients had a palliative gastrojejunostomy bypass operation in the full protocol analysis. The median gastric emptying time (T1/2) was 104 minutes (S-group, 95% confidence interval: 74-369) versus 159 minutes (R-group, 95% confidence interval: 61-204) (P = 0.893, NS). Delayed gastric emptying occurred in 10 patients in the S-group and in 13 patients in the R-group (45% and 50%, P = 0.779, NS). The primary outcome parameter, gastric emptying time, did not show a statistically significant difference between groups. Conclusion : A fluid regimen of 10ml/kg/hr or 5ml/kg/hr during pancreatic surgery did not lead to statistically significant differences in gastric emptying. A larger study would be needed to draw definite conclusions about fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery

    Correlation effects in CaCu3Ru4O12

    We have investigated the electronic structure of CaCu3Ru4O12 and LaCu3Ru4O12 using soft x-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy together with band structure and cluster configuration interaction calculations. We found the Cu to be in a robust divalent ionic state while the Ru is more itinerant in character and stabilizes the metallic state. Substitution of Ca by La predominantly affects the Ru states. We observed strong correlation effects in the Cu 3d states affecting the valence band line shape considerably. Using resonant photoelectron spectroscopy at the Cu L3 edge we were able to unveil the position of the Zhang-Rice singlet states in the one-electron removal spectrum of the Cu with respect to the Ru-derived metallic bands in the vicinity of the chemical potential

    Trends and Variability of Surface Solar Radiation in Europe Based On Surface- and Satellite-Based Data Records

    The incoming solar radiation is the essential climate variable that determines the Earth's energy cycle and climate. As long-term high-quality surface measurements of solar radiation are rare, satellite data are used to derive more information on its spatial pattern and its temporal variability. Recently, the EUMETSAT Satellite Application on Climate Monitoring (CM&nbsp;SAF) has published two satellite-based climate data records: Surface Solar Radiation Data Set-Heliosat, Edition 2 (SARAH-2), and Clouds and Radiation Data Set based on AVHRR (advanced very high resolution radiometer) Satellite Measurements, Edition 2 (CLARA-A2). Both data records provide estimates of surface solar radiation. In this study, these new climate data records are compared to surface measurements in Europe during the period 1983\u20132015. SARAH-2 and CLARA-A2 show a high accuracy compared to ground-based observations (mean absolute deviations of 6.9 and 7.3&nbsp;W/m2, respectively) highlighting a good agreement considering the temporal behavior and the spatial distribution. The results show an overall brightening period since the 1980s onward (comprised between 1.9 and 2.4&nbsp;W/m2/decade), with substantial decadal and spatial variability. The strongest brightening is found in eastern Europe in spring. An exception is found for northern and southern Europe, where the trends shown by the station data are not completely reproduced by satellite data, especially in summer in southern Europe. We conclude that the major part of the observed trends in surface solar radiation in Europe is caused by changes in clouds and that remaining differences between the satellite- and the station-based data might be connected to changes in the direct aerosol effect and in snow cover

    Anisotropic Susceptibility of La_2-xSr_xCoO_4 related to the Spin States of Cobalt

    We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility of La_2-xSr_xCoO_4 single crystals in a doping range 0.3<=x<=0.8. Our data shows a pronounced magnetic anisotropy for all compounds. This anisotropy is in agreement with a low-spin ground state (S=0) of Co^3+ for x>=0.4 and a high-spin ground state (S=3/2) of Co^2+. We compare our data with a crystal-field model calculation assuming local moments and find a good description of the magnetic behavior for x>=0.5. This includes the pronounced kinks observed in the inverse magnetic susceptibility, which result from the anisotropy and low-energy excited states of Co^2+ and are not related to magnetic ordering or temperature-dependent spin-state transitions

    Orbital order in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4: beyond a common local Jahn-Teller picture

    The standard way to find the orbital occupation of Jahn-Teller (JT) ions is to use structural data, with the assumption of a one-to-one correspondence between the orbital occupation and the associated JT distortion, e.g. in O6 octahedron. We show, however, that this approach in principle does not work for layered systems. Specifically, using the layered manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 as an example, we found from our x-ray absorption measurements and theoretical calculations, that the type of orbital ordering strongly contradicts the standard local distortion approach for the Mn3+O6 octahedra, and that the generally ignored long-range crystal field effect and anisotropic hopping integrals are actually crucial to determine the orbital occupation. Our findings may open a pathway to control of the orbital state in multilayer systems and thus of their physical properties.Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figure
