The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in the Management of a Playwork Setting.
Our philosophy, as a manager and former manager of playwork settings, is that the most important resource in the setting is the people involved within it. James has managed a playwork setting for four years and Angela has managed a range of play settings during her twenty year career. At the beginning of our careers, we both believed that acquiring experience and knowledge of children and associated theory was the key to effective training and development. However as our careers developed, our opinions changed. Goleman’s (1996) work on Emotional Intelligence has had a significant impact on how James leads and supports his playwork team, and in this article we reflect on how an appreciation of emotional intelligence may produce more effective playwork practitioner
Reference amounts utilised in front of package nutrition labelling:impact on product healthfulness evaluations
Background/Objectives: The research question addressed in this paper is how different reference amounts utilised in front of package nutrition labelling influence evaluation of product healthfulness. Subjects/Methods: A total of 13 117 participants from six European countries (Germany, UK, Spain, France, Poland and Sweden) were recruited via online panels. A mixed between/within-subject factorial design was employed with food (biscuits, sandwiches, yogurts), healthfulness and presence of Guideline Daily Amounts as within-subjects factors and reference amount (‘per 100 g’, ‘typical portion’, ‘half portion’) and country as between-subjects factors. Results: Overall, people correctly ranked foods according to their objective healthfulness as defined by risk nutrients alone, and could distinguish between more and less healthful variants of foods. General healthfulness associations with the three product categories do not appear to have had a strong influence on product ratings. This study shows that where the reference amount of ‘per 100 g’ is very different from the ‘typical’ portion size, as was the case for biscuits, products with a ‘per 100 g’ label are rated significantly less healthful than the ‘typical’ or ‘half typical’ portions. Conclusion: The results indicate that across the three food categories, consumers do factor the reference amount, that is, the quantity of food for which the nutritional information is being presented, into their judgements of healthfulness. Therefore, appropriate reference amounts are also of importance for the effective presentation of nutritional information
Research Issues Surrounding Holocaust Survivors: Adaptability and Aging
The thesis of this article is that, in spite of a large body of literature on the subject, a significant need exists for sociological research on the long-term consequences of the trauma experienced by survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Most of what is known about the adjustment of Holocaust survivors is based upon limited case histories of survivors who sought psychiatric aid, or requested assistance in qualifying for indemnification payments from the German government. The social and psychological dynamics of successful adjustment to life after the traumatic Holocaust experience by the majority of survivors has largely been ignored. Reasons for this oversight are discussed, and several areas of further research are suggested

Community rotorcraft air transportation benefits and opportunities
Information about rotorcraft that will assist community planners in assessing and planning for the use of rotorcraft transportation in their communities is provided. Information useful to helicopter researchers, manufacturers, and operators concerning helicopter opportunities and benefits is also given. Three primary topics are discussed: the current status and future projections of rotorcraft technology, and the comparison of that technology with other transportation vehicles; the community benefits of promising rotorcraft transportation opportunities; and the integration and interfacing considerations between rotorcraft and other transportation vehicles. Helicopter applications in a number of business and public service fields are examined in various geographical settings
Supporting parents with empathy and compassion
The aim of this article is to provide guidance and strategies for professionals working with children and families during the current cost-of-living crisis. Currently, there are many families living in poverty in the UK and around the world and the need for support is significantly higher than it has been for decades. Professionals working with children and families are in a good position to support families, so we give practical advice on ways to do this. An important underlying principle is to do so with empathy and compassion, which is something that professionals in the early childhood field are skilled in demonstrating. A consequence of this emotion work is the impact on professionals, the emotional burden often resulting in stress or burnout. Early childhood settings need to ensure that they are doing all they can to support those who are supporting others
