    The entrainnient of solid particles into rolling elastohydrodynamic contacts

    The entry of lubricant borne solid particles into machine element contacts is important, both for prediction of three body abrasive vear, and for an understanding of the behaviour of solid lubricant additives. This paper describes a quantitative study of particle entrainmcnt into a rolling elastohydrodynamic contact. The level of surface indentation is used as an indication of the number of particles entrained into the contact. It is shown that over the range of test conditions considered; concentrations of particles in the contact can be many times higher than those in the bulk, larger particles are more likely to become entrained, and at higher speed less particles of all sizes become entrained. © 1996 Elsevier Science B.V.     Impact of Formulation and Slurry Properties on Lithium-ion Electrode Manufacturing

    The characteristics and performance of lithium-ion batteries typically rely on the precise combination of materials in their component electrodes. Understanding the impact of this formulation and the interdependencies between each component is critical in optimising cell performance. Such optimisation is difficult as the cost and effort for the myriad of possible combinations is too high. This problem is addressed by combining a design of experiments (DoE) and advanced statistical machine learning approach with comprehensive experimental characterisation of electrode slurries and coatings. An industry relevant graphite anode system is used, and with the aid of DoE, less than 30 experiments are defined to map impact of different weight fractions of active material (80–96 wt%), conductive additive (Carbon Black at 1–10 wt%) and a two-component binder system (Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) at 1–3 wt% and Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), at 1–7 wt%). Using Explainable Machine Learning (XML) methods, correlations between the formulation, slurry weight percentage (30–50 wt% in water) and coating speed (1–15 m/min) are quantified. Slurry viscosity, while known to depend on the CMC concentration, is also heavily influenced by carbon black and SBR when at high concentration, as is common in research. Viscosity increasing components also improve adhesion, by improving dispersion and hindering binder migration. Conductivity of the coating on current collector is sensitive to the current collector-coating interface, which makes it a highly useful probe. Improvements in cell capacity are observed with higher viscosity formulations (High weight percentage, CMC content), attributed to reduction in migration and slumping of the slurry on the current collector. SBR had a negative impact at any concentration due to its insulating nature, and carbon black reduces gravimetric capacity when included at high concentrations. The insights from this study facilitate the formulation optimisation of electrodes providing improved slurry design rules for future high performance electrode manufacturing

    “Full factorial design of experiments dataset for parallel-connected lithium-ion cells imbalanced performance investigation”

    This paper shares an experimental dataset of lithium-ion battery parallel-connected modules. The campaign, conducted at the Stanford Energy Control Laboratory, employs a comprehensive full factorial Design of Experiment methodology on ladder-configured parallel strings. A total of 54 test conditions were investigated under various operating temperatures, cell-to-cell interconnection resistance, cell chemistry, and aging levels. The module-level testing procedure involved Constant Current Constant Voltage (CC-CV) charging and Constant Current (CC) discharge. Beyond monitoring total module current and voltage, Hall sensors and thermocouples were employed to measure the signals from each individual cell to quantify both current and temperature distribution within each tested module configuration. Additionally, the dataset contains cell characterization data for every cell (i.e. NCA Samsung INR21700-50E and NMC LG-Chem INR21700-M50T) used in the module-level experiments. This dataset provides valuable resources for developing battery physics-based, empirical, and data-driven models at single cell and module level. Ultimately, it contributes to advance our understanding of how cell-to-cell heterogeneity propagates within the module and how that affects the overall system performance

    Scale-up of lithium iron phosphate cathodes with high active materials contents for lithium ion cells

    The size of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode mix was increased by a factor of thirty, and the capacity of the cells produced with it by a factor of three-hundred. As well as rate and cycling tests, the coatings were also characterised for adhesion and resistivity. The adhesion and total through-plane resistance were both dependent on the drying conditions during coating. The discharge capacities at high rates and the pulse resistances showed much less influence from the drying temperature. The mix formulation contained 97 wt% LFP, and was based on an earlier design of experiments (DoE) study, using relatively high active material contents. Overall, the mix exceeded the performance predicted by the modelling study

    Optimisation of industrially relevant electrode formulations for LFP cathodes in lithium ion cells

    The electrode formulation has a significant effect on the performance of lithium ion cells. The active material, binder, and conductive carbon all have different roles, and finding the optimum composition can be difficult using an iterative approach. In this study, a design of experiment (DoE) methodology is applied to the optimisation of a cathode based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP). The minimum LFP content in the electrodes is 94 wt%. Seventeen mixes are used to evaluate adhesion, resistivity, and electrochemical performance. The coating adhesion increases with binder content, and the coating conductivity increases with carbon nano-tube content. The best coatings achieve 5C:0.2C capacity ratios above 50%, despite the relatively high coat weight. Models based on just the component mixture do not replicate the discharge capacities at high rates. However, a combined mixture + process model can fit the data, and is used to predict an optimum formulation

    BACKGROUND: There are limited data on the risks of obstetric complications among survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer with most previous studies only reporting risks for all types of cancers combined. The aim of this study was to quantify deficits in birth rates and risks of obstetric complications for female survivors of 17 specific types of adolescent and young adult cancer.METHODS: The Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Survivor Study (TYACSS)-a retrospective, population-based cohort of 200 945 5-year survivors of cancer diagnosed at age 15-39 years from England and Wales-was linked to the English Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database from April 1, 1997, to March 31, 2022. The cohort included 17 different types of adolescent and young adult cancers. We ascertained 27 specific obstetric complications through HES among 96 947 women in the TYACSS cohort. Observed and expected numbers for births and obstetric complications were compared between the study cohort and the general population of England to identify survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer at a heighted risk of birth deficits and obstetric complications relative to the general population.FINDINGS: Between April 1, 1997, and March 31, 2022, 21 437 births were observed among 13 886 female survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer from England, which was lower than expected (observed-to-expected ratio: 0·68, 95% CI 0·67-0·69). Other survivors of genitourinary, cervical, and breast cancer had under 50% of expected births. Focusing on more common (observed ≄100) obstetric complications that were at least moderately in excess (observed-to-expected ratio ≄1·25), survivors of cervical cancer were at risk of malpresentation of fetus, obstructed labour, amniotic fluid and membranes disorders, premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth, placental disorders including placenta praevia, and antepartum haemorrhage. Survivors of leukaemia were at risk of preterm delivery, obstructed labour, postpartum haemorrhage, and retained placenta. Survivors of all other specific cancers had no more than two obstetric complications that exceeded an observed-to-expected ratio of 1·25 or greater.INTERPRETATION: Survivors of cervical cancer and leukaemia are at risk of several serious obstetric complications; therefore, any pregnancy should be considered high-risk and would benefit from obstetrician-led antenatal care. Despite observing deficits in birth rates across all 17 different types of adolescent and young adult cancer, we provide reassurance for almost all survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer concerning their risk of almost all obstetric complications. Our results provide evidence for the development of clinical guidelines relating to counselling and surveillance of obstetrical risk for female survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer.FUNDING: Children with Cancer UK, The Brain Tumour Charity, and Academy of Medical Sciences.</p

    Risk of subsequent primary lymphoma in a cohort of 69,460 five-year survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer in Europe: The PanCareSurFup study.

    BACKGROUND Survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) after treatment; however, the risks of developing subsequent primary lymphomas (SPLs), including HL and NHL, after different types of childhood cancer are unknown. The authors quantified the risk of SPLs using the largest cohort of childhood cancer survivors worldwide. METHODS The Pan-European Network for Care of Survivors After Childhood and Adolescent Cancer (PanCare) Survivor Care and Follow-Up Studies (PanCareSurFup) cohort includes 69,460 five-year survivors of childhood cancer, diagnosed during 1940 through 2008, from 12 European countries. Risks of SPLs were quantified by standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and relative risks (RRs) using multivariable Poisson regression. RESULTS Overall, 140 SPLs, including 104 NHLs and 36 HLs, were identified. Survivors were at 60% increased risk of an SPL compared with the general population (SIR, 1.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4-1.9). Survivors were twice as likely to develop NHL (SIR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.9-2.8), with the greatest risks among survivors of HL (SIR, 7.1; 95% CI, 5.1-10.0), Wilms tumor (SIR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.7-5.7), leukemia (SIR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.8-4.4), and bone sarcoma (SIR, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.4-5.4). Treatment with chemotherapy for any cancer doubled the RR of NHL (RR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.2-3.9), but treatment with radiotherapy did not (RR, 1.2; 95% CI, 0.7-2.0). Survivors were at similar risk of developing a subsequent HL as the general population (SIR, 1.1; 95% CI, 0.8-1.5). CONCLUSIONS In addition to HL, the authors show here for the first time that survivors of Wilms tumor, leukemia, and bone sarcoma are at risk of NHL. Survivors and health care professionals should be aware of the risk of NHL in these survivors and in any survivors treated with chemotherapy
