    Analyzing the Evolution of Vocabulary Terms and Their Impact on the LOD Cloud

    Vocabularies are used for modeling data in Knowledge Graphs (KGs) like the Linked Open Data Cloud and Wikidata. During their lifetime, vocabularies are subject to changes. New terms are coined, while existing terms are modified or deprecated. We first quantify the amount and frequency of changes in vocabularies. Subsequently, we investigate to which extend and when the changes are adopted in the evolution of KGs. We conduct our experiments on three large-scale KGs: the Billion Triples Challenge datasets, the Dynamic Linked Data Observatory dataset, and Wikidata. Our results show that the change frequency of terms is rather low, but can have high impact due to the large amount of distributed graph data on the web. Furthermore, not all coined terms are used and most of the deprecated terms are still used by data publishers. The adoption time of terms coming from different vocabularies ranges from very fast (few days) to very slow (few years). Surprisingly, we could observe some adoptions before the vocabulary changes were published. Understanding the evolution of vocabulary terms is important to avoid wrong assumptions about the modeling status of data published on the web, which may result in difficulties when querying the data from distributed sources

    Providing Alternative Declarative Descriptions for Entity Sets Using Parallel Concept Lattices

    We propose an approach for modifying a declarative description of a set of entities (e.g., a SPARQL query) for the purpose of finding alternative declarative descriptions for the entities. Such a shift in representation can help to get new insights into the data, to discover related attributes, or to find a more concise description of the entities of interest. Allowing the alternative descriptions furthermore to be close approximations of the original entity set leads to more flexibility in finding such insights. Our approach is based on the construction of parallel formal concept lattices over different sets of attributes for the same entities. Between the formal concepts in the parallel lattices, we define mappings which constitute approximations of the extent of the concepts. In this paper, we formalise the idea of two types of mappings between parallel concept lattices, provide an implementation of these mappings and evaluate their ability to find alternative descriptions in a scenario of several real-world RDF data sets. In this scenario we use descriptions for entities based on RDF classes and seek for alternative representations based on properties associated with the entities

    Bamboo reinforced concrete: a critical review

The use of small diameter whole-culm (bars) and/or split bamboo (a.k.a. splints or round strips) has often been proposed as an alternative to relatively expensive reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete. The motivation for such replacement is typically cost—bamboo is readily available in many tropical and sub-tropical locations, whereas steel reinforcement is relatively more expensive—and more recently, the drive to find more sustainable alternatives in the construction industry. This review addresses such ‘bamboo-reinforced concrete’ and assesses its structural and environmental performance as an alternative to steel reinforced concrete. A prototype three bay portal frame, that would not be uncommon in regions of the world where bamboo-reinforced concrete may be considered, is used to illustrate bamboo reinforced concrete design and as a basis for a life cycle assessment of the same. The authors conclude that, although bamboo is a material with extraordinary mechanical properties, its use in bamboo-reinforced concrete is an ill-considered concept, having significant durability, strength and stiffness issues, and does not meet the environmentally friendly credentials often attributed to it

    Skeletal abnormalities of acrogeria, a progeroid syndrome

    We report the skeletal abnormalities in a 4 1/2-year-old boy with acrogeria, a progeroid syndrome of premature aging of the skin without the involvement of internal organs seen in Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. Acro-osteolysis of the distal phalanges, delayed cranial suture closure with wormian bones, linear lucent defects of the metaphyses, and antegonial notching of the mandible are the predominant skeletal features of the disorder.     Effect of water polo practice on cytokines, growth mediators, and leukocytes in girls

    PURPOSE: The effects of exercise on growth and development are mediated through a complex interaction between the endocrine, immune, and nervous systems. Very little is known about how these systems respond to exercise in children or adolescents. Moreover, there are few studies that have examined growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, and leukocyte responses to "real-life" or field exercise solely in girls. Thus, the goal of the present study was to determine the acute exercise-induced alterations in the growth hormone --> insulin-like growth factor-I axis, inflammatory cytokines, and certain aspects of immune function in a group of adolescent girls after a typical water polo practice. METHODS: Ten, healthy, high-school female subjects, 14-16 yr old, performed a single, typical, 1.5-h water polo practice session. Blood was sampled before and after the session. RESULTS: The exercise resulted in an increase in HR (from 82 +/- 2 to 161 +/- 5 beats.min(-1) at 30 min, P < 1.4.10(-6) ), as well as in circulating lactate levels (375 +/- 66%, P < 0.0005). Significant increases where noted in circulating IL-6 (396 +/- 162%, P < 0.005) and IL-1ra (71 +/- 20%, P < 0.015). A substantial increase in the level of IGFBP-1 (1344 +/- 344%, P < 0.001) was also observed. Interestingly, TNF-alpha levels decreased after the exercise (-10.4 +/- 3.8%, P < 0.04) as did insulin (55 +/- 12%, P < 0.005). The exercise led to significant increases in granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes. The exercise significantly influenced adhesion molecules (such as CD62L and CD54), which has not been previously studied in adolescent girls. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that an intense "real-life" exercise bout in adolescent females leads to profound increases in inflammatory cytokines and reductions in anabolic mediators with substantial alterations in white blood cell subpopulations and adhesion molecules. The role of these frequent, almost daily immune and cytokine changes on growth and development have yet to be determined
