Caste, Kinship, and Life Course: Rethinking Women's Work and Agency in Rural South India
This paper reexamines the linkages between women's work, agency, and well-being based on a household survey and in-depth interviews conducted in rural Tamil Nadu in 2009 and questions the prioritization of workforce participation as a path to gender equality. It emphasizes the need to unpack the nature of work performed by and available to women and its social valuation, as well as women's agency, particularly its implications for decision making around financial and nonfinancial household resources in contexts of socioeconomic change. The effects of work participation on agency are mediated by factors like age and stage in the life cycle, reproductive success, and social location – especially of caste – from which women enter the workforce

Complexes of bifunctional DO3A-N-(α-amino)propinate ligands with Mg(II), Ca(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and lanthanide(III) ions: thermodynamic stability, formation and dissociation kinetics, and solution dynamic NMR studies
The thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural properties of Ln3+ complexes with the bifunctional DO3A-ACE4− ligand and its amide derivative DO3A-BACE4− (modelling the case where DO3A-ACE4− ligand binds to vector molecules) have been studied in order to confirm the usefulness of the corresponding Gd3+ complexes as relaxation labels of targeted MRI contrast agents. The stability constants of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ complexes of DO3A-ACE4− and DO3A-BACE4− complexes are lower than for DOTA4− and DO3A3−, while the Zn2+ and Cu2+ complexes have similar and higher stability than for DOTA4− and DO3A3− complexes. The stability constants of the Ln(DO3A-BACE)− complexes increase from Ce3+ to Gd3+ but remain practically constant for the late Ln3+ ions (represented by Yb3+). The stability constants of the Ln(DO3A-ACE)4− and Ln(DO3A-BACE)4− complexes are several orders of magnitude lower than those of the corresponding DOTA4− and DO3A3− complexes. The formation rate of Eu(DO3A-ACE)− is one order of magnitude slower than for Eu(DOTA)−, due to the presence of the protonated amine group, which destabilizes the protonated intermediate complex. This protonated group causes the Ln(DO3A-ACE)− complexes to dissociate several orders of magnitude faster than Ln(DOTA)− and its absence in the Ln(DO3A-BACE)− complexes results in inertness similar to Ln(DOTA)− (as judged by the rate constants of acid assisted dissociation). The 1H NMR spectra of the diamagnetic Y(DO3A-ACE)− and Y(DO3A-BACE)− reflect the slow dynamics at low temperatures of the intramolecular isomerization process between the SA pair of enantiomers, R-Λ(λλλλ) and S-Δ(δδδδ). The conformation of the Cα-substituted pendant arm is different in the two complexes, where the bulky substituent is further away from the macrocyclic ring in Y(DO3A-BACE)− than the amino group in Y(DO3A-ACE)− to minimize steric hindrance. The temperature dependence of the spectra reflects slower ring motions than pendant arms rearrangements in both complexes. Although losing some thermodynamic stability relative to Gd(DOTA)−, Gd(DO3A-BACE)− is still quite inert, indicating the usefulness of the bifunctional DO3A-ACE4− in the design of GBCAs and Ln3+-based tags for protein structural NMR analysis.This research was funded by the Hungarian National Research, Development and Innovation Office (Projects NKFIH K-128201, K-134694, and FK-134551)
Formation of partnerships among young women and men in Pune district, Maharashtra
Young people in India face traditional age- and sex-stratified norms that espouse gender double standards. Premarital partnerships are taboo and anecdotal evidence suggests that in many settings in India, the hint of a romantic relationship or even social interaction between young girls and boys is sufficient to damage a family\u27s reputation and/or result in accelerated arranged marriage, particularly for the girl. While there is a prevailing perception at the community level that in these circumstances, premarital partnerships are rare, there is a small body of literature that suggests that such partnerships are indeed formed and sexual relations experienced, among, typically, fewer than 10 percent of young women and 15–30 percent of young men. At the same time, little is known about the lives of young people and the contexts in which they form romantic, marital, and other partnerships. Web Application for Atmospheric Aerosol Data Management: Software and Case Study in the Spanish Network on Environmental Differential Mobility Analysers
[Abstract] SCALA© (Sampling Campaigns for Aerosols in the Low Atmosphere) is a web-based software system that was developed in a multidisciplinary manner to integrally support the documentation and the management and analysis of atmospheric aerosol data from sampling campaigns. The software development process applied considered the prototyping and the evolutionary approaches. The software product (SCALA©) allows for the comprehensive management of the sampling campaigns’ life cycle (management of the profiles and processes involved in the start-up, development and closure of a campaign) and provides support for both intra- and inter-campaigns data analysis. The pilot deployment of SCALA© considers the Spanish Network on Environmental Differential Mobility Analysers (DMAs) (REDMAAS) and the PROACLIM project. This research project involves, among other objectives, the study of temporal and spatial variations of the atmospheric aerosol through a set of microphysical properties (size distribution, optical properties, hygroscopicity, etc.) measured in several locations in Spain. The main conclusions regarding size distribution are presented in this work. Classification of Radiologically Isolated Syndrome and Clinically Isolated Syndrome with Machine-Learning Techniques
Background and purpose: The unanticipated detection by magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) in the brain of asymptomatic subjects of white matter lesions
suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been named radiologically isolated
syndrome (RIS). As the difference between early MS [i.e. clinically isolated
syndrome (CIS)] and RIS is the occurrence of a clinical event, it is logical to
improve detection of the subclinical form without interfering with MRI as there
are radiological diagnostic criteria for that. Our objective was to use
machine-learning classification methods to identify morphometric measures that
help to discriminate patients with RIS from those with CIS.
Methods: We used a multimodal 3-T MRI approach by combining MRI biomarkers
(cortical thickness, cortical and subcortical grey matter volume, and white
matter integrity) of a cohort of 17 patients with RIS and 17 patients with CIS
for single-subject level classification.
Results: The best proposed models to predict the diagnosis of CIS and RIS
were based on the Naive Bayes, Bagging and Multilayer Perceptron classifiers
using only three features: the left rostral middle frontal gyrus volume and the
fractional anisotropy values in the right amygdala and right lingual gyrus. The
Naive Bayes obtained the highest accuracy [overall classification, 0.765; area
under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC), 0.782].
Conclusions: A machine-learning approach applied to multimodal MRI data may
differentiate between the earliest clinical expressions of MS (CIS and RIS)
with an accuracy of 78%.

La apolipoproteína A-I (apoAI) es la proteína mayoritaria de las lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) a las que se les atribuye un rol antiaterogénico, en especial por su participación en el transporte del exceso de colesterol desde tejidos periféricos hacia el hígado para su catabolismo y eliminación. ApoAI está constituida por hélices anfipáticas que en agua forman un ramillete de estructura terciaria poco definida o glóbulo fundido; y que en función de la concentración se autoagrega para formar dímeros y oligómeros de diferente tamaño.
