The scale of homogeneity in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey
We analyse the Las Campanas Redshift Survey using the integrated conditional
density (or density of neighbors) in volume-limited subsamples up to
unprecedented scales (200 Mpc/) in order to determine without ambiguity the
behavior of the density field. We find that the survey is well described by a
fractal up to 20-30 Mpc/, but flattens toward homogeneity at larger scales.
Although the data are still insufficient to establish with high significance
the expected homogeneous behavior, and therefore to rule out a fractal trend to
larger scales, a fit with a CDM-like spectrum with high normalization well
represents the data.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted on Ap.J. Letter
From Golden Spirals to Constant Slope Surfaces
In this paper, we find all constant slope surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space,
namely those surfaces for which the position vector of a point of the surface
makes constant angle with the normal at the surface in that point. These
surfaces could be thought as the bi-dimensional analogue of the generalized
helices. Some pictures are drawn by using the parametric equations we found.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Constructing an Ecology of Foster Care: An Analysis of the Entry and Exit Patterns of Foster Homes
This paper aims to illustrate the viability of using concepts and theoretical arguments from organization ecology to analyze dynamic change processes in foster care. The general topic is the relationship between foster homes and their environments. The specific focus is the effects of the environment on the entry and exit patterns of new foster homes. Drawing on our earlier studies of the 23 year history of a population of foster homes, various hypotheses shown to have validity in accounting for the processes underlying the founding and disbanding offormal organizations, also apply in the case of the entry and exit processes offoster homes. One important contribution of this paper is in re-asserting the role of theory in studying foster care, and in helping organize existing knowledge. A second contribution is in reminding us that foster homes should be conceptualized and studied as existing in relation to their social context. They are embedded in social and organizational communities, and the nature of this embeddedness has important implications not only for understanding their behavior but also for how they should be approached in policy terms
On a computer-aided approach to the computation of Abelian integrals
An accurate method to compute enclosures of Abelian integrals is developed.
This allows for an accurate description of the phase portraits of planar
polynomial systems that are perturbations of Hamiltonian systems. As an
example, it is applied to the study of bifurcations of limit cycles arising
from a cubic perturbation of an elliptic Hamiltonian of degree four
Perceived Community Cohesion and the Stress Process in Youth
Using survey data from two youth samples, one rural and one urban, we examine the role and significance of perceived community cohesion in the stress process. In particular, we assess the extent to which community attachment and detachment are related to depressed mood, problem substance use, and delinquency net of social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes. In addition, we explore the degree to which those dimensions of community cohesion explain or condition the links between the above stress-process components (e.g., social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes) and well-being. We find remarkably similar results across samples: community attachment is related to lower odds of problem substance use and delinquency; community detachment is related to higher levels of depressed mood, problem substance use, and delinquency; and community attachment buffers the link between stress and problem substance use. With respect to depressed mood, however, the rural youth show greater vulnerability to stress than the urban youth and unique benefits from community attachment compared to the latter. Our findings highlight the roles of community attachment and detachment in the stress process and underscore the importance of each for youth well-being in rural and urban settings

An axially symmetric solution of metric-affine gravity
We present an exact stationary {\it axially symmetric} vacuum solution of
metric-affine gravity (MAG) which generalises the recently reported spherically
symmetric solution. Besides the metric, it carries nonmetricity and torsion as
post-Riemannian geometrical structures. The parameters of the solution are
interpreted as mass and angular momentum and as dilation, shear and spin
charges.Comment: 5 pages, RevTe
Non-Riemannian Gravity and the Einstein-Proca System
We argue that all Einstein-Maxwell or Einstein-Proca solutions to general
relativity may be used to construct a large class of solutions (involving
torsion and non-metricity) to theories of non-Riemannian gravitation that have
been recently discussed in the literature.Comment: 9 pages Plain Tex (No Figures), Letter to Editor Classical and
