Extortion and Evolution in the Iterated Prisoner\u27s Dilemma

    Get PDF
The Prisoner\u27s Dilemma is a two player game where playing rationally leads to a suboptimal outcome for both players. The game is simple to analyze, but when it is played repeatedly, complex dynamics emerge. Recent research has shown the existence of extortionate strategies, which allow one player to win at least as much as the other. When one player plays such a strategy, the other must either decide to take a low payoff, or accede to the extortion, where they earn higher payoff, but their opponent receives a larger share. We investigate what happens when one player uses this strategy against an ``evolutionary\u27\u27 player, who makes small changes to her strategy over time to increase her score, and show that there are cases where such a player will not evolve towards the optimal strategy of giving in to extortion

Induction of PEP Carboxylase and Crassulacean Acid Metabolism by Gibberellic Acid in Mesembryanthemum crystallinum

    Get PDF
The induction of Crassulacean acid metabolism in Mesembryanthemum crystallinum was investigated in response to foliar application of gibberellic acid (GA). After 5 weeks of treatment, GA-treated plants showed 1.7- to almost a 4-fold increase of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPcase) activity with a concomitant increase in acid metabolism when compared to control plants. Immunoblot analysis indicated an increase in the PEPcase protein similar to that of salt treatment while Rubisco did not show a similar rise. The results indicate that exogenously applied GA accelerates plant developmental expression of PEPcase and Crassulacean acid metabolism in M. crystallinum

The Cost of Producing Canning Peas in Utah 1945-1961

    Get PDF
Since 1946, the cost of producing canning peas has been investigated on a continuing basis by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. The original comprehensive study was made in 1946. A second study was completed in 1951. The most recent study was made in 1961. In between the major studies annual costs of production have been calculated

Cost of Raising Dairy Heifers in Northern Utah

    Get PDF
Dairymen have a continuing problem in maintaining herd size. Disease, injuries, and low production, make it necessary for them to cull animals from their herds. Replacements equal to a complete herd turnover are necessary every two to six years. Consequently, many are wondering as to the most profitable practice to supply the needed replacements in the herd. Three alternatives are available: Dairymen can produce herd replacements. They can purchase either heifers or cows. They can contract with growers specializing in raising heifers to provide replacements. Since all dairy enterprises differ to some degree, each dairyman should seek a specific solution to his herd replacement problem

The Pussy Hat: An intersection between needlework, feminism, and identity

    Get PDF
On January 21, 2017, over one million individuals participated in the Women\u27s March on Washington. Media coverage noted the strong collective visual statement created by a sea of bright pink pussyhats with top corners resembling cat ears. The purpose of this study was to employ Identity Theory to explore the making and wearing of pussyhats as a weapon of resistance for women (Parker, 1984, Introduction). Content analysis of 40 mainstream news articles and editorials between November 8, 2016 and March 8, 2017 revealed a notable frequency of specific terms occurring more than ten times. These terms were aligned with the three enabling factors of identity salience: esteem, social connections, and media connections/visibility. Results indicate the presence of an identity where needlearts and feminism intersect. Making and wearing the pussyhat demonstrates an ever-evolving concept of feminism, which holistically encompasses the wide range of expressions and activities available to contemporary women

Professors’ perspectives on truth-seeking and new literacy

    Get PDF
New media and new literacy are essential in our contemporary paradigms of education and communication research. Though truth-seeking is one of the primary objectives inherent in higher education, the process for students may be less clear than it may be for trained academics or professors. The current study sought to explore how professors recommend that students seek truth in the information age. Relying on an assignment from a communication course, this study examined responses from student-led interviews with professors from across the U.S. and categorized trends in their recommendations for students. Overall twelve themes taken from advice on student truth-seeking emerged from the professors’ responses. We couch these findings in the current internet era that is faced with overwhelming amounts of information, channels, problems of misinformation, and the spreading of false stories via social media. Conclusions center around the need for new literacy and new media awareness
