Polyelectrolyte Multilayering on a Charged Planar Surface
The adsorption of highly \textit{oppositely} charged flexible
polyelectrolytes (PEs) on a charged planar substrate is investigated by means
of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We study in detail the equilibrium structure
of the first few PE layers. The influence of the chain length and of a (extra)
non-electrostatic short range attraction between the polycations and the
negatively charged substrate is considered. We show that the stability as well
as the microstructure of the PE layers are especially sensitive to the strength
of this latter interaction. Qualitative agreement is reached with some recent

Soft repulsive mixtures under gravity: brazil-nut effect, depletion bubbles, boundary layering, nonequilibrium shaking
A binary mixture of particles interacting via long-ranged repulsive forces is
studied in gravity by computer simulation and theory. The more repulsive
A-particles create a depletion zone of less repulsive B-particles around them
reminiscent to a bubble. Applying Archimedes' principle effectively to this
bubble, an A-particle can be lifted in a fluid background of B-particles. This
"depletion bubble" mechanism explains and predicts a brazil-nut effect where
the heavier A-particles float on top of the lighter B-particles. It also
implies an effective attraction of an A-particle towards a hard container
bottom wall which leads to boundary layering of A-particles. Additionally, we
have studied a periodic inversion of gravity causing perpetual mutual
penetration of the mixture in a slit geometry. In this nonequilibrium case of
time-dependent gravity, the boundary layering persists. Our results are based
on computer simulations and density functional theory of a two-dimensional
binary mixture of colloidal repulsive dipoles. The predicted effects also occur
for other long-ranged repulsive interactions and in three spatial dimensions.
They are therefore verifiable in settling experiments on dipolar or charged
colloidal mixtures as well as in charged granulates and dusty plasmas.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
An Exploratory Investigation of Comparisons of Student Evaluations of Learning Pre and Post COVID-19 at Private and Public Universities
Although universities attempted to provide as little disruption to student learning as possible, problems arose with their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current literature is rich with studies reporting experiences with the transition to the virtual learning of the pandemic era. In pursuit of the most effective learning and instructional modes to transition to in times of crisis, university administrators and faculty members need to know more regarding what worked and did not work in the initial response to the COVID- 19 crisis. Questions remain. Given the pre-COVID-19 dominance of face-to-face instruction did student opinion of online learning change based on their experiences with the mandated transitions to virtual learning? Are the perceptions different for students at private versus public and small versus large institutions? This paper reports the results of an exploratory study of these bifurcations based on an online survey of student opinion conducted in Spring 2021. The findings provide some insight to student perceptions of the efficacy of the changed learning environment experienced by the subject populations
Stable crystalline lattices in two-dimensional binary mixtures of dipolar particles
The phase diagram of binary mixtures of particles interacting via a pair
potential of parallel dipoles is computed at zero temperature as a function of
composition and the ratio of their magnetic susceptibilities. Using lattice
sums, a rich variety of different stable crystalline structures is identified
including structures. [ particles correspond to large (small)
dipolar moments.] Their elementary cells consist of triangular, square,
rectangular or rhombic lattices of the particles with a basis comprising
various structures of and particles. For small (dipolar) asymmetry
there are intermediate and crystals besides the pure and
triangular crystals. These structures are detectable in experiments on granular

The effects of Non-Gaussian initial conditions on the structure and substructure of Cold Dark Matter halos
We study the structure and substructure of halos obtained in N-body
simulations for a Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) cosmology with non-Gaussian
initial conditions (NGICs). The initial statistics are lognormal in the
gravitational potential field with positive (LNp) and negative (LNn) skewness;
the sign of the skewness is conserved by the density field, and the power
spectrum is the same for all the simulations. Our aim is not to test a given
non-Gaussian statistics, but to explore the generic effect of positive- and
negative-skew statistics on halo properties. From our low-resolution
simulations, we find that LNp (LNn) halos are systematically more (less)
concentrated than their Gaussian counterparts. This result is confirmed by our
Milky Way- and cluster-sized halos resimulated with high-resolution. In
addition, they show inner density profiles that depend on the statistics: the
innermost slopes of LNp (LNn) halos are steeper (shallower) than those obtained
from the corresponding Gaussian halos. A subhalo population embedded in LNp
halos is more susceptible to destruction than its counterpart inside Gaussian
halos. On the other hand, subhalos in LNn halos tend to survive longer than
subhalos in Gaussian halos. The spin parameter probability distribution of LNp
(LNn) halos is skewed to smaller (larger) values with respect to the Gaussian
case. Our results show how the statistics of the primordial density field can
influence some halo properties, opening this the possibility to constrain,
although indirectly, the primordial statistics at small scale.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. Slight corrections after referee report. To

Search for Gamma-Ray Transients using the SMM Spectrometer
Observations for transient radiation made by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer on the SMM satellite are summarized. Spectra were obtained from 215 solar flares and 177 gamma-ray bursts. No narrow or moderately broadened lines were observed in any of the bursts. The rate of bursts is consistent with a constant over the mission but is weakly correlated with solar activity. No evidence was found for bursts of 511 keV line emission, unaccompanied by a strong continuum, at levels not less than 0.05 gamma/sq cm s for bursts lasting not more than 16 s. No evidence was found for broad features near 1 MeV from Cyg X-1, the Galactic center, or the Crab in 12-d integrations at levels not less than 0.006 gamma/sq cm s. No evidence was found for transient celestial narrow-line emission from 300 keV to 7 MeV on min-to-hrs-long time scales from 1984 to 1989
Starspots on the fastest rotators in the Beta Pic moving group
Aims: We carried out high-resolution spectroscopy and BV(I)_C photometric
monitoring of the two fastest late-type rotators in the nearby Beta Pictoris
moving group, HD199143 (F7V) and CD-641208 (K7V). The motivation for this work
is to investigate the rotation periods and photospheric spot patterns of these
very young stars, with a longer term view to probing the evolution of rotation
and magnetic activity during the early phases of main-sequence evolution. We
also aim to derive information on key physical parameters, such as rotational
velocity and rotation period. Methods: We applied maximum entropy (ME) and
Tikhonov regularizing (TR) criteria to derive the surface spot map
distributions of the optical modulation observed in HD199143 (F7 V) and
CD-641208 (K7V). We also used cross-correlation techniques to determine stellar
parameters such as radial velocities and rotational velocities. Lomb-Scargle
periodograms were used to obtain the rotational periods from differential
magnitude time series. Results: We find periods and inclinations of 0.356 days
and 21.5deg for HD199143, and 0.355 days and 50.1deg for CD-641208. The spot
maps of HD199143 obtained from the ME and TR methods are very similar, although
the latter gives a smoother distribution of the filling factor. Maps obtained
at two different epochs three weeks apart show a remarkable increase in spot
coverage amounting to ~7% of the surface of the photosphere over a time period
of only ~20 days. The spot maps of CD-641208 from the two methods show good
longitudinal agreement, whereas the latitude range of the spots is extended to
cover the whole visible hemisphere in the TR map. The distributions obtained
from the first light curve of HD199143 show the presence of an extended and
asymmetric active longitude with the maximum filling factor at longitude

Nonlocal properties of entangled two-photon generalized binomial states in two separate cavities
We consider entangled two-photon generalized binomial states of the
electromagnetic field in two separate cavities. The nonlocal properties of this
entangled field state are analyzed by studying the electric field correlations
between the two cavities. A Bell's inequality violation is obtained using an
appropriate dichotomic cavity operator, that is in principle measurable.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Accumulation of entanglement in a continuous variable memory
We study the accumulation of entanglement in a memory device built out of two
continuous variable (CV) systems. We address the case of a qubit mediating an
indirect joint interaction between the CV systems. We show that, in striking
contrast with respect to registers built out of bidimensional Hilbert spaces,
entanglement superior to a single ebit can be efficiently accumulated in the
memory, even though no entangled resource is used. We study the protocol in an
immediately implementable setup, assessing the effects of the main
