    SelEQ: a web-based application for the selection of earthquake ground motions for structural analysis

    Given the continuous development and availability of strong-motion databases containing real accelerograms, the consideration of such information in nonlinear structural analysis becomes increasingly attractive. However, the selection of records to adopt in structural analysis requires not only the consideration of consistent selection criteria but also the availability of computational tools that allow for fast and efficient searches of earthquake records within such databases. In this context, and following the recent advances in internet-based technologies, the present paper introduces SelEQ, a web-based application for the search and selection of earthquake records. This tool incorporates a number of filtering procedures allowing for the search of seismic records based on geophysical data but also on more advanced criteria such as spectral shape matching. Furthermore, SelEQ allows also the selection of earthquake records according to current seismic design code requirements, such as those of Eurocode 8, which demand for record suites compatible with a given response spectrum

    Five really easy steps to build a homemade low-cost simulator

    AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate how simple it is to build a homemade low-cost simulator using a simple 5-step scheme. METHODS: A scheme explaining how to build an endoscopic surgery simulator in 5 easy steps was presented to 26 surgeons. The simulator required a pair of scissors and easy-to-find materials. Its total cost was less than €35. The participants assessed the simulator using common endoscopic training toys or ex vivo tissue and completed an anonymous query comparing it with other commercial simulators that they had experienced before. RESULTS: In all, 84.6% found the simulator really easy to build. Every participant felt that he or she could do the same simulator themselves. Comparing with other commercial available box simulators, the majority of participants found the homemade simulator easier to (a) mount and dismount, (b) transport, (c) clean, and (d) use when practicing alone. CONCLUSIONS: Anyone can build its own simulator for a small amount of money

    Socio-economic, demographic, and behavioural determinants of women's empowerment in Mozambique

    Introduction Empowerment is considered pivotal for how women access and use health care services and experience their sexual and reproductive rights. In Mozambique, women’s empowerment requires a better understanding and contextualization, including looking at factors that could drive empowerment in that context. This study aims to identify socioeconomic, demographic, and behavioural determinants of different domains of women’s empowerment in Mozambique. Methods Using the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) conducted in 2015 for Mozambique, a sample of 2072 women aged between 15 and 49 years old were included in this study. The DHS’s indicators of women’s empowerment were used in a principal component analysis and the obtained components were identified as the domains of empowerment. Logistic regressions were run to estimate the association of socioeconomic, demographic, and behavioural characteristics with each domain of empowerment. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results Three domains of women’s empowerment were identified, namely (1) Beliefs about violence against women, (2) Decision-making, and (3) Control over sexuality and safe sex. Region, rurality, the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) and partner’s controlling behaviours were associated with Beliefs about violence against women, while Decision-making and Control over sexuality and safe sex were also associated with education, age and wealth. Employment, polygamous marriage and religion was positively associated with Decision-making, and access to media increased the odds of Control over sexuality and safe sex. Conclusion Women’s empowerment seems to be determined by different socio-economic, demographic, and behavioural factors and this seems to be closely related to different domains of empowerment identified.     A burst with double radio spectrum observed up to 212 GHz

    We study a solar flare that occurred on September 10, 2002, in active region NOAA 10105 starting around 14:52 UT and lasting approximately 5 minutes in the radio range. The event was classified as M2.9 in X-rays and 1N in H\alpha. Solar Submillimeter Telescope observations, in addition to microwave data give us a good spectral coverage between 1.415 and 212 GHz. We combine these data with ultraviolet images, hard and soft X-rays observations and full-disk magnetograms. Images obtained from Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imaging data are used to identify the locations of X-ray sources at different energies and to determine the X-ray spectrum, while ultra violet images allow us to characterize the coronal flaring region. The magnetic field evolution of the active region is analyzed using Michelson Doppler Imager magnetograms. The burst is detected at all available radio-frequencies. X-ray images (between 12 keV and 300 keV) reveal two compact sources and 212 GHz data, used to estimate the radio source position, show a single compact source displaced by 25" from one of the hard X-ray footpoints. We model the radio spectra using two homogeneous sources, and combine this analysis with that of hard X-rays to understand the dynamics of the particles. Relativistic particles, observed at radio wavelengths above 50 GHz, have an electron index evolving with the typical soft-hard-soft behaviour.Comment: Submitted to Solar Physics, 20 pages, 8 fugure

    The purpose of this study was to perform a preliminary validation of a new electronic instrument for human movement and performance assessment in sports. Measurements of distance, walking speed, step length and frequency were acquired, for a small sample of 15 subjects in a track of 10 m length, and compared to reference data. Results show good repeatability and data agreement across several trials at three different selfselected walking speeds

    Acute tubulointersticial nephritis with uveitis: A report of two cases

    Tubulointersticial nephritis and uveitis syndrome is an idiopathic and rare cause of acute kidney injury that should not overlooked, because it usually requires specific therapeutic interventions. We report two distinct cases: a young and an elder female. Both cases presented with unspecific constitutional symptoms but had different onset of renal and ocular involvement. Both were treated with topical and systemic corticoids and although there was a good initial response in both cases, an early relapse after steroids taper was observed in the younger patient and a persistent renal dysfunction in the older one. A high clinical suspicion and understanding of this disease is necessary for an adequate management and treatment of these patients. Recent data associates a worse renal prognosis when the disease appears in advanced age. In both of our cases the outcome was good but we had a short follow-up. The histological presentation of this disease in our older patient was similar to that reported in the literature, with a high percentage of fibrosis and chronicity of renal tissue that can contribute to the higher grade of renal dysfunction in this type of patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    A third sector in the core-periphery model: non-tradable goods

    We extend an analytically solvable core-periphery model by introducing a monopolistically competitive sector of non-tradable goods that is mobile across regions. We find that when the elasticity of substitution among non-tradable goods is very low, there is agglomeration of all the production (of both tradable and non-tradable goods). When the elasticity of substitution among non-tradable goods is sufficiently high ("no black-hole" condition), then there is symmetric dispersion of all the production, if trade costs are high; or full agglomeration of the production of tradable goods with partial agglomeration of the production of non-tradable goods, if trade costs are low

    Neospora caninum: high susceptibility to the parasite in C57BL/10ScCr mice

    Neospora caninum: high susceptibility to the parasite in C57BL/10ScCr miceC57BL/10ScCr mice, lack Toll-like receptor 4 and a functional Interleukin-12 receptor. Taking this into account, susceptibility of these mice to Neospora caninum infection was assessed comparatively to that of immunocompetent C57BL/10ScSn mice. C57BL/10ScCr mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 5 x 10(5) N. caninum tachyzoites showed a high Susceptibility to this parasite. All infected C57BL/10ScCr mice were dead by day 8 post-infection whereas all control C57BL/10ScSn mice survived this parasitic challenge. Immunohistochemical analysis of infected C57BL/10ScCr mice showed N. caninum tachyzoites spread in the pancreas, liver, lung, intestine, heart and brain whereas no parasites were detected in similarly infected C57BL/10ScSn controls. The higher susceptibility of C57BL/10ScCr mice to neosporosis correlates with reduced interferon-gamma mRNA expression and increased IL-4 mRNA expression, comparatively to C57BL/10ScSn controls, detected in the spleen after the parasitic challenge.     The Solar Submillimeter Telescope (SST) is an unique instrument that has been observing the Sun daily since 2001 bringing a wealth of information and raising new questions about the particle acceleration and transport, and emission mechanisms during flares.
