Collision and Diffusion in Microwave Breakdown of Nitrogen Gas in and around Microgaps
The microwave induced breakdown of N2 gas in microgaps was modeled using the
collision frequency between electrons and neutral molecules and the effective
electric field concept. Low pressure breakdown at the threshold electric field
occurs outside the gap, but at high pressures it is found to occur inside the
microgap with a large threshold breakdown electric field corresponding to a
very large electron oscillation amplitude. Three distinct pressure regimes are
apparent in the microgap breakdown: a low pressure multipactor branch, a
mid-pressure Paschen branch, both of which occur in the space outside the
microgap, and a high pressure diffusion-drift branch, which occurs inside the
microgap. The Paschen and diffusion-drift branches are divided by a sharp
transition and each separately fits the collision frequency model. There is
evidence that considerable electron loss to the microgap faces accompanies the
diffusion-drift branch in microgaps.Comment: 4 figure

The compact far infrared emission from the young stellar object IRAS 16293-2422
High resolution far IR observations at 50 and 100 microns were made of the young stellar object (YSO), IRAS 16293-2422. The observations are part of a systematic high resolution study of nearby YSO's. The purpose is to obtain resolution in the far IR comparable to that at other wavelengths. Until recently, the high resolution that has been available in the far IR has been from either IRAS (angular resolution of approx 4 min) or the KAO using standard FIR photometry (approx 35 sec). With scanning techniques, it is possible to obtain 10 sec resolution on bright sources. Such a resolution is necessary to better determine the physical conditions of the YSO, and to compare with model of star formation. In order to better constrain the models for the source, the YSO was observed at both 50 and 100 microns on several flights in 1988 April from the KAO. Estimates are presented of the size both along the major and minor axis of the disk, as well as estimates of the dust temperature and 100 micron opacity for the YSO
Planet Four: Terrains - Discovery of Araneiforms Outside of the South Polar Layered Deposits
We present the results of a systematic mapping of seasonally sculpted
terrains on the South Polar region of Mars with the Planet Four: Terrains (P4T)
online citizen science project. P4T enlists members of the general public to
visually identify features in the publicly released Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
CTX images. In particular, P4T volunteers are asked to identify: 1) araneiforms
(including features with a central pit and radiating channels known as
'spiders'); 2) erosional depressions, troughs, mesas, ridges, and
quasi-circular pits characteristic of the South Polar Residual Cap (SPRC) which
we collectively refer to as 'Swiss cheese terrain', and 3) craters. In this
work we present the distributions of our high confidence classic spider
araneiforms and Swiss cheese terrain identifications. We find no locations
within our high confidence spider sample that also have confident Swiss cheese
terrain identifications. Previously spiders were reported as being confined to
the South Polar Layered Deposits (SPLD). Our work has provided the first
identification of spiders at locations outside of the SPLD, confirmed with high
resolution HiRISE imaging. We find araneiforms on the Amazonian and Hesperian
polar units and the Early Noachian highland units, with 75% of the identified
araneiform locations in our high confidence sample residing on the SPLD. With
our current coverage, we cannot confirm whether these are the only geologic
units conducive to araneiform formation on the Martian South Polar region. Our
results are consistent with the current CO2 jet formation scenario with the
process exploiting weaknesses in the surface below the seasonal CO2 ice sheet
to carve araneiform channels into the regolith over many seasons. These new
regions serve as additional probes of the conditions required for channel

A new room-temperature equation of state of Bi up to 260 GPa
At room temperature, bismuth undergoes several structural transitions with
increasing pressure before taking on a body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at
approximately 8 GPa. The bcc structure is stable to the highest measured
pressure and its simplicity, along with its high compressibility and atomic
number, make it an enticing choice as a pressure calibrant. We present three
data sets on the compression of bismuth in a diamond anvil cell in a neon
pressure medium, up to a maximum pressure of about 260 GPa. The use of a soft
pressure medium reduces deviatoric stress when compared to previous work. With
an expanded pressure range, higher point density, and a decreased uniaxial
stress component, we are able to provide more reliable equation of state (EOS)
parameters. We also conduct density functional theory (DFT)
electronic-structure calculations that confirm the stability of the bcc phase

Red Snapper Distribution on Natural Habitats and Artificial Structures in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
In 2011, an intensive, multiple-gear, fishery-independent survey was carried out in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) to collect comprehensive age and length information on Red Snapper Lutjanus campechanus. Based on this synoptic survey, we produced a spatial map of Red Snapper relative abundance that integrates both gear selectivity effects and ontogenetically varying habitat usage. Our methodology generated a spatial map of Red Snapper at a 10-km2 grid resolution that is consistent with existing knowledge of the species: Red Snapper occurred in relatively high abundances at depths of 50–90 m along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana and in smaller, patchy “hot spots” at a variety of depths along the Alabama coast and the west Florida shelf. Red Snapper biomass and fecundity estimates were higher for the northwestern GOM than for the northeastern GOM, as the latter area contained mostly smaller, younger individuals. The existence of similar surveys on petroleum platforms and artificial reefs also enabled us to calculate their relative contribution to Red Snapper distribution compared with that of natural habitats.We estimated that for the youngest ageclasses, catch rates were approximately 20 times higher on artificial structures than on natural reefs. Despite the high catch rates observed on artificial structures, they represent only a small fraction of the total area in the northern GOM; thus, we estimated that they held less than 14%of Red Snapper abundance. Because artificial structures—particularly petroleum platforms—attract mostly the youngest individuals, their contribution was even lower in terms of total population biomass (7.8%) or spawning potential (6.4%). Our estimates of Red Snapper relative abundance, biomass, and spawning potential can be used to design spatial management strategies or as inputs to spatial modeling techniques
Distribution and Length Frequency of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois sp.) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
The purpose of this communication is to document continued spatial expansion of lionfish farther west into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, we provide the first length— mass relationships and length frequency information for lionfishes captured within the northern GOM based on data collected as part of a broader on—going study of lionfish life history in this region

Effects of melting conditions on platinum-inclusion content in phosphate laser glasses
Results from small-scale glass melting experiments aimed at reducing the density of platinum particles in phosphate laser glasses are discussed. The platinum particles originate from the crucibles used to melt the laser glass and can cause optical damage in glasses used in high-peak-power lasers. The melting experiments examine the effects of a) temperature and temperature gradients; b) processing time; and c) Oâ‚‚ atmosphere on the formation and dissolution of platinum inclusions in LG-750 phosphate laser glass. Results show that most platinum inclusions originate early in the melt cycle, with thermal gradients within the melter being one of the major causes. By using oxidizing conditions (Oâ‚‚), the platinum inclusions can be dissolved into the glass during the course of the melt cycle. Results from the laboratory-scale melting experiments have been incorporated into a proprietary laser-glass melting process. The laser glass prepared under these conditions has an average of less than 0.1 platinum inclusions/1, which represents a 1000-fold reduction over the previously available phosphate laser glasses
A survey of statistics in three UK general practice journal
Background
Many medical specialities have reviewed the statistical content of their journals. To our knowledge this has not been done in general practice. Given the main role of a general practitioner as a diagnostician we thought it would be of interest to see whether the statistical methods reported reflect the diagnostic process.
Methods
Hand search of three UK journals of general practice namely the British Medical Journal (general practice section), British Journal of General Practice and Family Practice over a one-year period (1 January to 31 December 2000).
Results
A wide variety of statistical techniques were used. The most common methods included t-tests and Chi-squared tests. There were few articles reporting likelihood ratios and other useful diagnostic methods. There was evidence that the journals with the more thorough statistical review process reported a more complex and wider variety of statistical techniques.
Conclusions
The BMJ had a wider range and greater diversity of statistical methods than the other two journals. However, in all three journals there was a dearth of papers reflecting the diagnostic process. Across all three journals there were relatively few papers describing randomised controlled trials thus recognising the difficulty of implementing this design in general practice
