Multi-Satellite Attitude Prediction program/Orbiting Solar Observatory-8 (MSAP/OSO-8) operating guide
The sun's lower corona and chromosphere and their interaction in the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) spectral regions were investigated to better understand the transport of energy from the photosphere to the corona. The interaction between the solar electromagnetic and particle radiation and the earth's environment was studied and the background component of cosmic X-rays was discussed
Modelling gravity on a hyper-cubic lattice
We present an elegant and simple dynamical model of symmetric, non-degenerate
(n x n) matrices of fixed signature defined on a n-dimensional hyper-cubic
lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. We show how this model is related
to General Relativity, and discuss multiple ways in which it can be useful for
studying gravity, both classical and quantum. In particular, we show that the
dynamics of the model when all matrices are close to the identity corresponds
exactly to a finite-difference discretization of weak-field gravity in harmonic
gauge. We also show that the action which defines the full dynamics of the
model corresponds to the Einstein-Hilbert action to leading order in the
lattice spacing, and use this observation to define a lattice analogue of the
Ricci scalar and Einstein tensor. Finally, we perform a mean-field analysis of
the statistical mechanics of this model.Comment: 5 page

Arithmetic Spacetime Geometry from String Theory
An arithmetic framework to string compactification is described. The approach
is exemplified by formulating a strategy that allows to construct geometric
compactifications from exactly solvable theories at . It is shown that the
conformal field theoretic characters can be derived from the geometry of
spacetime, and that the geometry is uniquely determined by the two-dimensional
field theory on the world sheet. The modular forms that appear in these
constructions admit complex multiplication, and allow an interpretation as
generalized McKay-Thompson series associated to the Mathieu and Conway groups.
This leads to a string motivated notion of arithmetic moonshine.Comment: 36 page
Complete quantization of a diffeomorphism invariant field theory
In order to test the canonical quantization programme for general relativity
we introduce a reduced model for a real sector of complexified Ashtekar gravity
which captures important properties of the full theory. While it does not
correspond to a subset of Einstein's gravity it has the advantage that the
programme of canonical quantization can be carried out completely and
explicitly, both, via the reduced phase space approach or along the lines of
the algebraic quantization programme. This model stands in close correspondence
to the frequently treated cylindrically symmetric waves. In contrast to other
models that have been looked at up to now in terms of the new variables the
reduced phase space is infinite dimensional while the scalar constraint is
genuinely bilinear in the momenta. The infinite number of Dirac observables can
be expressed in compact and explicit form in terms of the original phase space
variables. They turn out, as expected, to be non-local and form naturally a set
of countable cardinality.Comment: 32p, LATE
Generalized Classical BRST Cohomology and Reduction of Poisson Manifolds
In this paper, we formulate a generalization of the classical BRST
construction which applies to the case of the reduction of a poisson manifold
by a submanifold. In the case of symplectic reduction, our procedure
generalizes the usual classical BRST construction which only applies to
symplectic reduction of a symplectic manifold by a coisotropic submanifold,
\ie\ the case of reducible ``first class'' constraints. In particular, our
procedure yields a method to deal with ``second-class'' constraints. We
construct the BRST complex and compute its cohomology. BRST cohomology vanishes
for negative dimension and is isomorphic as a poisson algebra to the algebra of
smooth functions on the reduced poisson manifold in zero dimension. We then
show that in the general case of reduction of poisson manifolds, BRST
cohomology cannot be identified with the cohomology of vertical differential
forms.Comment: 3
Pressure Induced Hydration Dynamics of Membranes
Pressure-jump initiated time-resolved x-ray diffraction studies of dynamics
of the hydration of the hexagonal phase in biological membranes show that (i)
the relaxation of the unit cell spacing is non-exponential in time; (ii) the
Bragg peaks shift smoothly to their final positions without significant
broadening or loss in crystalline order. This suggests that the hydration is
not diffusion limited but occurs via a rather homogeneous swelling of the whole
lattice, described by power law kinetics with an exponent .Comment: REVTEX 3, 10 pages,3 figures(available on request),#
Transient absorption and reshaping of ultrafast XUV light by laser-dressed helium
We present a theoretical study of transient absorption and reshaping of
extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by helium atoms dressed with a moderately
strong infrared (IR) laser field. We formulate the atomic response using both
the frequency-dependent absorption cross section and a time-frequency approach
based on the time-dependent dipole induced by the light fields. The latter
approach can be used in cases when an ultrafast dressing pulse induces
transient effects, and/or when the atom exchanges energy with multiple
frequency components of the XUV field. We first characterize the dressed atom
response by calculating the frequency-dependent absorption cross section for
XUV energies between 20 and 24 eV for several dressing wavelengths between 400
and 2000 nm and intensities up to 10^12 W/cm^2. We find that for dressing
wavelengths near 1600 nm, there is an Autler-Townes splitting of the 1s ---> 2p
transition that can potentially lead to transparency for absorption of XUV
light tuned to this transition. We study the effect of this XUV transparency in
a macroscopic helium gas by incorporating the time-frequency approach into a
solution of the coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations. We find rich temporal
reshaping dynamics when a 61 fs XUV pulse resonant with the 1s ---> 2p
transition propagates through a helium gas dressed by an 11 fs, 1600 nm laser
pulse.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, RevTeX4, revise
Wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici N-myristoyltransferase inhibitors: on-target antifungal activity and an unusual metabolic defense mechanism
Zymoseptoria tritici is the causative agent of Septoria tritici blotch (STB), which costs billions of dollars annually to major wheat-producing countries in terms of both fungicide use and crop loss. Agricultural pathogenic fungi have acquired resistance to most commercially available fungicide classes, and the rate of discovery and development of new fungicides has stalled, demanding new approaches and insights. Here we investigate a potential mechanism of targeting an important wheat pathogen Z. tritici via inhibition of N-myristoyltransferase (NMT). We characterize Z. tritici NMT biochemically for the first time, profile the in vivo Z. tritici myristoylated proteome and identify and validate the first Z. tritici NMT inhibitors. Proteomic investigation of the downstream effects of NMT inhibition identified an unusual and novel mechanism of defense against chemical toxicity in Z. tritici through the application of comparative bioinformatics to deconvolute function from the previously largely unannotated Z. tritici proteome. Research into novel fungicidal modes-of-action is essential to satisfy an urgent unmet need for novel fungicide targets, and we anticipate that this study will serve as a useful proteomics and bioinformatics resource for researchers studying Z. tritici
Celebrity, Death, and Taxes: Michael Jackson\u27s Estate
The untimely death of Michael Jackson this past June presents an opportunity to reassess certain thorny estate tax issues that may arise when a celebrity dies owning valuable intellectual property. Elsewhere we have debated hypothetical, tax-motivated changes to state laws relating to postmortem publicity rights. This article focuses on existing legislation, like California’s, that makes publicity rights both devisable and descendible. Federal transfer taxes are levied on intangible property as well as tangible assets, and therefore apply to intellectual property, including a celebrity’s right of publicity and copyrights retained by an artist in his or her creations. Using Michael Jackson’s estate as an example, and focusing primarily on publicity rights, we examine two questions that any estate planner representing a celebrity client ought to consider. First, how should a personal representative value intellectual property for estate tax purposes? Second, what strategies are available to lessen the estate tax burden associated with certain intellectual property rights
